On a theoretical model for d-wave to mixed s- and d-wave transition in cuprate superconductors
A U(3) model proposed by Iachello for superconductivity in cuprate materials
is analyzed. The model consists of s and d pairs (approximated as bosons) in a
two-dimensional Fermi system with a surface. The transition occurs between a
phase in which the system is a condensate of one of the bosons, and a phase
which is a mixture of two types of bosons. In the current work we have
investigated the validity of the Bogoliubov approximation, and we used a
reduced Hamiltonian to determine a phase diagram, the symmetry of the phases
and the temperature dependence of the heat capacity.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Validating an inertial measurement unit for cricket fast bowling: a first step in assessing the feasibility of diagnosing back injury risk in cricket fast bowlers during a tele-sport-and-exercise medicine consultation
This study aimed to validate an array-based inertial measurement unit to measure cricket fast bowling kinematics as a first step in assessing feasibility for tele-sport-and-exercise medicine. We concurrently captured shoulder girdle relative to the pelvis, trunk lateral flexion, and knee flexion angles at front foot contact of eight cricket medium-fast bowlers using inertial measurement unit and optical motion capture. We used one sample t-tests and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) to determine the mean difference between the two systems and Smallest Worth-while Change statistic to determine whether any differences were meaningful. A statistically significant (p < 0.001) but small mean difference of −4.7° ± 8.6° (95% Confidence Interval (CI) [−3.1° to −6.4°], LOA [−22.2 to 12.7], SWC 3.9°) in shoulder girdle relative to the pelvis angle was found between the systems. There were no statistically significant differences between the two systems in trunk lateral flexion and knee flexion with the mean differences being 0.1° ± 10.8° (95% CI [−1.9° to 2.2°], LOA [−22.5 to 22.7], SWC 1.2°) and 1.6° ± 10.1° (95% CI [−0.2° to 3.3°], LOA [−19.2 to 22.3], SWC 1.9°) respectively. The inertial measurement unit-based system tested allows for accurate measurement of specific cricket fast bowling kinematics and could be used in determining injury risk in the context of tele-sport-and-exercise-medicine
Quantum and classical vibrational relaxation dynamics of N-methylacetamide on ab initio potential energy surfaces
Employing extensive quantum-chemical calculations at the DFT/B3LYP and MP2
level, a quartic force field of isolated N-methylacetamide is constructed.
Taking into account 24 vibrational degrees of freedom, the model is employed to
perform numerically exact vibrational configuration interaction calculations of
the vibrational energy relaxation of the amide I mode. It is found that the
energy transfer pathways may sensitively depend on details of the theoretical
description. Moreover, the exact reference calculations were used to study the
applicability and accuracy of (i) the quasiclassical trajectory method, (ii)
time-dependent second-order perturbation theory, and (iii) the instantaneous
normal mode description of frequency fluctuations. Based on the results,
several strategies to describe vibrational energy relaxation in biomolecular

