Power loss in open cavity diodes and a modified Child Langmuir Law

Diodes used in most high power devices are inherently open. It is shown that under such circumstances, there is a loss of electromagnetic radiation leading to a lower critical current as compared to closed diodes. The power loss can be incorporated in the standard Child-Langmuir framework by introducing an effective potential. The modified Child-Langmuir law can be used to predict the maximum power loss for a given plate separation and potential difference as well as the maximum transmitted current for this power loss. Promoting fairness in Sheffield

In the light of growing inequalities, several urban areas in the UK established Fairness Commissions between 2010 and 2013. In one of these areas, Sheffield, there was an attempt to do something different and innovative. Sheffield on average was, and remains one of the least deprived major cities in England, but also one of the most unequal. Following the publication of the Commission’s report which included an analysis of evidence and 90 recommendations, Sheffield responded by pursuing a number of city-wide initiatives involving different stakeholders. These included monitoring progress towards a fairer city, action on the living wage, a city-wide campaign to promote Sheffield as the fairest city, and ‘Sheffield Money’ to provide support for those households facing financial exclusion. The continuation of austerity measures still creates severe challenges to the ambitions and work of the Sheffield Fairness Commission, but experiences have shown how leadership through example and the co-production of an active campaign can give articulation to a shared desire to address injustices in the city

User`s guide for SDDS toolkit Version 1.4

The Self Describing Data Sets (SDDS) file protocol is the basis for a powerful and expanding toolkit of over 40 generic programs. These programs are used for simulation postprocessing, graphics, data preparation, program interfacing, and experimental data analysis. This document describes Version 1.4 of the SDDS commandline toolkit. Those wishing to write programs using SDDS should consult the Application Programmer`s Guide for SDDS Version 1.4. The procedure execution manager and its application to Advanced Photon Source operation

The Procedure Execution Manager (PEM) combines a complete scripting environment for coding accelerator operation procedures with a manager application for executing and monitoring the procedures. PEM is based on Tcl/Tk, a supporting widget library, and the dp-tcl extension for distributed processing. The scripting environment provides support for distributed, parallel execution of procedures along with join and abort operations. Nesting of procedures is supported, permitting the same code to run as a top-level procedure under operator control or as a subroutine under control of another procedure. The manager application allows an operator to execute one or more procedures in automatic, semi-automatic, or manual modes. It also provides a standard way for operators to interact with procedures. A number of successful applications of PEM to accelerator operations have been made to date. These include start-up, shutdown, and other control of the positron accumulator ring (PAR), low-energy transport (LET) lines, and the booster rf systems. The PAR/LET procedures make nested use of PEM`s ability to run parallel procedures. There are also a number of procedures to guide and assist tune-up operations, to make accelerator physics measurements, and to diagnose equipment.
