    Combatting intimate partner violence: representations of social and healthcare personnel working with gender-based violence interventions

    Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been declared a global epidemic by the World Health Organization. Although the attention paid to both the perpetrators and victims of gender-based violence has increased, scientific research is still lacking in regard to the representations of operators involved in interventions and management. Therefore, the following study explores how the representations of operators affect how gender violence can be managed and combatted through an ecological approach to this phenomenon, in addition to highlighting the roles of organizationallevel services and their cultural and symbolic substrates. In total, 35 health and social professionals were interviewed and textual materials were analyzed by thematic analysis. The evidence suggests that services contrasting gender-based violence utilize different representations and management approaches. The authors hope that these differences can become a resource, rather than a limitation, when combatting gender-based violence through the construction of more integrated networks and a greater dialogue among different services, in order to make interventions designed to combat gender-based violence more effective

    The Drift Chambers Of The Nomad Experiment

    We present a detailed description of the drift chambers used as an active target and a tracking device in the NOMAD experiment at CERN. The main characteristics of these chambers are a large area, a self supporting structure made of light composite materials and a low cost.     Testing whether muon neutrino flavor mixing is maximal

    The small difference between the survival probabilities of muon neutrino and antineutrino beams, traveling through earth matter in a long baseline experiment such as MINOS, is shown to be an important measure of any possible deviation from maximality in the flavor mixing of those states.Comment: Some revision has been made in the experimental discussions with two new figures replacing the old ones and a clarification of the accuracy of the perturbative result has been included.     On the Role of Low-Energy CP Violation in Leptogenesis

    The link between low-energy CP violation and leptogenesis became more accessible with the understanding of flavor effects. However, a definite well-motivated model where such a link occurs was still lacking. Adjoint SU(5) is a simple grand unified theory where neutrino masses are generated through the Type I and Type III seesaw mechanisms, and the lepton asymmetry is generated by the fermionic triplet responsible for the Type III seesaw. We focus exclusively on the case of inverted hierarchy for neutrinos, and we show that successful flavored leptogenesis in this theory strongly points towards low-energy CP violation. Moreover, since the range of allowed masses for the triplet is very restricted, we find that the discovery at the LHC of new states present in the theory, together with proton decay and unification of gauge couplings, can conspire to provide a hint in favor of leptogenesis.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    Measurement of the two-photon absorption cross-section of liquid argon with a time projection chamber

    This paper reports on laser-induced multiphoton ionization at 266 nm of liquid argon in a time projection chamber (LAr TPC) detector. The electron signal produced by the laser beam is a formidable tool for the calibration and monitoring of next-generation large-mass LAr TPCs. The detector that we designed and tested allowed us to measure the two-photon absorption cross-section of LAr with unprecedented accuracy and precision: sigma_ex=(1.24\pm 0.10stat \pm 0.30syst) 10^{-56} cm^4s{-1}.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    Background studies and shielding effects for the TPC detector of the CAST experiment

    Sunset solar axions traversing the intense magnetic field of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment may be detected in a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector, as X-rays signals. These signals could be masked, however, by the inhomogeneous background of materials in the experimental site. A detailed analysis, based on the detector characteristics, the background radiation at the CAST site, simulations and experimental results, has allowed us to design a shielding which reduces the background level by a factor of ~4 compared to the detector without shielding, depending on its position, in the energy range between 1 and 10 keV.     Role of the 2 zebrafish survivin genes in vasculo-angiogenesis, neurogenesis, cardiogenesis and hematopoiesis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Normal growth and development of organisms requires maintenance of a dynamic balance between systems that promote cell survival and those that induce apoptosis. The molecular mechanisms that regulate these processes remain poorly understood, and thus further <it>in vivo </it>study is required. Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family, that uniquely also promotes mitosis and cell proliferation. Postnatally, survivin is hardly detected in most tissues, but is upregulated in all cancers, and as such, is a potential therapeutic target. Prenatally, survivin is also highly expressed in several tissues. Fully delineating the properties of survivin <it>in vivo </it>in mice has been confounded by early lethal phenotypes following <it>survivin </it>gene inactivation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To gain further insights into the properties of survivin, we used the zebrafish model. There are 2 zebrafish <it>survivin </it>genes (<it>Birc5a </it>and <it>Birc5b</it>) with overlapping expression patterns during early development, prominently in neural and vascular structures. Morpholino-induced depletion of <it>Birc5a </it>causes profound neuro-developmental, hematopoietic, cardiogenic, vasculogenic and angiogenic defects. Similar abnormalities, all less severe except for hematopoiesis, were evident with suppression of <it>Birc5b</it>. The phenotypes induced by morpholino knockdown of one <it>survivin </it>gene, were rescued by overexpression of the other, indicating that the <it>Birc5 </it>paralogs may compensate for each. The potent vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) also entirely rescues the phenotypes induced by depletion of either <it>Birc5a </it>and <it>Birc5b</it>, highlighting its multi-functional properties, as well as the power of the model in characterizing the activities of growth factors.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Overall, with the zebrafish model, we identify survivin as a key regulator of neurogenesis, vasculo-angiogenesis, hematopoiesis and cardiogenesis. These properties of survivin, which are consistent with those identified in mice, indicate that its functions are highly conserved across species, and point to the value of the zebrafish model in understanding the role of this IAP in the pathogenesis of human disease, and for exploring its potential as a therapeutic target.</p

    Prediction of Neutrino Fluxes in the NOMAD Experiment

    The method developed for the calculation of the flux and composition of the West Area Neutrino Beam used by NOMAD in its search for neutrino oscillations is described. The calculation is based on particle production rates computed using a recent version of FLUKA and modified to take into account the cross sections measured by the SPY and NA20 experiments. These particles are propagated through the beam line taking into account the material and magnetic fields they traverse. The neutrinos produced through their decays are tracked to the NOMAD detector. The fluxes of the four neutrino flavours at NOMAD are predicted with an uncertainty of about 8% for nu(mu) and nu(e), 10% for antinu(mu), and 12% for antinu(e). The energy-dependent uncertainty achieved on the R(e, mu) prediction needed for a nu(mu)->nu(e) oscillation search ranges from 4% to 7%, whereas the overall normalization uncertainty on this ratio is 4.2%.Comment: 43 pages, 20 figures.     A prototype liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber for the study of UV laser multi-photonic ionization

    This paper describes the design, realization and operation of a prototype liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detector dedicated to the development of a novel online monitoring and calibration system exploiting UV laser beams. In particular, the system is intended to measure the lifetime of the primary ionization in LAr, in turn related to the LAr purity level. This technique could be exploited by present and next generation large mass LAr TPCs for which monitoring of the performance and calibration plays an important role.
