Soviet Timber: Regional Supply and Demand, 1970-1990

This paper investigates a specific problem, namely the ability of Soviet regional timber resources, particularly those of Northern European Russia and Siberia, to sustain the demands expected to be placed on them by world and domestic markets in 1990, the final year of the fifteen-year intermediate-future planning or forecasting period now guiding much of the national and spatial development of the Soviet economy. Contrary to the findings of other studies, this analysis suggests that the Soviet forest resource has sufficient potential to satisfy all planned domestic requirements and a large share of foreign demand in 1990, and in the years immediately following that date, if technological improvements in the comprehensive use of roundwood continue to be made in the Soviet wood-processing industry. When expected 1990 Soviet timber exports are compared to the United Nation's estimate of world demand for Soviet timber in the year 2000, the USSR appears able to fulfill but not to overwhelm most potential world demand for its timber although world markets will likely continue to secure a significant portion of their coniferous timber needs from North American, especially Canadian forests

Review of Brandon: Geographical Perspectives on the Wheat City

This valuable contribution to the regional literature on Canadian urban places was produced to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Brandon University\u27s Department of Geography. The book demonstrates the depth, range, and degree of integration that a team of geographers can achieve. Brandon comprises eleven chapters, a preface by the three editors, and a foreword by one of Canada\u27s most distinguished historical geographers, John Warkentin, who reminds us that in regional studies it is absolutely vital to understand the experiences of the people who live there, and who have lived there in the past

    THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN (View-Master Haiku Series 1, 2 & 3)

THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN (View-Master Haiku Series 1, 2 & 3) My first session taking photos of bush junk near the K-Town train station led to an addiction. I started to see things within images that aroused deeper contemplation. The miniature Eiffel Tower within one landscape seemed to expertly align with a gasping car belly that paid homage to Peter Dam’s The Dogs That 7 Sparrows. Absent past owners became unconscious artists. Objects in their adopted environments became creatures with lives beyond previous incarnations. I saw things as representations, serendipitous alignments, but more importantly, a culture addicted to accumulating and discarding unwanted objects, no matter how obscene its scars upon the landscape. My girlfriend lives in K-Town but won’t go into the bush. She thinks dark magic draws people in and sucks the salt from them. There have been rapes and murders but it is the objects which remain that tell stories of the absent figures’ past lives entwined with the landscape. THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN is a meditation upon landscape and abandoned objects. It asks the viewer to dream of absent figures and reimagine their deserted objects new relationships with the burdened landscape

The Quality Control Algorithms Used in the Process of Creating the NASA Kennedy Space Center Lightning Protection System Towers Meteorological Database

The methodology and the results of the quality control (QC) process of the meteorological data from the Lightning Protection System (LPS) towers located at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) launch complex 39B (LC-39B) are documented in this paper. Meteorological data are used to design a launch vehicle, determine operational constraints, and to apply defined constraints on day-of-launch (DOL). In order to properly accomplish these tasks, a representative climatological database of meteorological records is needed because the database needs to represent the climate the vehicle will encounter. Numerous meteorological measurement towers exist at KSC; however, the engineering tasks need measurements at specific heights, some of which can only be provided by a few towers. Other than the LPS towers, Tower 313 is the only tower that provides observations up to 150 m. This tower is located approximately 3.5 km from LC-39B. In addition, data need to be QC'ed to remove erroneous reports that could pollute the results of an engineering analysis, mislead the development of operational constraints, or provide a false image of the atmosphere at the tower's location

Embedding of psycho-perceptual-motor skills can improve athlete assessment and training programs

Practitioners in a variety of sports seek unique ways to train athletes to better prepare them for competition. In this position paper, we argue that inclusion of psycho-perceptual-motor skills, from the fields of sport psychology and sport expertise, is crucial, but underutilized in the assessment and training of athletes. First, a brief introduction is provided as to why psycho-perceptual-motor skill is vital for training athletes. Second, examples are discussed relating to key concepts. These include the following: assessment of expertise discriminators such as visual anticipation under pressure contexts, incorporation of sports analytics and performance analysis to aid reflection upon previous experiences of good anticipation and coping with pressure, use of qualitative and quantitative measures to understand processes underlying performance and learning, as well as design of representative tasks for assessment and training anticipation under pressure contexts. Third, some recommendations are made to practitioners of sports teams to assist them in taking advantage of psycho-perceptual-motor skill to better prepare athletes for competition. Collectively, we hope this paper stimulates collaboration between practitioners of sports teams and scientists to create a greater focus upon integrated sport psychology and sport expertise in the training of athletes
