    ESG disclosure and firm performance before and after IR: The moderating role of governance mechanisms

    Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effect of environmental, social, and governance disclosure (ESGD) on firm performance (FP) before and after the introduction of integrated reporting (IR) further to exploring a potential moderation effect of corporate governance (CG) mechanisms on this relationship. Design/methodology/approach Ordinary least squares (OLS) and firm-fixed effects models were estimated based on data related to FTSE 350 between 2009 and 2018. The data has been mainly collected from Bloomberg and Capital IQ. This analysis was supplemented with applying a two-stage least squares (2 SLS) model to address any concerns regarding the expected occurrence of endogeneity problems. Findings The results show a positive and significant relationship between ESGD score and firm performance before and after 2013, among a sample of FTSE 350. Furthermore, the study is suggestive of a moderation effect of CG mechanisms (i.e., ownership concentration, gender diversity and board size) on the ESGD-FP nexus. Additionally, this paper finds that firms voluntarily associated with IR have a tendency to achieve better firm financial performance. Practical implications The findings of the present study have several policy and practitioner implications. For example, managers may engage in ESGD to enhance their firms’ financial performance by the voluntary involvement in IR, which believed to help investors to rationalise their investment decisions. Likewise, the results reiterate the crucial need to integrate more social, environmental and economic regulations to promote sustainability in the UK. The paper also offers a systematic picture for policymakers in the UK as well as future researchers. Social implications The findings of this paper indicate that IR plays a significant role in the relationship between ESGD and FP, where IR firms seemed to be achieving better FP as compared with their nonIR counterparts. This implies that stakeholders may have played a magnificent effort to encourage firms’ voluntary engagement in IR in the UK. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to explore the potential moderating effect of ownership concentration, gender diversity and board size on the relationship between ESGD and FP and to examine whether firms’ voluntary involvement in IR can lead to better FP after the introduction of IR in 2013 in the UK

    Bond stress between reinforcement bars and fly ash-based geopolymer concrete

    Geopolymer concrete is an innovative construction material that utilises industrial by-product materials, such as fly ash and slags to form a cement replacement for concrete manufacture. In order to simulate the behaviour of all types of reinforced concrete at all load levels, an understanding of the bond between the reinforcement and the concrete is required. This study involves 102 pullout test specimens with bar diameters of 12 to 16mm, concrete cover-to-diameter (Cc/db) ratios of 2, 3, 5.8 and 7.8, compressive strength of 33, 38 and 43MPa and a reinforcement corrosion level ranging from 0 to 85% in mass loss. The results show that the bond between the reinforcement and the geopolymer concrete is stronger than the bond that exists between the reinforcement and ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based concrete. Hence, existing models for OPC can be used as a lower-bounds estimate for analysis and design. Alternatively, new predictive models for the local bond properties and the bond strength variation with corrosion are presented for geopolymer concrete. The results also show that the influence of the Cc/db ratio on the bond strength reduces as the Cc/db ratio increases, while the influence of the compressive strength on the bond strength remains virtual.     CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Children and adolescents who live in situations of social vulnerability present a series of health problems. Nonetheless, affirmations that sensory and cognitive abnormalities are present are a matter of controversy. The aim of this study was to investigate aspects to auditory processing, through applying the brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and behavioral auditory processing tests to children living on the streets, and comparison with a control group. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in the Laboratory of Auditory Processing, School of Medicine, Universidade de São Paulo. METHODS: The auditory processing tests were applied to a group of 27 individuals, subdivided into 11 children (7 to 10 years old) and 16 adolescents (11 to 16 years old), of both sexes, in situations of social vulnerability, compared with an age-matched control group of 10 children and 11 adolescents without complaints. The BAEP test was also applied to investigate the integrity of the auditory pathway. RESULTS: For both children and adolescents, there were significant differences between the study and control groups in most of the tests applied, with significantly worse performance in the study group, except in the pediatric speech intelligibility test. Only one child had an abnormal result in the BAEP test. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that the study group (children and adolescents) presented poor performance in the behavioral auditory processing tests, despite their unaltered auditory brainstem pathways, as shown by their normal results in the BAEP test

    JAK2 Exon 14 Deletion in Patients with Chronic Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

    BACKGROUND: The JAK2 V617F mutation in exon 14 is the most common mutation in chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs); deletion of the entire exon 14 is rarely detected. In our previous study of >10,000 samples from patients with suspected MPNs tested for JAK2 mutations by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) with direct sequencing, complete deletion of exon 14 (Deltaexon14) constituted <1% of JAK2 mutations. This appears to be an alternative splicing mutation, not detectable with DNA-based testing. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We investigated the possibility that MPN patients may express the JAK2 Deltaexon14 at low levels (<15% of total transcript) not routinely detectable by RT-PCR with direct sequencing. Using a sensitive RT-PCR-based fluorescent fragment analysis method to quantify JAK2 Deltaexon14 mRNA expression relative to wild-type, we tested 61 patients with confirmed MPNs, 183 with suspected MPNs (93 V617F-positive, 90 V617F-negative), and 46 healthy control subjects. The Deltaexon14 variant was detected in 9 of the 61 (15%) confirmed MPN patients, accounting for 3.96% to 33.85% (mean = 12.04%) of total JAK2 transcript. This variant was also detected in 51 of the 183 patients with suspected MPNs (27%), including 20 of the 93 (22%) with V617F (mean [range] expression = 5.41% [2.13%-26.22%]) and 31 of the 90 (34%) without V617F (mean [range] expression = 3.88% [2.08%-12.22%]). Immunoprecipitation studies demonstrated that patients expressing Deltaexon14 mRNA expressed a corresponding truncated JAK2 protein. The Deltaexon14 variant was not detected in the 46 control subjects. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These data suggest that expression of the JAK2 Deltaexon14 splice variant, leading to a truncated JAK2 protein, is common in patients with MPNs. This alternatively spliced transcript appears to be more frequent in MPN patients without V617F mutation, in whom it might contribute to leukemogenesis. This mutation is missed if DNA rather than RNA is used for testing

    Significant association between polymorphism of the erythropoietin gene promoter and myelodysplastic syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) may be induced by certain mutagenic environmental or chemotherapeutic toxins; however, the role of susceptibility genes remains unclear. The G/G genotype of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1617640 in the erythropoietin (<it>EPO</it>) promoter has been shown to be associated with decreased EPO expression. We examined the association of rs1617640 genotype with MDS.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We genotyped the EPO rS1617640 SNP in 189 patients with MDS, 257 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 106 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 97 with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, 353 with chronic myeloid leukemia, and 95 healthy controls.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The G/G genotype was significantly more common in MDS patients (47/187; 25.1%) than in controls (6/95; 6.3%) or in patients with other leukemias (101/813; 12.4%) (all <it>P </it>< 0.001). Individuals with the G/G genotype were more likely than those with other genotypes to have MDS (odd ratio = 4.98; 95% CI = 2.04-12.13). Clinical and follow up data were available for 112 MDS patients and 186 AML patients. There was no correlation between EPO promoter genotype and response to therapy or overall survival in MDS or AML. In the MDS group, the GG genotype was significantly associated with shorter complete remission duration, as compared with the TT genotype (<it>P </it>= 0.03). Time to neutrophils recovery after therapy was significantly longer in MDS patients with the G/G genotype (<it>P </it>= 0.02).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These findings suggest a strong association between the rs1617640 G/G genotype and MDS. Further studies are warranted to investigate the utility of screening for this marker in individuals exposed to environmental toxins or chemotherapy.</p
