    GNUsmail: Open framework for on-line email classification

    Real-time classification of massive email data is a challenging task that presents its own particular difficulties. Since email data presents an important temporal component, several problems arise: emails arrive continuously, and the criteria used to classify those emails can change, so the learning algorithms have to be able to deal with concept drift. Our problem is more general than spam detection, which has received much more attention in the literature. In this paper we present GNUsmail, an open-source extensible framework for email classification, which structure supports incremental and on-line learning. This framework enables the incorporation of algorithms developed by other researchers, such as those included in WEKA and MOA. We evaluate this framework, characterized by two overlapping phases (pre-processing and learning), using the ENRON dataset, and we compare the results achieved by WEKA and MOA algorithms

    [EN] Problem Statement:Athletes and especially children die around the world due to sports accidents. In this regard, changes in the federal sports regulations are not only aimed at favoring the game, but also to improve the safety of athletes. In handball, the goal is an essential piece of equipment and the anti-tip system used is fundamental to prevent accidents. Purpose:The objective of the present study was to know the opinion of different sports agents about the use of the Tutigool anti-tip system in the goals. Methods:The sample consisted of 60 subjects (players (51 ± 0.72), trainers (5 ± 14.01), and referees (4 ± 2.5)), of which, 96.7% were men and 3.3% women. A modified Likert-scale questionnaire was filled out (1 = strongly disagree to 7 = strongly agree) by the participants of the Four Nations International Tournament in January 2019 in the male U21 category, held in Santander (Spain). The questionnaire consisted of 18 items. Results: The most relevant results affirm that the system is appropriate for the handball game at the municipal and school level at 5.35 and for high level sports at 4.10. The average satisfaction with this system is 4.34. By agents, the coaches obtained 5.4, the referees 4.5 and the players 4.22. The Kruskal-Wallis test was carried out, which showed no significant differences in the mean scores (p> 0.05) given by players, trainers and referees in different aspects related to the anti-tip system. Conclusions:These results allow making a deep reflection and a change in handball regulations with the aim of adapting them and guaranteeing a safer practice, not only for athletes and amateur users, but also for sports facilities technicians who are responsible for the maintenance and handling of sports equipment.S

    Ensemble and Greedy Approach for the Reconstruction of Large Gene Co-Expression Networks

    In the recent years, the vast amount of genetic information generated by high-throughput approaches, have led to the need of new methods for data handling. The integrative analysis of diverse-nature gene information could provide a much-sought overview to study complex biological systems and processes. In this sense, Co-expression Gene Networks (CGN) have become a powerful tool in the comprehensive analysis of gene expression. Such networks represent relationships between genes (or gene products) by means of a graph composed of nodes and edges, where nodes represent genes and edges the relationships among them. Amongst the main features of CGN, sparseness and scale-free topology may notably affect the latter network analysis. Within this framework, structure optimization techniques are also important in the reduction of the size of the networks, not only improving their topology but also keeping a positive prediction ratio. On the other hand, ensemble strategies have significantly improved the precision of results by combining different measures or methods. In this work, we present Ensemble and Greedy networks (EnGNet), a novel two-step method for CGN inference. First, EnGNet uses an ensemble strategy for co-expression networks generation. Final score is estimated by major voting among three different methdos, i.e. Spearman and Kendall coefficients and Normalized Mutual Information. Second, a greedy algorithm optimizes both the size and the topological features of the network. Not only do achieved results show that this method is able to obtain reliable networks, but also that it significantly improves the topology of the networks. Moreover, the usefulness of the method is proven by an application to a human dataset on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), revealing an innate immunity-mediated response to this pathology in accordance with previous studies. These results are indicative of the potential of CGN, and EnGNet in particular, in the unveiling of the genetic causes for complex diseases. Finally, the implications of CGN in biomarkers discovery, could lead research towards earlier detection and effective treatment of these diseases

