    Studija o biljkama uz rub cesta (Zapadna Anatolija, Turska)

    In this study, roadside plants distributed throughout the link roads of all the cities in West Anatolia in Turkey were investigated. The length of the selected 17 roads is around 2700 km. The total number of samples collected from the study area is 271 taxa belonging to 57 families. Among them, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae are the families that have the largest number of taxa, and Bromus L., Rumex L. and Silene L. are the genera that have the largest number of taxa. The most frequently found taxon throughout the selected roads is Valerianella coronata (L.) DC. and therophytes are the most frequently found life form.Istraživane su biljke uz rub svih cesta koje povezuju gradove u Zapadnoj Anatoliji u Turskoj. Duljina 17 izabranih cesta je iznosila oko 2700 km. Prikupljeni uzorci pripadali su 271 svojti, odnosno 57 biljnih porodica. Među njima su najzastupljenije bile porodice Asteraceae, Fabaceae i Poaceae, a među rodovima to su bili Bromus L., Rumex L. i Silene L.     Minimal residual disease (MRD) detection with translocations and T-cell receptor and immunoglobulin gene rearrangements in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients: a pilot study

    Objective: Monitoring minimal residual disease has become increasingly important in clinical practice of ALL management. Break-point fusion regions of leukaemia related chromosomal aberrations and rearranged immunoglobulin (Ig) and T cell-receptor (TCR) genes are used as leukaemia specific markers in genetic studies of MRD.Material and Methods: A total of 31 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed ALL were screened for eligibility criteria. Of those 26 were included in the study. One patient with partial response following induction therapy and four patients who were lost to follow-up after induction were excluded from the study; thus 21 patients were evaluated for MRD by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), heteroduplex analysis, sequencing and quantitative real time PCR techniques. Results: Chromosomal aberrations were detected in 5 (24%) of the patients and were used for MRD monitoring. Three patients had t(9;22) translocation, the other 2 had t(4;11) and t(1;19). MRD-based risk stratification of the16 patients analysed for Ig/TCR rearrangements revealed 3 low-risk, 11 intermediate-risk and 2 high-risk patients.Conclusion: MRD monitoring is progressively getting to be a more important predictive factor in adult ALL patients. As reported by others confirmed by our limited data there is a good correlation between MRD status and clinical outcome in patients receiving chemotherapy. The pilot-study presented here is the first that systematically and consecutively performs a molecular MRD monitoring of ALL patients in Turkey

    Plant patterns of silk based needlework, a traditional handcraft in Turkey

    640-643Plant based motifs have been used extensively in Turkish culture for centuries. One of the most intricate and delicate uses can be seen in traditional handicrafts crocheting, shuttle and needlework. Among these crafts, needlework has a special place. Needlework is interesting in many ways. For instance, only silk is used to make these fine patterns. For hundreds of years, needlework has been attached to the corners and sides of covers. The study aims to record and pass the knowledge of the use of plant based motifs in the needlework of Western Anatolia–Turkey. A total of 29 women, especially chosen by age, over 50 yrs old, from the cities Odemis, Beydag, Kiraz, and Tire in the of Izmir Province in Western Anatolia were interviewed. 24 taxa were identified. Among the identified patterns, the flower was the most common. Fruits and leaves were the other motifs identified. The use of different colours on the same pattern is interesting. Four different colours are used in the pattern of the pepper plant; green for the leaves, white for the petals, orange for the reproductive organs, and red for the fruits. In all identified patterns; orange, yellow and white are used for the reproductive organs with orange being the most preferred colour

    A survey was conducted in Dilek peninsula-Great Menderes Delta national park, with an area of 10.985 ha. Studies were undertaken during 1998-2001. Vegetation types including 3 new associations namely Urgino-Quercetum cocciferae, Querco-Oleatum europaea and Pistacio-Ceratonietum siliquae are reported for the first time from the area together with a list of over 50 endemics and endangered taxa like Campanula tomentosa. Land degradation practices due to demographic pressures, land clearence, fires and tourism are discussed
