Experiment in teaching the techniques of detecting propaganda

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper was to find an aid in teaching one phase of a unit involving critical reading skills. An experiment in teaching pupils the techniques of detecting propaganda was conducted in a single grade at Saint Francis Seraph School located in a low-socio economic area in Cincinnati, Ohio. Seven basic techniques were chosen as a guide for the study. These techniques were chosen as a guide for the study. These techniques were adapted from the book, Reading Instruction for Today\u27s Children

    Fixing Foreclosure

    Get PDF
Since the American Revolution, mortgage foreclosures have consisted of a public auction of the mortgaged property. Judges and state legislators at the time believed that an auction was the best way to obtain a fair price for the land. Though that belief soon proved to be mistaken, the sale method remains unchanged

Bringing Manufactured Housing into the Real Estate Finance System

    Get PDF
Eight percent of the United States population - more than 23 million people - live in manufactured homes (also called mobile homes). In some years, more than 30% of the new homes sold have been manufactured. Moreover, manufactured housing is the most important form of unsubsidized affordable housing in this country. Up to two-thirds of the new affordable homes built each year have been manufactured. However, the manufactured housing industry currently is struggling to survive a meltdown in its sales and finance markets. A tremendous obstacle to the industry’s recovery is that most manufactured homes are characterized as personal property, though they have evolved tremendously from their earliest ancestor, the travel trailer. Today, only 1% of manufactured homes are moved after being sited on a lot. Recharacterizing manufactured homes as real property would reflect modern reality and would provide purchasers and owners with access to the mortgage market, which would increase credit availability and affordability and would provide manufactured home owners the same legal protections that owners of site-built homes enjoy

Mine surveying in the Missouri coal fields

    Get PDF
The mines surveyed and included in this thesis are certain mines in the foremost and second largest producing counties in the state, namely Macon and Adair county. This thesis also includes surveying at one mine in Randolph County ... The mines included in this thesis operate mainly in the Bevier bed. This seam contains an average of 41 inches of coal in Adair County and is somewhat thicker in Macon and Randolph County. All mines in the Bevier bed are operated on the room and pillar system of mining with about 50 to 60 percent extraction in Adair County and a somewhat greater extraction in Macon County. A few mines included in this thesis operate in the Mulky bed. This seam is from 20 to 24 inches thick and is operated on the longwall system with a face track and skip roadways off of the main entry --Introduction, Pages 5-6

Interstellar Sonic and Alfv\'enic Mach Numbers and the Tsallis Distribution

In an effort to characterize the Mach numbers of ISM magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, we study the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of patial increments of density, velocity, and magnetic field for fourteen ideal isothermal MHD simulations at resolution 512^3. In particular, we fit the PDFs using the Tsallis function and study the dependency of fit parameters on the compressibility and magnetization of the gas. We find that the Tsallis function fits PDFs of MHD turbulence well, with fit parameters showing sensitivities to the sonic and Alfven Mach numbers. For 3D density, column density, and position-position-velocity (PPV) data we find that the amplitude and width of the PDFs shows a dependency on the sonic Mach number. We also find the width of the PDF is sensitive to global Alfvenic Mach number especially in cases where the sonic number is high. These dependencies are also found for mock observational cases, where cloud-like boundary conditions, smoothing, and noise are introduced. The ability of Tsallis statistics to characterize sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers of simulated ISM turbulence point to it being a useful tool in the analysis of the observed ISM, especially when used simultaneously with other statistical techniques.Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, ApJ submitte

The Effectiveness of Wrist Guards for Reducing Wrist and Elbow Accelerations Resulting From Simulated Forward Falls

    Get PDF
The effectiveness of wrist guards and modifying elbow posture for reducing impact-induced accelerations at the wrist and elbow, for the purpose of decreasing upper extremity injury risk during forward fall arrest, has not yet been documented in living people. A seated human pendulum was used to simulate the impact conditions consistent with landing on outstretched arms during a forward fall. Accelerometers measured the wrist and elbow response characteristics of 28 subjects following impacts with and without a wrist guard, and with elbows straight or slightly bent. Overall, the wrist guard was very effective, with significant reductions in peak accelerations at the elbow in the axial and off-axis directions, and in the off-axis direction at the wrist by almost 50%. The effect of elbow posture as an intervention strategy was mixed; a change in magnitude and direction of the acceleration response was documented at the elbow, while there was little effect at the wrist. Unique evidence was presented in support of wrist guard use in activities like in-line skating where impacts to the hands are common. The elbow response clearly shows that more proximal anatomical structures also need to be monitored when assessing the effectiveness of injury prevention strategies