Distribution Systems of Insecticide-Treated Bed Nets for Malaria Control in Rural Burkina Faso: Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial
BACKGROUND: Insecticide-impregnated bed nets (ITNs) have been shown to be a highly effective tool against malaria in the endemic regions of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). There are however different opinions about the role of ITN social marketing and ITN free distribution in the roll-out of ITN programmes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of free ITN distribution through antenatal care services in addition to an ITN social marketing programme in an area typical for rural SSA. METHODS: A cluster-randomised controlled ITN trial took place in the whole Kossi Province in north-western Burkina Faso, an area highly endemic for malaria. Twelve clusters were assigned to long-term ITN (Serena brand) social marketing plus free ITN (Serena brand) distribution to all pregnant women attending governmental antenatal care services (group A), and 13 clusters to ITN social marketing only (group B). The intervention took place during the rainy season of 2006 and thereafter. The trial was evaluated through a representative household survey at baseline and after one year. Serena ITN household ownership was the primary outcome measure. FINDINGS: A total of 1052 households were visited at baseline in February 2006 and 1050 at follow-up in February 2007. Overall Serena ITN household ownership increased from 16% to 28% over the study period, with a significantly higher increase in group A (13% to 35%) than in group B (18% to 23%) (p<0.001). INTERPRETATION: The free distribution of ITNs to pregnant women through governmental antenatal care services in addition to ITN social marketing substantially improved ITN household ownership in rural Burkina Faso. Micro-epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum malaria: Is there any difference in transmission risk between neighbouring villages?
BACKGROUND: Malaria control strategies are designed as a solution for either the whole region or the whole country and are assumed to suit every setting. There is a need to shift from this assumption because transmission may be different from one local setting to another. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of clinical malaria given the village of residence among under-five children in rural north-western Burkina Faso. METHODS: 867 children (6–59 months) were randomly selected from four sites. Interviewers visited the children weekly at home over a one-year period and tested them for fever. Children with fever were tested for malaria parasites. An episode of clinical malaria was defined as fever (axillary temperature ≥ 37.5°C) + parasites density ≥ 5,000 parasites/μl. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk of clinical malaria among children at a given site of residence. RESULTS: Children accumulated 758 person years (PYs). Overall, 597 episodes of clinical malaria were observed, giving an incidence rate of 0.79 per PY. The risk of clinical malaria varied amongst the four sites. Taking one village as reference the odds ratio for the other three sites ranged from 0.66; 95%CI: 0.44–0.98 to 1.49; 95%CI: 1.10–2.01. CONCLUSION: Malaria control strategies should be designed to fit the local context. The heterogeneity of transmission should be assessed at the district level to allow cost-effective resource allocation that gives priority to locations with high risk. Functional routine health information systems could provide the necessary data for context specific risk assessment
TL1A/DR3 axis involvement in the inflammatory cytokine network during pulmonary sarcoidosis
BACKGROUND:
TNF-like ligand 1A (TL1A), a recently recognized member of the TNF superfamily, and its death domain receptor 3 (DR3), firstly identified for their relevant role in T lymphocyte homeostasis, are now well-known mediators of several immune-inflammatory diseases, ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to inflammatory bowel diseases to psoriasis, whereas no data are available on their involvement in sarcoidosis, a multisystemic granulomatous disease where a deregulated T helper (Th)1/Th17 response takes place.
METHODS:
In this study, by flow cytometry, real-time PCR, confocal microscopy and immunohistochemistry analyses, TL1A and DR3 were investigated in the pulmonary cells and the peripheral blood of 43 patients affected by sarcoidosis in different phases of the disease (29 patients with active sarcoidosis, 14 with the inactive form) and in 8 control subjects.
RESULTS:
Our results demonstrated a significant higher expression, both at protein and mRNA levels, of TL1A and DR3 in pulmonary T cells and alveolar macrophages of patients with active sarcoidosis as compared to patients with the inactive form of the disease and to controls. In patients with sarcoidosis TL1A was strongly more expressed in the lung than the blood, i.e., at the site of the involved organ. Additionally, zymography assays showed that TL1A is able to increase the production of matrix metalloproteinase 9 by sarcoid alveolar macrophages characterized, in patients with the active form of the disease, by reduced mRNA levels of the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1.
CONCLUSIONS:
These data suggest that TL1A/DR3 interactions are part of the extended and complex immune-inflammatory network that characterizes sarcoidosis during its active phase and may contribute to the pathogenesis and to the progression of the disease
Towards an understanding of hole superconductivity
From the very beginning K. Alex M\"uller emphasized that the materials he and
George Bednorz discovered in 1986 were superconductors. Here I would
like to share with him and others what I believe to be key reason for why
high cuprates as well as all other superconductors are hole
superconductors, which I only came to understand a few months ago. This paper

Built-in and induced polarization across LaAlO/SrTiO heterojunctions
Ionic crystals terminated at oppositely charged polar surfaces are inherently
unstable and expected to undergo surface reconstructions to maintain
electrostatic stability. Essentially, an electric field that arises between
oppositely charged atomic planes gives rise to a built-in potential that
diverges with thickness. In ultra thin film form however the polar crystals are
expected to remain stable without necessitating surface reconstructions, yet
the built-in potential has eluded observation. Here we present evidence of a
built-in potential across polar \lao ~thin films grown on \sto ~substrates, a
system well known for the electron gas that forms at the interface. By
performing electron tunneling measurements between the electron gas and a
metallic gate on \lao ~we measure a built-in electric field across \lao ~of 93
meV/\AA. Additionally, capacitance measurements reveal the presence of an
induced dipole moment near the interface in \sto, illuminating a unique
property of \sto ~substrates. We forsee use of the ionic built-in potential as
an additional tuning parameter in both existing and novel device architectures,

Constraints on Non-Newtonian Gravity from Recent Casimir Force Measurements
Corrections to Newton's gravitational law inspired by extra dimensional
physics and by the exchange of light and massless elementary particles between
the atoms of two macrobodies are considered. These corrections can be described
by the potentials of Yukawa-type and by the power-type potentials with
different powers. The strongest up to date constraints on the corrections to
Newton's gravitational law are reviewed following from the E\"{o}tvos- and
Cavendish-type experiments and from the measurements of the Casimir and van der
Waals force. We show that the recent measurements of the Casimir force gave the
possibility to strengthen the previously known constraints on the constants of
hypothetical interactions up to several thousand times in a wide interaction
range. Further strengthening is expected in near future that makes Casimir
force measurements a prospective test for the predictions of fundamental
