Structure, bonding and magnetism in cobalt clusters
The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Co clusters
(20) have been investigated using density functional theory within the
pseudopotential plane wave method. An unusual hexagonal growth pattern has been
observed in the intermediate size range, 20. The cobalt atoms are
ferromagnetically ordered and the calculated magnetic moments are found to be
higher than that of corresponding hcp bulk value, which are in good agreement
with the recent Stern-Gerlach experiments. The average coordination number is
found to dominate over the average bond length to determine the effective
hybridization and consequently the cluster magnetic moment.Comment: 12 pages and 9 figure
Effect of nonlinearity on the dynamics of a particle in dc field-induced systems
Dynamics of a particle in a perfect chain with one nonlinear impurity and in
a perfect nonlinear chain under the action of dc field is studied numerically.
The nonlinearity appears due to the coupling of the electronic motion to
optical oscillators which are treated in adiabatic approximation.
We study for both the low and high values of field strength. Three different
range of nonlinearity is obtained where the dynamics is different. In low and
intermediate range of nonlinearity, it reduces the localization. In fact in the
intermediate range subdiffusive behavior in the perfect nonlinear chain is
obtained for a long time. In all the cases a critical value of nonlinear
strength exists where self-trapping transition takes place. This critical value
depends on the system and the field strength. Beyond the self-trapping
transition nonlinearity enhances the localization.Comment: 9 pages, Revtex, 6 ps figures include
Does the QCD plasma contain propagating gluons?
Comparison of two appropriately chosen screening masses of colour singlet
operators in the pure glue QCD plasma indicates that at sufficiently high
temperature it contains a weakly-interacting massive quasi-particle with the
quantum numbers of the electric gluon. Still in the deconfined phase, but
closer to T_c, the same mass ratio is similar to that at zero temperature,
indicating that the propagating modes are more glueball-like, albeit with a
lower scale for the masses. We observe a continuity between these two regimes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
The continuum limit of quark number susceptibilities
We report the continuum limit of quark number susceptibilities in quenched
QCD. Deviations from ideal gas behaviour at temperature T increase as the
lattice spacing is decreased from T/4 to T/6, but a further decrease seems to
have very little effect. The measured susceptibilities are 20% lower than the
ideal gas values, and also 10% below the hard thermal loop (HTL) results. The
off-diagonal susceptibility is several orders of magnitude smaller than the HTL
results. We verify a strong correlation between the lowest screening mass and
the susceptibility. We also show that the quark number susceptibilities give a
reasonable account of the Wroblewski parameter, which measures the strangeness
yield in a heavy-ion collision.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Stationary Localized States Due to a Nonlinear Dimeric Impurity Embedded in a Perfect 1-D Chain
The formation of Stationary Localized states due to a nonlinear dimeric
impurity embedded in a perfect 1-d chain is studied here using the appropriate
Discrete Nonlinear Schrdinger Equation. Furthermore, the nonlinearity
has the form, where is the complex amplitude. A proper
ansatz for the Localized state is introduced in the appropriate Hamiltonian of
the system to obtain the reduced effective Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian
contains a parameter, which is the ratio of stationary
amplitudes at impurity sites. Relevant equations for Localized states are
obtained from the fixed point of the reduced dynamical system. = 1 is
always a permissible solution. We also find solutions for which . Complete phase diagram in the plane comprising of both
cases is discussed. Several critical lines separating various regions are
found. Maximum number of Localized states is found to be six. Furthermore, the
phase diagram continuously extrapolates from one region to the other. The
importance of our results in relation to solitonic solutions in a fully
nonlinear system is discussed.Comment: Seven figures are available on reques
Spin splitting and precession in quantum dots with spin-orbit coupling: the role of spatial deformation
Extending a previous work on spin precession in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots with
spin-orbit coupling, we study the role of deformation in the external
confinement. Small elliptical deformations are enough to alter the precessional
characteristics at low magnetic fields. We obtain approximate expressions for
the modified factor including weak Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit terms.
For more intense couplings numerical calculations are performed. We also study
the influence of the magnetic field orientation on the spin splitting and the
related anisotropy of the factor. Using realistic spin-orbit strengths our
model calculations can reproduce the experimental spin-splittings reported by
Hanson et al. (cond-mat/0303139) for a one-electron dot. For dots containing
more electrons, Coulomb interaction effects are estimated within the
local-spin-density approximation, showing that many features of the
non-iteracting system are qualitatively preserved.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Tissue biomarkers in prognostication of serous ovarian cancer following neoadjuvant chemotherapy
Serous ovarian cancer (SOC) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in females with poor prognosis because of advanced stage at presentation. Recently, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is being used for management of advanced SOC, but role of tissue biomarkers in prognostication following NACT is not well established. The study was conducted on advanced stage SOC patients (n = 100) that were treated either conventionally (n = 50) or with NACT (n = 50), followed by surgery. In order to evaluate the expression of tissue biomarkers (p53, MIB1, estrogen and progesterone receptors, Her-2/neu, E-cadherin, and Bcl2), immunohistochemistry and semiquantitative scoring were done following morphological examination. Following NACT, significant differences in tumor histomorphology were observed as compared to the native neoplasms. MIB 1 was significantly lower in cases treated with NACT and survival outcome was significantly better in cases with low MIB 1. ER expression was associated with poor overall survival. No other marker displayed any significant difference in expression or correlation with survival between the two groups. Immunophenotype of SOC does not differ significantly in samples from cases treated with NACT, compared to upfront surgically treated cases. The proliferating capacity of the residual tumor cells is less, depicted by low mean MIB1 LI. MIB 1 and ER inversely correlate with survival
Continuum and lattice meson spectral functions at nonzero momentum and high temperature
We analyse discretization effects in the calculation of high-temperature
meson spectral functions at nonzero momentum and fermion mass on the lattice.
We do so by comparing continuum and lattice spectral functions in the infinite
temperature limit. Complete analytical results for the spectral densities in
the continuum are presented, along with simple expressions for spectral
functions obtained with Wilson and staggered fermions on anisotropic lattices.
We comment on the use of local and point split currents.Comment: 20 pages, 7 eps figure
