Investment, institutions, and governance in Asia

    Get PDF
We investigate the extent to which the investment slowdown in many Asian countries since the Asian Financial Crisis is attributable to changes in governance institutions. In the process we test the more general hypothesis that different aspects of governance will become relevant constraints to investment and growth at differing levels of countries’ development. This hypothesis is validated and explains a standing paradox that finds certain governance aspects – notably voice and accountability and control of corruption – do not apparently figure as explanations in the average growth record. We show that in fact they do, though only at certain levels of development.

An Evaluation of the Home Consumption Value System

The Philippines has been one among the few that still adheres to the home consumption valuation (HCV), a system that, according to many importers, results to overvaluation. This article assesses the validity of the claim through analysis of HCV’s impact on the level of protection structure. It also estimates the revenue effects of a change in valuation basis.Bureau of Customs, trade sector, import commodities, consumption pattern, valuation system

Carrier Densities And Electron-hole Recombination Lifetimes In Gaas-(ga,al)as Quantum-well Photoluminescence

    Get PDF
A quantum-mechanical calculation of the carrier densities and electron-hole recombination lifetimes in GaAs-(Ga,Al)As quantum wells is performed, under steady-state optical excitation conditions and in the high-temperature regime. The variables are the continuous-wave (cw) laser intensity, well widths, and acceptor distribution in the well. Radiative recombination of electrons with free holes and holes bound at neutral acceptors are considered. Our calculations for the dependence of the electron density on laser intensity are in quantitative agreement with recent experimental results for multiple asymmetric coupled quantum wells at T=300 K and for intermediate excitation. Also, results for the carrier-density-dependent e-h recombination decay time at T=155 K are in good agreement with recent experimental data in semiconductor quantum wells.75166066

Intraband Optical Absorption In Superlattices In An In-plane Magnetic Field

    Get PDF
The absorption coefficient of GaAs-AlxGa1-xAs superlattices in an in-plane magnetic field is studied in the case of intraband transitions between electronic magnetic levels. A detailed analysis of the absorption peaks and their dependence on the magnetic-field intensity, superlattice period, and temperature, is performed. By taking into account the detailed properties of the magnetic subbands, the joint density of states, the transition matrix elements, and the effective sheet concentration of electrons involved in the optical transitions, a simple theoretical explanation is given for some experimental results previously reported. © 1993 The American Physical Society.4874516452

Features of alterations of igneous rocks from Sierras of Guadarrama and Malagon (Spanish Central Range)

The main features of the alterations developped on igneous rocks of Central System are described. From geomorphological criteria as well as mineralogical data, different stages of weathering are been inferred. Although weathering processes have not been strong, different conditions are discussed for each stage

Universal Design in the Education System: Training of Professionals as a key to the Success of a Tourism Without Exclusion

Abstract. Abstract, The World Tourism Organization promotes Accessible Tourism with aiming at developing the tourist industry through accessibility, sustainability and technology from a social innovation perspective, thus making it crucial for education institutions to take interest in all relevant changes brought about by the changing needs of society. Tourism is a key driving force regarding socioeconomic progress, as well as an activity that has comprehensive impact in all service areas. Therefore, taking into consideration that universal accessibility and design for all individuals makes life more confortable, it is essential to provide certain guarantees so individuals can live with full rights and take part in economic, social and cultural matters equally. Training professionals is one of these guarantees and it is at the same time a challenge, a need and an opportunity for tourism to contribute to the fulfilment of those individuals who take part in it. Population diversity must be recognised by improving the access of disabled individuals to products and services, as well as by setting common accessibility standards in accordance to the European Accessibility Act. In conclusion, the aim is to achieve Inclusive Tourism that will enable the creation of a convergence of interests for the sake of our society. This implies developing accessibility training plans for professionals in the tourist sector so they become the key success of a fully inclusive tourism. Hence achieving a tourist industry that complies with the Official University Education System, in which study programmes will take into account the fact that every professional activity must embed transversal competences in Universal Accessibility and Design for All

Effects Of Crossed Electric And Magnetic Fields On The Electronic And Excitonic States In Bulk Gaas And Gaas Ga1-x Alx As Quantum Wells

The variational procedure in the effective-mass and parabolic-band approximations is used in order to investigate the effects of crossed electric and in-plane magnetic fields on the electronic and exciton properties in semiconductor heterostructures. Calculations are performed for bulk GaAs and GaAs Ga1-x Alx As quantum wells, for applied magnetic fields parallel to the layers and electric fields in the growth direction, and it is shown that the combined effects on the heterostructure properties of the applied crossed electric and magnetic fields and the direct coupling between the center-of-mass and internal exciton motions may be dealt with via a simple parameter representing the spatial distance between the centers of the electron and hole magnetic parabolas. Exciton properties are analyzed by using a simple hydrogenlike envelope excitonic wave function and present theoretical results are found in fair agreement with available experimental measurements on the diamagnetic shift of the photoluminescence peak position of GaAs Ga1-x Alx As quantum wells under in-plane magnetic fields. © 2007 The American Physical Society.753Whittaker, D.M., Fisher, T.A., Simmonds, P.E., Skolnick, M.S., Smith, R.S., (1991) Phys.
