    STUDI SUHU TRANSISI GELAS PRODUK PENCANGKOKAN ANHIDRIDA MALEAT PADA KARET ALAM SIKLIS: METODE DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY

    Pada penelitian ini dilaporkan perubahan suhu transisi gelas produk pencangkokan anhidrida maleat pada karet alam siklis. Pencangkokan anhidrida maleat pada karet alam siklis dilakukan dalam fase leleh dengan penambahan komonomer divinil benzen di dalam pencampur internal suhu 185oC dan kecepatan rotor 85 rpm. Konsentrasi anhidrida maleat yang digunakan dalam proses pencangkokan adalah 16 phr, tanpa penambahan dan dengan penambahan komonomer divinil benzen dengan variasi: 0,5, 1 dan 2 mol rasio. Produk pencangkokan dikarakterisasi dengan Differential Scanning Calorimetry untuk mempelajari perubahan suhu transisi gelasnya. Berdasarkan analisis dan pengolahan data menggunakan software thermal analysis diperoleh bahwa semakin banyak penambahan komonomer divinil benzene maka suhu transisi gelasnya semakin tinggi, yaitu: 69,46oC, 69,51oC, 70,08oC dan 70,56oC

    Long-Term Follow Up of Secundum Atrial Septal Defect Closure with the Amplatzer Septal Occluder

    During the past 15 years, closure of a secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) has moved from a surgical to a percutaneous transcatheter approach. Few long-term studies of the efficacy and safety of closure of an ASD by an Amplatzer septal occluder (ASO) exist.To examine the long-term results of secundum ASD closure using the ASO, data on 94 patients who underwent secundum ASD closure with the ASO between 1998 and 2002 were available and reviewed. Data regarding residual shunt, chest pain, palpitations, arrhythmias, headaches, transient ischemic attacks, cerebrovascular accidents, and mortality were collected.Seven (7.4%) subjects had residual shunts immediately following ASO placement. During follow-up, 4 residual shunts closed for a complete closure rate of 97%. Eighteen (19%) patients reported chest pain during the follow-up period. Twenty-three patients (24%) reported palpitations during the follow up period, 7 were documented arrhythmias, including supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, and premature ventricular beats. Migraine headaches were new-onset in 4 patients. Migraine cessation occurred in 2 patients after secundum ASD closure. One child died from a cerebral vascular event 18 months following device placement. Only 1 patient developed mild aortic insufficiency.These data indicate that for up to 120 months of patient follow-up, the ASO continues to be a safe device. Residual shunts and arrhythmias have low incidence post-ASO placement.     Characterisation of Oil Palm Acyl-CoA-Binding Proteins and Correlation of their Gene Expression with Oil Synthesis

    Acyl-CoA-binding proteins (ACBPs) are involved in binding and trafficking acyl-CoA esters in eukaryotic cells. ACBPs contain a well-conserved acyl-CoA-binding domain (ACBD). Their various functions have been characterized in the model plant Arabidopsis and, to a lesser extent, in rice. In this study, genome-wide detection and expression analysis of ACBPs were performed on Elaeis guineensis (oil palm), the most important oil crop in the world. Seven E. guineensis ACBPs were identified and classified into four groups according to their deduced amino acid domain organization. Phylogenetic analysis showed conservation of this family with other higher plants. All seven EgACBPs were expressed in most tissues while their differential expression suggests various functions in specific tissues. For example, EgACBP3 had high expression in inflorescences and stalks while ACBP1 showed strong expression in leaves. Because of the importance of E. guineensis as an oil crop, expression of EgACBPs was specifically examined during fruit development. EgACBP3 showed high expression throughout mesocarp development, while EgACBP1 had enhanced expression during rapid oil synthesis. In endosperm, both EgACBP1 and EgACBP3 exhibited increased expression during seed development. These results provide important information for further investigations on the biological functions of EgACBPs in various tissues and, in particular, their roles in oil synthesis

    Factors regulating excystment of a toxic dinoflagellate in the genus Alexandrium were investigated in cysts from Puget Sound, Washington State, USA. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory using cysts collected from benthic seedbeds to determine if excystment is controlled by internal or environmental factors. The results suggest that the timing of germination is not tightly controlled by an endogenous clock, though there is a suggestion of a cyclical pattern. This was explored using cysts that had been stored under cold (4 °C), anoxic conditions in the dark and then incubated for 6 weeks at constant favorable environmental conditions. Excystment occurred during all months of the year, with variable excystment success ranging from 31-90%. When cysts were isolated directly from freshly collected sediments every month and incubated at the in situ bottom water temperature, a seasonal pattern in excystment was observed that was independent of temperature. This pattern may be consistent with secondary dormancy, an externally modulated pattern that prevents excystment during periods that are not favorable for sustained vegetative growth. However, observation over more annual cycles is required and the duration of the mandatory dormancy period of these cysts must be determined before the seasonality of germination can be fully characterized in Alexandrium from Puget Sound.
