    Evaluation of the Input Impedance and Impedance Quality Factor of a Dipole in Spatial and Spectral Domains

    In classic antenna analysis, there exist several methods of calculating input impedance when the source distribution of an antenna is known. The well-known induced EMF method, based on spatially distributed currents, is typically applied for this purpose and, thereby, serves as a reference for this research. Conversely, the spectral domain method takes the opposite approach for the input impedance and is evaluated using a far-field pattern. This paper compares the induced EMF method and the spectral domain method. Furthermore, the quality factor of the dipole antenna, based on the impedance variation with frequency, is calculated for both methods. This study shows that the induced EMF method and the spectral domain method are in close agreement

    Cause of the fragile-to-strong transition observed in water confined in C-S-H gel

    In this study, the rotational dynamics of hydration water confined in calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gel with a water content of 22 wt.% was studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy in broad temperature (110-300 K) and frequency (10(-1)-10(8) Hz) ranges. The C-S-H gel was used as a 3D confining system for investigating the possible existence of a fragile-to-strong transition for water around 220 K. Such transition was observed at 220 K in a previous study [Y. Zhang, M. Lagi, F. Ridi, E. Fratini, P. Baglioni, E. Mamontov and S. H. Chen, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 20, 502101 (2008)] on a similar system, and it was there associated with a hidden critical point of bulk water. However, based on the experimental results presented here, there is no sign of a fragile-to-strong transition for water confined in C-S-H gel. Instead, the fragile-to-strong transition can be explained by a merging of two different relaxation processes at about 220 K. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC

    A dual function for Pex3p in peroxisome formation and inheritance

    Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pex3p has been shown to act at the ER during de novo peroxisome formation. However, its steady state is at the peroxisomal membrane, where its role is debated. Here we show that Pex3p has a dual function: one in peroxisome formation and one in peroxisome segregation. We show that the peroxisome retention factor Inp1p interacts physically with Pex3p in vitro and in vivo, and split-GFP analysis shows that the site of interaction is the peroxisomal membrane. Furthermore, we have generated PEX3 alleles that support peroxisome formation but fail to support recruitment of Inp1p to peroxisomes, and as a consequence are affected in peroxisome segregation. We conclude that Pex3p functions as an anchor for Inp1p at the peroxisomal membrane, and that this function is independent of its role at the ER in peroxisome biogenesis

    Categorizing natural disaster damage assessment using satellite-based geospatial techniques

    Remote sensing of a natural disaster's damage offers an exciting backup and/or alternative to traditional means of on-site damage assessment. Although necessary for complete assessment of damage areas, ground-based damage surveys conducted in the aftermath of natural hazard passage can sometimes be potentially complicated due to on-site difficulties (e.g., interaction with various authorities and emergency services) and hazards (e.g., downed power lines, gas lines, etc.), the need for rapid mobilization (particularly for remote locations), and the increasing cost of rapid physical transportation of manpower and equipment. Satellite image analysis, because of its global ubiquity, its ability for repeated independent analysis, and, as we demonstrate here, its ability to verify on-site damage assessment provides an interesting new perspective and investigative aide to researchers. Using one of the strongest tornado events in US history, the 3 May 1999 Oklahoma City Tornado, as a case example, we digitized the tornado damage path and co-registered the damage path using pre- and post-Landsat Thematic Mapper image data to perform a damage assessment. We employed several geospatial approaches, specifically the Getis index, Geary's <i>C</i>, and two lacunarity approaches to categorize damage characteristics according to the original Fujita tornado damage scale (F-scale). Our results indicate strong relationships between spatial indices computed within a local window and tornado F-scale damage categories identified through the ground survey. Consequently, linear regression models, even incorporating just a single band, appear effective in identifying F-scale damage categories using satellite imagery. This study demonstrates that satellite-based geospatial techniques can effectively add spatial perspectives to natural disaster damages, and in particular for this case study, tornado damages

    Rifampicin Induces Gene, Protein, and Activity of P-Glycoprotein (ABCB1) in Human Precision-Cut Intestinal Slices

    P-glycoprotein (ABCB1), an ATP-binding cassette efflux transporter, limits intestinal absorption of its substrates and is a common site of drug–drug interactions. Drug-mediated induction of intestinal ABCB1 is a clinically relevant phenomenon associated with significantly decreased drug bioavailability. Currently, there are no well-established human models for evaluating its induction, so drug regulatory authorities provide no recommendations for in vitro/ex vivo testing drugs’ ABCB1-inducing activity. Human precision-cut intestinal slices (hPCISs) contain cells in their natural environment and express physiological levels of nuclear factors required for ABCB1 induction. We found that hPCISs incubated in William’s Medium E for 48 h maintained intact morphology, ATP content, and ABCB1 efflux activity. Here, we asked whether rifampicin (a model ligand of pregnane X receptor, PXR), at 30 μM, induces functional expression of ABCB1 in hPCISs over 24- and 48-h incubation (the time to allow complete induction to occur). Rifampicin significantly increased gene expression, protein levels, and efflux activity of ABCB1. Moreover, we described dynamic changes in ABCB1 transcript levels in hPCISs over 48 h incubation. We also observed that peaks of induction are achieved among donors at different times, and the extent of ABCB1 gene induction is proportional to PXR mRNA levels in the intestine. In conclusion, we showed that hPCISs incubated in conditions comparable to those used for inhibition studies can be used to evaluate drugs’ ABCB1-inducing potency in the human intestine. Thus, hPCISs may be valuable experimental tools that can be prospectively used in complex experimental evaluation of drug–drug interactions
