Gonadal hormones, but not sex, affect the acquisition and maintenance of a Go/No-Go odor discrimination task in mice
In mice, olfaction is crucial for identifying social odors (pheromones) that signal the presence of suitable mates. We used a custom-built olfactometer and a thirst-motivated olfactory discrimination Go/No-Go (GNG) task to ask whether discrimination of volatile odors is sexually dimorphic and modulated in mice by adult sex hormones. Males and females gonadectomized prior to training failed to learn even the initial phase of the task, which involved nose poking at a port in one location obtaining water at an adjacent port. Gonadally intact males and females readily learned to seek water when male urine (S+) was present but not when female urine (S−) was present; they also learned the task when non-social odorants (amyl acetate, S+; peppermint, S−) were used. When mice were gonadectomized after training the ability of both sexes to discriminate urinary as well as non-social odors was reduced; however, after receiving testosterone propionate (castrated males) or estradiol benzoate (ovariectomized females), task performance was restored to pre-gonadectomy levels. There were no overall sex differences in performance across gonadal conditions in tests with either set of odors; however, ovariectomized females performed more poorly than castrated males in tests with non-social odors. Our results show that circulating sex hormones enable mice of both sexes to learn a GNG task and that gonadectomy reduces, while hormone replacement restores, their ability to discriminate between odors irrespective of the saliency of the odors used. Thus, gonadal hormones were essential for both learning and maintenance of task performance across sex and odor type.We thank David Giese for help in programming the apparatus used in GNG testing and Alberto Cruz-Martin for comments on an early version of the manuscript. Monitoring the Low-Energy Gamma-Ray Sky Using Earth Occultation with GLAST GBM
Long term all-sky monitoring of the 20 keV – 2 MeV gamma-ray sky using the Earth occultation technique was demonstrated by the BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The principles and techniques used for the development of an end-to-end earth occultation data analysis system for BATSE can be extended to the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM), resulting in multiband light curves and time-resolved spectra in the energy range 8 keV to above 1 MeV for known gamma-ray sources and transient outbursts, as well as the discovery of new sources of gamma-ray emission. In this paper we describe the application of the technique to the GBM. We also present the expected sensitivity for the GBM
Earth Occultation Imaging of the Low Energy Gamma-Ray Sky with GBM
The Earth Occultation Technique (EOT) has been applied to Fermi's Gamma-ray
Burst Monitor (GBM) to perform all-sky monitoring for a predetermined catalog
of hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray sources. In order to search for sources not in the
catalog, thus completing the catalog and reducing a source of systematic error
in EOT, an imaging method has been developed -- Imaging with a Differential
filter using the Earth Occultation Method (IDEOM). IDEOM is a tomographic
imaging method that takes advantage of the orbital precession of the Fermi
satellite. Using IDEOM, all-sky reconstructions have been generated for ~sim 4
years of GBM data in the 12-50 keV, 50-100 keV and 100-300 keV energy bands in
search of sources otherwise unmodeled by the GBM occultation analysis. IDEOM
analysis resulted in the detection of 57 sources in the 12-50 keV energy band,
23 sources in the 50-100 keV energy band, and 7 sources in the 100-300 keV
energy band. Seventeen sources were not present in the original GBM-EOT catalog
and have now been added. We also present the first joined averaged spectra for
four persistent sources detected by GBM using EOT and by the Large Area
Telescope (LAT) on Fermi: NGC 1275, 3C 273, Cen A, and the Crab
Using airborne LiDAR Survey to explore historic-era archaeological landscapes of Montserrat in the eastern Caribbean
This article describes what appears to be the first archaeological application of airborne LiDAR survey to historic-era landscapes in the Caribbean archipelago, on the island of Montserrat. LiDAR is proving invaluable in extending the reach of traditional pedestrian survey into less favorable areas, such as those covered by dense neotropical forest and by ashfall from the past two decades of active eruptions by the Soufrière Hills volcano, and to sites in localities that are inaccessible on account of volcanic dangers. Emphasis is placed on two aspects of the research: first, the importance of ongoing, real-time interaction between the LiDAR analyst and the archaeological team in the field; and second, the advantages of exploiting the full potential of the three-dimensional LiDAR point cloud data for purposes of the visualization of archaeological sites and features
Measurement Of Quasiparticle Transport In Aluminum Films Using Tungsten Transition-Edge Sensors
We report new experimental studies to understand the physics of phonon
sensors which utilize quasiparticle diffusion in thin aluminum films into
tungsten transition-edge-sensors (TESs) operated at 35 mK. We show that basic
TES physics and a simple physical model of the overlap region between the W and
Al films in our devices enables us to accurately reproduce the experimentally
observed pulse shapes from x-rays absorbed in the Al films. We further estimate
quasiparticle loss in Al films using a simple diffusion equation approach.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, PRA
Preliminary evidence of increased striatal dopamine in a nonhuman primate model of maternal immune activation.
Women exposed to a variety of viral and bacterial infections during pregnancy have an increased risk of giving birth to a child with autism, schizophrenia or other neurodevelopmental disorders. Preclinical maternal immune activation (MIA) models are powerful translational tools to investigate mechanisms underlying epidemiological links between infection during pregnancy and offspring neurodevelopmental disorders. Our previous studies documenting the emergence of aberrant behavior in rhesus monkey offspring born to MIA-treated dams extends the rodent MIA model into a species more closely related to humans. Here we present novel neuroimaging data from these animals to further explore the translational potential of the nonhuman primate MIA model. Nine male MIA-treated offspring and 4 controls from our original cohort underwent in vivo positron emission tomography (PET) scanning at approximately 3.5-years of age using [18F] fluoro-l-m-tyrosine (FMT) to measure presynaptic dopamine levels in the striatum, which are consistently elevated in individuals with schizophrenia. Analysis of [18F]FMT signal in the striatum of these nonhuman primates showed that MIA animals had significantly higher [18F]FMT index of influx compared to control animals. In spite of the modest sample size, this group difference reflects a large effect size (Cohen's d = 0.998). Nonhuman primates born to MIA-treated dams exhibited increased striatal dopamine in late adolescence-a hallmark molecular biomarker of schizophrenia. These results validate the MIA model in a species more closely related to humans and open up new avenues for understanding the neurodevelopmental biology of schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders associated with prenatal immune challenge
