Good governance in the entities of the social economy

Entities of the Social Economy are ruled by practices of collective action and democratic participation within the framework of what is known as good governance. This is based on a set of values and principles belonging to the organisations. These practices reach beyond the frontiers of the entity and have an impact on society with the application of policies of local development, social and environmental responsibility, and cooperation. This article seeks to establish a relationship between said good governance practices and business results by means of a literature study, finally formulating a theoretical model of good governance in Social Economy, which will be contrasted empirically in subsequent studies.Social economy, good governance, democratic management, cooperation, results, social cohesion, organisational culture, efficient management.

Prochlorococcus is responsible for a significant part of CO2 fixation in the ocean. It was long considered an autotrophic cyanobacterium, but our group has shown in laboratory experiments that Prochlorococcus can take up glucose like a heterotrophic organism. However, the mechanisms of glucose uptake and its occurrence in the ocean have not been shown. Here we report that the gene melB confers capability for glucose uptake in P. marinus SS120. We utilized a cyanobacterium unable to take up glucose to engineer strains that express the melB gene. These were capable of specific glucose uptake over a wide range of glucose concentrations, showing multiphasic transport kinetics. The Ks constant of the high affinity phase was in the nanomolar range, consistent with the average concentration of glucose in the ocean. Furthermore, we were able to observe glucose uptake by Prochlorococcus in the Atlantic Ocean, where glucose concentrations were 0.5-2.7 nM. Therefore Prochlorococcus is a photoheterotrophic organism, taking up not only organic compounds with essential elements, but also molecules devoid of such elements, like glucose. The biogeochemical implications of this finding for the carbon cycle are far reaching, given the global importance of Prochlorococcus; they could significantly change the consideration of these cyanobacteria to photoheterotrophs enabled to tune their trophic behavior depending on the circumstances.

An Analysis Of Strategic Information Published By Large Spanish Hotel Chains.

At present when the market is increasingly demanding free-flowing information concerning corporate expectations, we often encounter criticism as to the absence of this type of information in annual reports. The relevance of this lack of information is based, among other reasons, on the fact that it is the only information that businesses make public. With this hypothesis as a point of departure, we have asked ourselves if this same situation is also produced in the Spanish hotel sector. Our interest in this business is due to the importance of the tourism sector in the Spanish economy. To contrast this hypothesis, we have carried out field work consisting of, firstly, a review of annual reports for the fiscal years 2000, 2001 and 2002 published by hotel chains representative of the sector and, secondly, an analysis of the information concerning the strategies published in these reports. This paper is part of a research stream that remains open and whose objective is the elaboration of a Balanced Scorecard prototype for the Spanish Hotel Sector.
