Calibration of Thermal Dissipation Probes for Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.)
The quantification of water flow through the stem is vital for date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) to promote a good water stress management. The thermal dissipation probe (TDP) method developed by Granier is widely used to evaluate transpiration of forest trees; however, there are contradictory reports regarding its reliability. Considerable errors in estimated sap flux density, which might be due to a lack ofspecies-specific calibrations. The TDP method uses a mathematical model that is based on an empirical equation to estimate sap flux density, which is claimed to be applicable to all tree species, independently of wood structure and anatomy. At the laboratory, we compared the rate of water uptake by cut stems with sap flux estimates derived from the TDP method to assess the validity of the method.Our calibration results were considerably different compared to the Granier’s original equation. Moreover, sap flux density was overestimated by 18.2 ± 0.5% when the original calibration parameters of Granierare employed. However, using new calibration parameters improved the accuracy of sap flow measurements. Our results indicated that it is not appropriate to use a general equation for different species. Therefore, previous estimations of date palm’s water requirement through thermal dissipation probes should be revised

Linear Contraction Behavior of Low-Carbon, Low-Alloy Steels During and After Solidification Using Real-Time Measurements
A technique for measuring the linear contraction during and after solidification of low-alloy steel was developed and used for examination of two commercial low-carbon and low-alloy steel grades. The effects of several experimental parameters on the contraction were studied. The solidification contraction behavior was described using the concept of rigidity in a solidifying alloy, evolution of the solid fraction, and the microstructure development during solidification. A correlation between the linear contraction properties in the solidification range and the hot crack susceptibility was proposed and used for the estimation of hot cracking susceptibility for two studied alloys and verified with the real casting practice. The technique allows estimation of the contraction coefficient of commercial steels in a wide range of temperatures and could be helpful for computer simulation and process optimization during continuous casting. © 2013 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International
Composición del aceite de la semilla del pistacho (Pistacia vera): efectos de la situación geográfica y de la variedad
This study was aimed at characterizing four Tunisian pistachio cultivations (Pistacia vera) from the Mateur (North), Nabeul (North-East), Kairouan (Middle) and Sfax (Middle- East) regions and two varieties, Mateur and Ohadi, considering fatty acid composition and main lipid class contents (polar lipids, diacylglycerols, triacylglycerols and free fatty acids) in ripe seeds. Lipid classes were separated using thin layer chromatography, and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were analyzed by gas chromatography. Oleic acid (C18:1 Δ9) was the major fatty acid for all samples; those of the Mateur region (the northern region) differed significantly with the lowest content in C18:1 (54.2 % of total fatty acids) and the highest in C18:2 (24.1 %). The total amount of fatty acids (TFA) in the seeds of Ohadi variety was significantly lower than that of the Mateur variety from the Sfax region. Triacylglycerols were most abundant in pistachio seeds from Nabeul (98.5% of total glycerolipids).Este estudio tiene como objetivo caracterizar cuatro cultivos de pistacho (Pistacia vera) de Túnez, de las regiones de Mateur (Norte), Nabeul (Nordeste), Kairouan (Centro) y Sfax (Centro-Este) y dos variedades, Mateur and Ohadi, considerando la composición en ácidos grasos y de lípidos mayoritarios (lípidos polares, diglicéridos, triglicéridos y ácidos grasos libres) de semillas maduras. Los lípidos se separaron mediante cromatografía en capa fina, y los ésteres metílicos de los ácidos grasos (FAMEs) se analizaron por cromatografía de gases. El ácido oleico (C18:1 Δ9) fue el mayoritario en todas las muestras; las de la región de Mateur (Norte) fueron significativamente distintas, presentando el contenido más bajo de C18:1 (54.2 % del total de ácidos grasos) y más alto de C18:2 (24.1 %). La cantidad total de ácidos grasos (TFA) en las semillas de la variedad Ohadi fue significativamente más bajo que el de la variedad Mateur de la región de Sfax. Los triglicéridos fueron el componente más importante en la semillas de pistacho de Nabeul (98.5% del total de glicerolípidos)

Synchrotron radiography studies of shear-induced dilation in semi-solid Al alloys and steels
An improved understanding of the response of solidifying microstructures to load is required to further minimize casting defects and optimize casting processes. This article overviews synchrotron radiography studies that directly measure the micromechanics of semisolid alloy deformation in a thin sample direct-shear cell. It is shown that shear-induced dilation (also known as Reynolds’ dilatancy) occurs in semisolid alloys with morphologies ranging from equiaxed-dendritic to globular, at solid fractions from the dendrite coherency point to ~90% solid, and it occurs in both Al alloys and carbon steels. Discrete-element method simulations that treat solidifying microstructures as granular materials are then used to explore the origins of dilatancy in semisolid alloys
Occurrence and functional diversity of bacteria in rhizosphere of citrus trees infested by Tylenchulus semipenetrans in a citrus-growing area of Tunisia
Tylenchulus semipenetrans is a major plant-parasitic nematode pest of citrus which readily infests sour orange rootstock Citrus aurantium. In order to examine the bacterial diversity and prevalence in the nematode infested citrus rhizosphere, 282 bacterial strains were isolated from roots of mature citrus trees, from egg masses of T. semipenetrans, and from nematophagous fungi in the orange producing area Cap bon in Tunisia. The rhizosphere of citrus had a high diversity of bacterial strains among the 20 agricultural parcels. According to morphological and biochemical characteristics, sixty bacteria strains were selected to explore the diversity of biological activity. None of the bacterial strains considered in this study have phytopathogenic activity. Each strain was identified and tested as a potential natural antagonist against fungi and against citrus nematode (egg hatching and juvenile mortality). Bacillus cereus, B. mycoides, B. pumilus and B. thuringiensis were the four most abundant species regardless the sampling location. Canonical discriminant analysis grouped the bacteria into five groups of biological activities: Group A, similar to water control, had not specific effect. Group B showed strong effect, and group C caused moderate growth inhibition of the nematophagous fungi Monacrosporium cianopagum CBM. Group C had stronger growth inhibition of the fungus Arthrobotrys conoides RGA than groups B and D.
