    Environmental sustainability of liquid food packaging: Is there a gap between Danish consumers' perception and learnings from life cycle assessment?

    The environmental impact of packaging has already been studied since the early development of the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, and today an extensive amount of studies exists. LCAs inform policy makers and guide companies in developing more environmentally sustainable packaging. From both a policy and a business perspective it is also relevant to understand what citizens and consumers recognize as being an environmentally sustainable packaging. Does perceived environmental sustain ability align with the results of LCAs? And if not, where do consumers go wrong? In this study, we investigate how well-educated young consumers living in Denmark understand the environmental sustainability of five different kinds of packaging for liquid food (milk, beer, soft drink, olive oil and skinned tomatoes) based on an on-line survey and qualitative interviews. The results are compared with a streamlined LCA we performed for packaging of beer and soft drinks, and they are validated by means of comparative LCAs of these five product categories published in scientific literature. The results of the consumer research show that consumers assess the environmental sustainability of the tested types of packaging primarily based on the material type and on what they can personally do at the disposal stage. The consumers covered in this study do, in general, not consider the impacts of production and of transport. Amongst the investigated packaging types, bio-based types and glass are perceived as the most environmentally sustainable ones, and plastic in general is perceived least favourable. Laminated cartons receive a mixed perception. LCA results show that plastic - and especially laminated cartons - can be environmentally preferable solutions, even though they may be difficult to recycle. Our streamlined LCA on beer and soft drink shows that there is a significant difference in environmental performance between one-way glass and refillable glass, but consumers seem not to be aware of this difference. Our findings show i) that there is a gap between Danish consumers' perception of environmental sustainability of packaging and LCA results, and ii) that consumers have limited knowledge of sustainability-related eco-labels. In order to close these gaps, actions are needed both from producers, retailers and policy makers.     Registration of dynamic MRI data and its impact on diagnostic process

    This paper discusses impact of a novel registration algorithm for dynamic MRI data on diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. The algorithm is based on a hybrid Euclidean-Lagrangian approach. It was applied to data acquired with low and higheld MRI scanners. The scans were processed with region-of-interest based and voxel-by-voxel approaches before and after the egistration. In this paper, we demonstrate that diagnostic parameters extracted from the data before and after the registration vary dramatically, which has a crucial effect on diagnostic decision. Application of the the proposed algorithm signicantly reduces artefacts incurred due to patient motion, which permits reduction of variability of the enhancement curves, yielding more distinguishable uptake, equilibrium and wash-out phases and more precise quantitative data analysis

    Computer-Assisted Image Analysis in Assessment of Peripheral Joint MRI in Inflammatory Arthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Objective: To summarize the feasibility of computer-assisted quantification of joint pathologies on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with inflammatory arthritis by evaluating the published data on reliability, validity, and feasibility. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed for original articles published from January 1, 1985, to January 1, 2021. We selected studies in which patients with inflammatory arthritis were enrolled, and arthritis-related structural damage/synovitis in peripheral joints was assessed on non-contrast-enhanced, contrast-enhanced (CE), or dynamic CE (DCE)-MRI using (semi)automated methods. Data were pooled using random-effects model. Results: Twenty-eight studies consisting of 1342 MRIs were included (mean age, 54.8 years; 66.7% female; duration of arthritis, 3.6 years). Among clinical/laboratory factors, synovial membrane volume (SV) was moderately correlated with erthrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) level (P 0.05). Computer-aided measurement of BEV (r = 0.92), SV (r = 0.82), and DCE-MRI biomarkers (r = 0.72 N-total; r = 0.74 N-plateau; r = 0.64 N-washout) were significantly correlated with the Rheumatoid Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (RAMRIS; P < 0.01), allowing for earlier assessment of drug efficacy. On average, (semi)automated analysis of BEV/SV took 17 minutes (vs. 9 minutes for the RAMRIS) and DCE-MRI took 4 minutes (vs. 33 minutes for manual assessment). Conclusion: Computer-aided image quantification technologies demonstrate excellent reliability and validity when used to quantify MRI pathologies of peripheral joints in patients with inflammatory arthritis. Computer-aided evaluation of inflammatory arthritis is an emerging field and should be considered as a viable complement to conventional observer-based scoring methods for clinical trials application

    An efficient 2D inversion scheme for airborne frequency domain data

    In many cases, inversion in 2D gives a better description of the subsurface compared with 1D inversion, but, computationally, 2D inversion is expensive, and it can be hard to use for large-scale surveys. We have developed an efficient hybrid 2D airborne frequency-domain electromagnetic inversion algorithm. Our hybrid scheme combines 1D and 2D inversions in a three-stage process, in which each step is progressively more accurate and computationally more expensive than the previous one. This results in an approximately 2x - 6x speedup compared with full 2D inversions, and with only minor changes to the inversion results. Our inversion structure is based on a regular grid, in which each sounding is discretized individually. The 1D modeling code uses layered models with derivatives derived through the finite-difference method, whereas our 2D modeling code uses an adaptive finite-element mesh, and it uses the adjoint-state method to calculate the derivatives. By incorporating the inversion grid structure into the 2D finite-element mesh, interpolation between the different meshes becomes trivial. Large surveys are handled by using local meshing to split large surveys into small sections, which retains the 2D information. The algorithm is heavily optimized and parallelized over the frequencies and sections, with good scalability even on nonuniform memory architecture systems, on which it is generally hard to achieve a satisfactory scaling. The algorithm has been tested successfully with various synthetic studies as well as field examples, of which results from two synthetic studies and a field example are shown

    The Discharge Companion Program: An Interprofessional Collaboration in Transitional Care Model Delivery

