Hydrodynamical Neutron Star Kicks in Three Dimensions
Using three-dimensional (3D) simulations of neutrino-powered supernova
explosions we show that the hydrodynamical kick scenario proposed by Scheck et
al. on the basis of two-dimensional (2D) models can yield large neutron star
(NS) recoil velocities also in 3D. Although the shock stays relatively
spherical, standing accretion-shock and convective instabilities lead to a
globally asymmetric mass and energy distribution in the postshock layer. An
anisotropic momentum distribution of the ejecta is built up only after the
explosion sets in. Total momentum conservation implies the acceleration of the
NS on a timescale of 1-3 seconds, mediated mainly by long-lasting, asymmetric
accretion downdrafts and the anisotropic gravitational pull of large
inhomogeneities in the ejecta. In a limited set of 15 solar-mass models with an
explosion energy of about 10^51 erg this stochastic mechanism is found to
produce kicks from 500 km/s, and >1000 km/s seem possible. Strong
rotational flows around the accreting NS do not develop in our collapsing,
non-rotating progenitors. The NS spins therefore remain low with estimated

Psychiatric characterization of children with genetic causes of hyperandrogenism
Objective: Very little is known about the mental health status in children with genetic causes of hyperandrogenism. This study sought to characterize psychiatric morbidity in this group. Design/methods: Children (8-18 years) with the diagnosis of classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) or familial male precocious puberty (FMPP) underwent a semi-structured psychiatric interview, the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version. According to sex and the literature, incidence of identified psychopathology was compared between the two endocrinological groups. We evaluated 72 patients: 54 CAH (21 females) and 18 FMPP. Results: Twenty-four (44.4%) CAH patients and 10 (55.6%) FMPP patients met the criteria for at least one lifetime psychiatric diagnosis. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was present in 18.2% of CAH males, 44.4% of FMPP males, and one case (4.8%) in CAH females. A high rate of anxiety disorders was also found in all the three groups (17-21%). Relative to females with CAH, the FMPP patients exhibited higher rates of ADHD. Age at diagnosis and the treatment modalities were not associated with psychopathology. Rates of psychiatric disorder, specifically ADHD and anxiety disorders, were higher than in the general population. Conclusion: Although anxiety disorders may occur at an increased rate in children with chronic illness, androgens may contribute to higher risk for psychopathology in pediatric patients with genetic cause of excess androgen. Early diagnosis and treatment of childhood hyperandrogenism is essential for optimal development. The results suggest that assessment for psychiatric disorders should be part of the routine evaluation of these patients
Test Results on the Silicon Pixel Detector for the TTF-FEL Beam Trajectory Monitor
Test measurements on the silicon pixel detector for the beam trajectory
monitor at the free electron laser of the TESLA test facility are presented. To
determine the electronic noise of detector and read-out and to calibrate the
signal amplitude of different pixels the 6 keV photons of the manganese K line
are used. Two different methods determine the spatial accuracy of the detector:
In one setup a laser beam is focused to a straight line and moved across the
pixel structure. In the other the detector is scanned using a low-intensity
electron beam of an electron microscope. Both methods show that the symmetry
axis of the detector defines a straight line within 0.4 microns. The
sensitivity of the detector to low energy X-rays is measured using a vacuum
ultraviolet beam at the synchrotron light source HASYLAB. Additionally, the