    Drag reduction on a blunt body by self-adaption of rear flexibly hinged flaps

    We study the aerodynamics of a blunt-based body with rear flexibly-hinged rigid flaps, subject to a turbulent flow of Reynolds number Re = 12000, under aligned and cross flow conditions with yaw angle β = 0◦ and β = 4◦. To that aim, different values of the equivalent torsional stiffness are considered, to cover the range of reduced velocity U∗ = (0, 3.48] in water tank experiments. The effect of the angular deflection of plates on the drag and near wake flow is analyzed, experimentally and numerically. The results show that, in the range of U∗ herein considered, the plates undergo an inwards quasi-static, self-adaptive deflection, which is symmetric for yaw angles β = 0◦ and asymmetric for β = 4◦. In particular, the plates feature small mean deformation angles for values of U∗ < 1, whereas a sharp and monotonic increase of such deflection occurs for U∗ > 1, i.e. for lower values of the hinge’s stiffness, with an asymptotic trend towards the larger values of U∗. A critical value of reduced velocity of U∗ ≃ 0.96 is obtained as the instability threshold above which plates depart from their initial equilibrium position. The progressive streamlining of the trailing edge translates into significant reductions of the associated mean drag coefficients. Thus, reductions close to 19% with respect to reference static plates configurations are obtained for the most flexible case of U∗ = 3.48 for both β = 0◦ and β = 4◦. A close inspection of the near wake reveals that the inwards progressive mean displacement of the plates yields a reduction in the recirculation bubble size. A symmetric evolution of the recirculating bubble is observed for β = 0◦, whereas the bubble becomes asymmetric for β = 4◦, with a larger leeward clockwise vortex. In both cases, the drag coefficient is shown to vary linearly with the global aspect ratio of the recirculating bubble. The analysis of the numerical results shows that the reduced extension of the recirculating bubble significantly alters the formation length and intensity of the eddies size and associated pressure.     Novel Entropy-Based Metrics for Long-Term Atrial Fibrillation Recurrence Prediction Following Surgical Ablation: Insights from Preoperative Electrocardiographic Analysis

    [EN] Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent cardiac arrhythmia often treated concomitantly with other cardiac interventions through the Cox-Maze procedure. This highly invasive intervention is still linked to a long-term recurrence rate of approximately 35% in permanent AF patients. The aim of this study is to preoperatively predict long-term AF recurrence post-surgery through the analysis of atrial activity (AA) organization from non-invasive electrocardiographic (ECG) recordings. A dataset comprising ECGs from 53 patients with permanent AF who had undergone Cox-Maze concomitant surgery was analyzed. The AA was extracted from the lead V1 of these recordings and then characterized using novel predictors, such as the mean and standard deviation of the relative wavelet energy (RWEm and RWEs) across different scales, and an entropy-based metric that computes the stationary wavelet entropy variability (SWEnV). The individual predictors exhibited limited predictive capabilities to anticipate the outcome of the procedure, with the SWEnV yielding a classification accuracy (Acc) of 68.07%. However, the assessment of the RWEs for the seventh scale (RWEs7), which encompassed frequencies associated with the AA, stood out as the most promising individual predictor, with sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) values of 80.83% and 67.09%, respectively, and an Acc of almost 75%. Diverse multivariate decision tree-based models were constructed for prediction, giving priority to simplicity in the interpretation of the forecasting methodology. In fact, the combination of the SWEnV and RWEs7 consistently outperformed the individual predictors and excelled in predicting post-surgery outcomes one year after the Cox-Maze procedure, with Se, Sp, and Acc values of approximately 80%, thus surpassing the results of previous studies based on anatomical predictors associated with atrial function or clinical data.     Subsampling OFDM-based ultrasonic data communication through metallic channels for monitoring of cargo containers

    An enhanced ultrasonic communication system based on piezoelectric transducers for monitoring of goods in cargo containers is presented. The proposed system consists of several sensors placed inside the container, whose data are collected and transmitted outside it. Data transmission is carried out by an ultrasonic communication channel, in order to avoid drilling the wall of the container. The proposed data communication system is based on the transmission of a 128-OFDM signal. This modulation has been chosen due to its robustness to channels with frequency-selective fading and its spectrum efficiency. In order to increase the signal bandwidth and to reduce the power consumption at the internal node (transmitter), the proposed system exploits the non-linearity of the metallic channel to transmit at higher resonance frequencies.     Influencia de los métodos de conservación en las actividades enzimáticas de suelos forestales mediterráneos

