    Lessons Learned About Education and Training From Select Socrates Dialogues

    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote, Men of genius are often dull and inert in society; as the blazing meteor, when it descends to earth, is only a stone. This thought correlates to the well quoted phrase, Looks can be deceiving. This idea is one which applies to many disciplines. Pertaining to this essay it demonstrates to us that the stone, although old and discarded, can possibly represent something much greater than is seen. When applied to philosophy, words that are old, silting dead on a page, may prove astounding when reexamined. The Socrates dialogues by Plato, can certainly be seen by some to represent this stone of old, dead, and unused wisdom. In this thesis it will be attempted to find something special; an ideology of what good education is. As well as, what lessons can be learned from this blazing meteor, who\u27s works have since become old. This will be done by examining excerpt\u27s from Plato\u27s dialogues, Meno, Ion, Gorgias, Crito, and Phaedrus, that explain a central theme, and then explaining it in terms of lessons to be learned for application to education

    Random solids and random solidification: What can be learned by exploring systems obeying permanent random constraints?

    In many interesting physical settings, such as the vulcanization of rubber, the introduction of permanent random constraints between the constituents of a homogeneous fluid can cause a phase transition to a random solid state. In this random solid state, particles are permanently but randomly localized in space, and a rigidity to shear deformations emerges. Owing to the permanence of the random constraints, this phase transition is an equilibrium transition, which confers on it a simplicity (at least relative to the conventional glass transition) in the sense that it is amenable to established techniques of equilibrium statistical mechanics. In this Paper I shall review recent developments in the theory of random solidification for systems obeying permanent random constraints, with the aim of bringing to the fore the similarities and differences between such systems and those exhibiting the conventional glass transition. I shall also report new results, obtained in collaboration with Weiqun Peng, on equilibrium correlations and susceptibilities that signal the approach of the random solidification transition, discussing the physical interpretation and values of these quantities both at the Gaussian level of approximation and, via a renormalization-group approach, beyond.Comment: Paper presented at the "Unifying Concepts in Glass Physics" workshop, International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy (September 15-18, 1999

    Bulk and Interfacial Shear Thinning of Immiscible Polymers

    Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the shear thinning behavior of immiscible symmetric polymer blends. The phase separated polymers are subjected to a simple shear flow imposed by moving a wall parallel to the fluid-fluid interface. The viscosity begins to shear thin at much lower rates in the bulk than at the interface. The entire shear rate dependence of the interfacial viscosity is consistent with a shorter effective chain length ss^* that also describes the width of the interface. This ss^* is independent of chain length NN and is a function only of the degree of immiscibility of the two polymers. Changes in polymer conformation are studied as a function of position and shear rate.Shear thinning correlates more closely with a decrease in the component of the radius of gyration along the velocity gradient than with elongation along the flow. At the interface, this contraction of chains is independent of NN and consistent with the bulk behavior for chains of length ss^*. The distribution of conformational changes along chains is also studied. Central regions begin to stretch at a shear rate that decreases with increasing NN, while shear induced changes at the ends of chains are independent of NN.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Incremental Grid-like Layout Using Soft and Hard Constraints

    We explore various techniques to incorporate grid-like layout conventions into a force-directed, constraint-based graph layout framework. In doing so we are able to provide high-quality layout---with predominantly axis-aligned edges---that is more flexible than previous grid-like layout methods and which can capture layout conventions in notations such as SBGN (Systems Biology Graphical Notation). Furthermore, the layout is easily able to respect user-defined constraints and adapt to interaction in online systems and diagram editors such as Dunnart.Comment: Accepted to Graph Drawing 201

    Random graph asymptotics on high-dimensional tori. II. Volume, diameter and mixing time

