    Effects of the whole vine versus single shoot-crop level on fruit growth in Vitis labruscana 'Concord'

    The fruit growth response to the whole vine and single shoot crop level was studied in Vitis labruscana 'Concord' grown in the North-Eastern United States. In vines thinned to lower and higher yields (equivalent to 12 and 21 t·ha-1), different number of clusters per shoot were retained after cluster thinning one week after set. Results showed that the seasonal accumulation of berry dry weight, fruit fresh weight, and the berry total soluble solids at harvest were only affected by the whole vine crop level. This suggests that under the conditions of this experiment shoots are not autonomous in terms of carbon partitioning to the fruit. Hence, crop level effects on fruit development can be considered and modelled on a whole vine basis.

    Molecular characterization of officially registered Sangiovese clones and of other Sangiovese-like biotypes in Tuscany, Corsica and Emilia-Romagna

    The present study was designed (1) to identify and determine the origin of the genetic variability via SSR and AFLP within a group of 39 Sangiovese clones officially listed in the National Grapevine Registry, (2) to pinpoint varietal differences and potential family relations among 34 Sangiovese-like biotypes, via the SSR markers. Most biotypes are regarded as Sangiovese but sometimes are known under different names. In both studies the reference standard was the registered Sangiovese clone SG 12T.No polymorphism was found among the officially listed 39 clones analysed at 6 microsatellite loci. This enabled us to confirm their origin from a single mother plant, thereby supporting the view that any morphological or qualitative differences may be the result of propagation-related mutagenic events. A subsequent AFLP analysis of 26 of the 39 clones showed polymorphic bands in three of them (two identical) that may correspond to a mutagenic event. Assays with SSR markers on 34 Sangiovese-like biotypes collected in Tuscany, Corsica and Emilia-Romagna showed that 28 are identical with the reference Sangiovese clone SG 12T, while the remaining 6 (Sangiovese 1, Sangiovese 6, Morellino, Poverina, Sangiovese forte and Brunellone) are genetically different from SG 12T and among one another so that no direct family relations could be established

    Assessing Growers\u27 Challenges and Needs to Improve Wine Grape Production in Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania wine grape growers were surveyed to obtain information on factors affecting varietal selection, challenges to production, and their perceptions of canopy management practices. Our survey revealed that participants perceived site as a key factor in varietal selection decisions and winter injury as the greatest challenge for their economic sustainability. Other issues limiting production and profitability were disease control, frost injury, and labor cost and availability. Participants recognized the importance of canopy management practices for reaching optimum wine quality but had concerns over the shortage and cost of labor to implement them. Mechanization of canopy management likely would increase adoption