The regulation of positive and negative social feedback: a psychophysiological study
Everyday social evaluations are psychologically potent and trigger self-reflective thoughts and feelings. The present study sought to examine the psychophysiological impact of such evaluations using eye tracking, pupillometry, and heart-rate variability. Fifty-nine healthy adult volunteers received rigged social feedback (criticism and praise) based on their photograph. Gaze data were collected to investigate processes of attentional deployment/allocation toward the self or the evaluator expressing criticism or praise. Whereas voluntary attention was directed to evaluators who expressed praise, attention was drawn to one's own picture after criticism. Pupil dilation and heart-rate variability were larger in response to criticism as compared to praise, suggesting a flexible and adaptive emotion regulatory effort in response to social information that triggers an affective response. Altogether, healthy individuals recruited more regulatory resources to cope with negative (as compared to positive) social feedback, and this processing of social feedback was associated with adjustments in self-focused attention
UV irradiation induces homologous recombination genes in the model archaeon, Halobacterium sp. NRC-1
BACKGROUND: A variety of strategies for survival of UV irradiation are used by cells, ranging from repair of UV-damaged DNA, cell cycle arrest, tolerance of unrepaired UV photoproducts, and shielding from UV light. Some of these responses involve UV-inducible genes, including the SOS response in bacteria and an array of genes in eukaryotes. To address the mechanisms used in the third branch of life, we have studied the model archaeon, Halobacterium sp. strain NRC-1, which tolerates high levels of solar radiation in its natural hypersaline environment. RESULTS: Cells were irradiated with 30–70 J/m(2 )UV-C and an immunoassay showed that the resulting DNA damage was largely repaired within 3 hours in the dark. Under such conditions, transcriptional profiling showed the most strongly up-regulated gene was radA1, the archaeal homolog of rad51/recA, which was induced 7-fold. Additional genes involved in homologous recombination, such as arj1 (recJ-like exonuclease), dbp (eukaryote-like DNA binding protein of the superfamily I DNA and RNA helicases), and rfa3 (replication protein A complex), as well as nrdJ, encoding for cobalamin-dependent ribonucleotide reductase involved in DNA metabolism, were also significantly induced in one or more of our experimental conditions. Neither prokaryotic nor eukaryotic excision repair gene homologs were induced and there was no evidence of an SOS-like response. CONCLUSION: These results show that homologous recombination plays an important role in the cellular response of Halobacterium sp. NRC-1 to UV damage. Homologous recombination may permit rescue of stalled replication forks, and/or facilitate recombinational repair. In either case, this provides a mechanism for the observed high-frequency recombination among natural populations of halophilic archaea
Dealing with non-metric dissimilarities in fuzzy central clustering algorithms
Clustering is the problem of grouping objects on the basis of a similarity measure among them. Relational clustering methods can be employed when a feature-based representation of the objects is not available, and their description is given in terms of pairwise (dis)similarities. This paper focuses on the relational duals of fuzzy central clustering algorithms, and their application in situations when patterns are represented by means of non-metric pairwise dissimilarities. Symmetrization and shift operations have been proposed to transform the dissimilarities among patterns from non-metric to metric. In this paper, we analyze how four popular fuzzy central clustering algorithms are affected by such transformations. The main contributions include the lack of invariance to shift operations, as well as the invariance to symmetrization. Moreover, we highlight the connections between relational duals of central clustering algorithms and central clustering algorithms in kernel-induced spaces. One among the presented algorithms has never been proposed for non-metric relational clustering, and turns out to be very robust to shift operations. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
Statistical anisotropy of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
Direct numerical simulations of decaying and forced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)
turbulence without and with mean magnetic field are analyzed by higher-order
two-point statistics. The turbulence exhibits statistical anisotropy with
respect to the direction of the local magnetic field even in the case of global
isotropy. A mean magnetic field reduces the parallel-field dynamics while in
the perpendicular direction a gradual transition towards two-dimensional MHD
turbulence is observed with inertial-range scaling of the
perpendicular energy spectrum. An intermittency model based on the Log-Poisson
approach, , is able to describe the observed

Compositionality, stochasticity and cooperativity in dynamic models of gene regulation
We present an approach for constructing dynamic models for the simulation of
gene regulatory networks from simple computational elements. Each element is
called a ``gene gate'' and defines an input/output-relationship corresponding
to the binding and production of transcription factors. The proposed reaction
kinetics of the gene gates can be mapped onto stochastic processes and the
standard ode-description. While the ode-approach requires fixing the system's
topology before its correct implementation, expressing them in stochastic
pi-calculus leads to a fully compositional scheme: network elements become
autonomous and only the input/output relationships fix their wiring. The
modularity of our approach allows to pass easily from a basic first-level
description to refined models which capture more details of the biological
system. As an illustrative application we present the stochastic repressilator,
an artificial cellular clock, which oscillates readily without any cooperative

Filariasis of the Axilla in a Patient Returning from Travel Abroad: A Case Report
Background: The term filariasis comprises a group of parasitic infections caused by helminths belonging to different genera in the superfamily Filaroidea. The human parasites occur mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, but filariae are also found in temperate climates, where they can infect wild and domestic animals. Humans are rarely infected by these zoonotic parasites. Patients and Methods: A 55-year-old patient presented with a new-onset, subcutaneous, non-tender palpable mass in the right axilla. Ultrasonography showed a 1.3-cm, solid, singular encapsulated node. Sonography of the breast on both sides, axilla and lymphatic drainage on the left side, lymphatic drainage on the right side, and mammography on both sides were without pathological findings. The node was excised under local anesthesia as the patient refused minimal invasive biopsy. Results: On histopathological examination, the tail of a parasite of the group of filariae was found. The patient revealed that she had stayed in Africa and Malaysia for professional reasons. 6 months before the time of diagnosis, she had also suffered from a fever and poor general condition after a trip abroad. The patient was referred for further treatment to the Institute for Tropical Medicine at the University of Dusseldorf, where a treatment with ivermectin was conducted on the basis of positive staining with antibodies against filariae. Conclusion: Our case demonstrates the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between breast center, pathology, and other specialties such as microbiology and tropical medicine