    To reduce readmission rates and avoid financial penalties from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, hospitals are seeking to implement innovative transitions of care (TOC) programs. This retrospective study evaluated the Discharge Companion Program (DCP), a pharmacist- and nurse-coordinated interprofessional, collaborative TOC program. Adult patients (18 years and older) from a single hospital, discharged with at least one qualifying diagnosis, were eligible for this service. The hospital transitional care coordinator nurse referred qualified patients to the DCP nurse coordinator, who scheduled telephonic medication therapy management (MTM) reviews with the DCP pharmacist at one- and three-weeks postdischarge. Hospital records and DCP documentation were reviewed to describe respective interventions and assess the impact on 30-day readmissions. A total of 456 patients were referred to the DCP between 31 August, 2015 and 7 September, 2016. Of the 340 patients who participated (DCP group), 44 (13%) compared to 17% (n = 20) of the usual care, were readmitted within 30-days postdischarge. The DCP pharmacists conducted 1242 clinical interventions with participants, demonstrating the benefits of an interprofessional TOC model involving multiple, pharmacist-delivered MTM intervention touchpoints within 30 days post-hospital discharge.SinfoniaRxOpen access journalThis item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries.     Is increased joint loading detrimental to obese patients with knee osteoarthritis? A secondary data analysis from a randomized trial

    SummaryObjectiveTo investigate whether increased knee joint loading due to improved ambulatory function and walking speed following weight loss achieved over 16 weeks accelerates symptomatic and structural disease progression over a subsequent 1 year weight maintenance period in an obese population with knee osteoarthritis (OA).MethodsData from a prospective study of weight loss in obese patients with knee OA (the CARtilage in obese knee OsteoarThritis (CAROT) study) were used to determine changes in knee joint compressive loadings (model estimated) during walking after a successful 16 week weight loss intervention. The participants were divided into ‘Unloaders’ (participants that reduced joint loads) and ‘Loaders’ (participants that increased joint loads). The primary symptomatic outcome was changes in knee symptoms, measured with the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) questionnaire, during a subsequent 52 weeks weight maintenance period. The primary structural outcome was changes in tibiofemoral cartilage loss assessed semi-quantitatively (Boston Leeds Knee Osteoarthritis Score (BLOKS) from MRI after the 52 weight maintenance period.Results157 participants (82% of the CAROT cohort) with medial and/or lateral knee OA were classified as Unloaders (n = 100) or Loaders (n = 57). The groups showed similar significant changes in symptoms (group difference: −2.4 KOOS points [95% CI −6.8:1.9]) and cartilage loss (group difference: −0.06 BLOKS points [95% CI −0.22:0.11) after 1 year, with no statistically significant differences between Loaders and Unloaders.ConclusionFor obese patients undergoing a significant weight loss, increased knee joint loading for 1 year was not associated with accelerated symptomatic and structural disease progression compared to a similar weight loss group that had reduced ambulatory compressive knee joint loads.Clinicaltrials.govNCT00655941

    Local administration of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) stimulates tendon collagen synthesis in humans

    Collagen is the predominant structural protein in tendons and ligaments, and can be controlled by hormonal changes. In animals, injections of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) has been shown to increase collagen synthesis in tendons and ligaments and to improve structural tissue healing, but the effect of local IGF-I administration on tendon collagen synthesis in human has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to study whether local injections of IGF-I would have a stimulating effect on tendon collagen synthesis. Twelve healthy nonsmoking men [age 62 Ϯ 1 years (mean Ϯ SEM), BMI 27 Ϯ 1] participated. Two injections of either human recombinant IGF-I (0.1 mL Increlex©) or saline (control) into each patellar tendon were performed 24-h apart, respectively. Tendon collagen fractional synthesis rate (FSR) was measured by stable isotope technique in the hours after the second injection. Simultaneously, interstitial peritendinous (IGF-I) and [procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP)], as a marker for type I collagen synthesis, were determined by microdialysis technique. Tendon collagen FSR and PINP were significantly higher in the IGF-I leg compared with the control leg (P &lt; 0.05). In conclusion, local IGF-I administration can directly enhance tendon collagen synthesis both within and around the human tendon tissue

    High concentrations of lead (Pb) in blood and milk of free-ranging brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Scandinavia

    Exposure to lead (Pb) is a global health problem for both humans and wildlife. Despite a dramatic decline in human Pb exposure following restrictions of leaded gasoline and industry and thereby an overall reduction of Pb entering the environment, Pb exposure continues to be a problem for wildlife species. Literature on scavenging terrestrial mammals, including interactions between Pb exposure and life history, is however limited. We quantified Pb concentration in 153 blood samples from 110 free-ranging Scandinavian brown bears (Ursus arctos), 1-25 years old, using inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry. We used generalized linear models to test effects of age, body mass, reproduction status and spatial distribution on the blood Pb concentrations of 56 female bears. We sampled 28 females together with 56 dependent cubs and paired their blood Pb concentrations. From 20 lactating females, we measured the Pb concentration in milk. The mean blood Pb concentration was 96.6 mu g/L (range: 38.7-220.5 mu g/L). Both the mean and range are well above established threshold concentrations for developmental neurotoxicity (12 mu g/L), increased systolic blood pressure (36 mu g/L) and prevalence of kidney disease in humans (15 mu g/L). Lactating females had higher Pb blood concentrations compared to younger, non-lactating females. Blood Pb concentrations of dependent cubs were correlated with their mother's blood Pb concentration, which in turn was correlated with the Pb concentration in the milk. Life-long Pb exposure in Scandinavian brown bears may have adverse effects both on individual and population levels. The high blood Pb concentrations found in brown bears contrast the general reduction in environmental Pb contamination over the past decades in Scandinavia and more research is needed to identify the sources and pathways of Pb exposure in the brown bears