    Soil storage method may alter enzymatic activity being storage conditions of the soil samples prior to analysis decisive for the results. Studies made on freshly collected soils are generally preferred. However it is always not possible due to practical reasons since for example sampling is often restricted to short period of the year or because a great quantity of microbiological analyses must be made on time and by few people. On this context, soil storage methods are needed, being cold at 4°C the most widely used although sometimes alternative storage methods are also utilized. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of two alternative storage methods of soil samples (freezing at –20°C and air drying conservation methods) in comparison to cold at 4°C on the enzymatic activities (dehydrogenase, phosphatase, β-glucosidase and urease soil enzymes). Samples of two forest ecosystems (pine and holm oak forest stand) were taken in two different season of the year (winter and spring 2009). Results showed that enzymatic activities differed when freezing or air drying conservation methods were used in comparison with cold soil samples. Generally, alternative soil storage methods presented lower enzymatic activity than cold at 4°C. However, these changes depend on season and sampling location.El método de conservación del suelo utilizado puede alterar la actividad enzimática, siendo decisivas para los resultados, las condiciones de conservación previas a los análisis. Para los estudios es preferible realizar los análisis en muestras frescas y recién cogidas. Sin embargo, esto no es siempre posible por razones prácticas ya que las muestras se tienen que recoger en un corto periodo del año o porque los análisis los debe hacer poca gente y siempre en un determinado tiempo. En este contexto, se necesita un método de conservación, siendo el mantenimiento en el frigorífico a 4°C el método más usado, aunque existen otros métodos alternativos. El objetivo de este trabajo es el de evaluar el efecto de dos métodos alternativos de conservación (congelado a –20°C y secado a temperatura ambiente) sobre las actividades enzimáticas (deshidrogenasa, fosfatasa, β-glucosidasa y ureasa), en comparación con el mantenido en el frigorífico a 4°C. Las muestras se obtuvieron de dos zonas forestales diferentes (pinar y encinar) y en dos épocas distintas (primavera y verano de 2009). Los resultados mostraron diferencias en las actividades enzimáticas cuando se usó el congelado o secado al aire de las muestras de suelo en comparación con el mantenimiento en el frigorífico. De forma general, los métodos de conservación alternativos mostraron una menor actividad enzimática en las muestras de suelo analizadas.     Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes resulting in Primary Care Emergency visits

    Objetivo Analizar la prevalencia de los resultados negativos asociados a la medicación (RNM) que son causa de consulta en un servicio de urgencias de atención primaria (SUAP) en un entorno rural. Determinar la evitabilidad y la gravedad de los mismos. Diseño Estudio observacional descriptivo transversal. Emplazamiento SUAP de Mula. Murcia. Participantes Un total de 330 pacientes, en un periodo de 33 semanas. Mediciones principales Número y tipo de RNM: el farmacéutico, a través de los datos obtenidos de un cuestionario validado y la historia clínica, evaluó si existía relación entre los medicamentos que toma el paciente y el motivo de acudir a urgencias. En caso de sospecha de RNM se reevaluaba con el médico y se confirmaban o no los RNM identificados. Resultados De los 330 pacientes fueron evaluables 317. La media de edad de los pacientes era de 39,63 años y el 51,42% eran mujeres. La media de medicamentos que utilizaban fue de 1,38. Se detectaron un 26,50% (IC 95% 21,94-31,62) de pacientes con RNM como causa de visita a urgencias. El 53,57% de los RNM detectados fue de la categoría de efectividad y el 40,48% de necesidad. El 77,41% (IC-95% 67,35-85,01) de las visitas causadas por RNM fueron evitables. En cuanto a la gravedad, el 92,986% de los RNM eran leves. Conclusiones Una de cada 4 visitas al SUAP de Mula está causada por un RNM y, de ellas, el 77,41% son evitables.Objective Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes in Primary Care Emergency visits in a rural environment, and to determine their preventability and severity. Design Descriptive study with an analytical component. Site Primary Care Emergency Service (SUAP), Mula. Murcia. Patients The study consisted of 330 patients over a 33 week period. Method Number and type of Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes: Pharmacist through the data, a validated questionnaire and medical history, assessing whether there was a relationship between the medications and the patient, and the reason for going to the Primary Care Emergency. In case of suspicion of Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes the patient is reassessed by the doctor, and the Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes confirmed or not identified. Results Of the 330 patients, 317 were evaluable. The mean age of patients was 39.63 years and 51.42% were women. The mean number of drugs used was 1.38, and 26.50% (95% CI, 21.94% -31.62%) patients were detected with Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes as a cause of visiting the Primary Care Emergency. 53.57% of the detected Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes detected as regards efficacy was 53.75%, 40.48% as regards need. More than three-quarters (77.41%; 95% CI, 67.35% -85.01%) of emergency visits caused by Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes were avoidable. In terms of severity, 92.86% of the Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes were mild. Conclusions One in four Mula SUAP visits are due to a Pharmacotherapy negative outcomes, and 77.41% of them are preventable