    For critical bond-percolation on high-dimensional torus, this paper proves sharp lower bounds on the size of the largest cluster, removing a logarithmic correction in the lower bound in Heydenreich and van der Hofstad (2007). This improvement finally settles a conjecture by Aizenman (1997) about the role of boundary conditions in critical high-dimensional percolation, and it is a key step in deriving further properties of critical percolation on the torus. Indeed, a criterion of Nachmias and Peres (2008) implies appropriate bounds on diameter and mixing time of the largest clusters. We further prove that the volume bounds apply also to any finite number of the largest clusters. The main conclusion of the paper is that the behavior of critical percolation on the high-dimensional torus is the same as for critical Erdos-Renyi random graphs.     Income, personality, and subjective financial well-being: the role of gender in their genetic and environmental relationships

Using a twins sample from the Survey of Midlife Development in the U. S. and controlling for personality as core self-evaluations (CSE), we found that men, but not women, had higher subjective financial well-being (SFWB) when they had higher incomes. This relationship was due to 'unshared environmental' factors rather than genes, suggesting that the effect of income on SFWB is driven by unique experiences among men. Further, for women and men, we found that CSE influenced income and SFWB, and that both genetic and environmental factors explained this relationship. Given the relatively small and male-specific relationship between income and SFWB, and the determination of both income and SFWB by personality, we propose that policy makers focus on malleable factors beyond merely income in order to increase SFWB, including financial education and building self-regulatory capacity

    Statistical mechanics of permanent random atomic and molecular networks: Structure and heterogeneity of the amorphous solid state

    Under sufficient permanent random covalent bonding, a fluid of atoms or small molecules is transformed into an amorphous solid network. Being amorphous, local structural properties in such networks vary across the sample. A natural order parameter, resulting from a statistical-mechanical approach, captures information concerning this heterogeneity via a certain joint probability distribution. This joint probability distribution describes the variations in the positional and orientational localization of the particles, reflecting the random environments experienced by them, as well as further information characterizing the thermal motion of particles. A complete solution, valid in the vicinity of the amorphous solidification transition, is constructed essentially analytically for the amorphous solid order parameter, in the context of the random network model and approach introduced by Goldbart and Zippelius [Europhys. Lett. 27, 599 (1994)]. Knowledge of this order parameter allows us to draw certain conclusions about the stucture and heterogeneity of randomly covalently bonded atomic or molecular network solids in the vicinity of the amorphous solidification transition. Inter alia, the positional aspects of particle localization are established to have precisely the structure obtained perviously in the context of vulcanized media, and results are found for the analogue of the spin glass order parameter describing the orientational freezing of the bonds between particles.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figure

    Rethinking psychopharmacotherapy: The role of treatment context and brain plasticity in antidepressant and antipsychotic interventions

    AbstractEmerging evidence indicates that treatment context profoundly affects psychopharmacological interventions. We review the evidence for the interaction between drug application and the context in which the drug is given both in human and animal research. We found evidence for this interaction in the placebo response in clinical trials, in our evolving knowledge of pharmacological and environmental effects on neural plasticity, and in animal studies analyzing environmental influences on psychotropic drug effects. Experimental placebo research has revealed neurobiological trajectories of mechanisms such as patients’ treatment expectations and prior treatment experiences. Animal research confirmed that “enriched environments” support positive drug effects, while unfavorable environments (low sensory stimulation, low rates of social contacts) can even reverse the intended treatment outcome. Finally we provide recommendations for context conditions under which psychotropic drugs should be applied. Drug action should be steered by positive expectations, physical activity, and helpful social and physical environmental stimulation. Future drug trials should focus on fully controlling and optimizing such drug×environment interactions to improve trial sensitivity and treatment outcome

    MMIC low-noise amplifiers and applications above 100 GHz

    In this paper we will present recent work on low noise amplifiers developed for very high frequencies above 100 GHz. These amplifiers were developed with a unique InP-based HEMT MMIC process. The amplifiers have been developed for both cryogenic and room temperature amplifier applications with state-of-art performance demonstrated from 100 GHz to 215 GHz
