Efficacy of HIV/STI behavioral interventions for heterosexual African American men in the United States: a meta-analysis
This meta-analysis estimates the overall efficacy of HIV prevention interventions to reduce HIV sexual risk behaviors and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among heterosexual African American men. A comprehensive search of the literature published during 1988–2008 yielded 44 relevant studies. Interventions significantly reduced HIV sexual risk behaviors and STIs. The stratified analysis for HIV sexual risk behaviors indicated that interventions were efficacious for studies specifically targeting African American men and men with incarceration history. In addition, interventions that had provision/referral of medical services, male facilitators, shorter follow-up periods, or emphasized the importance of protecting family and significant others were associated with reductions in HIV sexual risk behaviors. Meta-regression analyses indicated that the most robust intervention component is the provision/referral of medical services. Findings indicate that HIV interventions for heterosexual African American men might be more efficacious if they incorporated a range of health care services rather than HIV/STI-related services alone
A high-field adiabatic fast passage ultracold neutron spin flipper for the UCNA experiment
The UCNA collaboration is making a precision measurement of the β asymmetry (A) in free neutron decay using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). A critical component of this experiment is an adiabatic fast passage neutron spin flipper capable of efficient operation in ambient magnetic fields on the order of 1 T. The requirement that it operate in a high field necessitated the construction of a free neutron spin flipper based, for the first time, on a birdcage resonator. The design, construction, and initial testing of this spin flipper prior to its use in the first measurement of A with UCN during the 2007 run cycle of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center's 800 MeV proton accelerator is detailed. These studies determined the flipping efficiency of the device, averaged over the UCN spectrum present at the location of the spin flipper, to be ϵ(overbar) = 0.9985(4)
Multiplicative Measurement Error and the Simulation Extrapolation Method
Whereas the literature on additive measurement error has known a considerable treatment, less work has been done for multiplicative noise. In this paper we concentrate on multiplicative measurement error in the covariates, which contrary to additive error not only modifies proportionally the original value, but also conserves the structural zeros. This paper compares three variants to specify the multiplicative measurement error model in the simulation step of the Simulation-Extrapolation (SIMEX) method originally proposed by Cook and Stefanski (1994): i) as an additive one without using a logarithmic transformation, ii) as the well-known logarithmic transformation of the multiplicative error model, and iii) as an approach using the multiplicative measurement error model as such. The aim of the paper is to analyze how well these three approaches reduce the bias caused by the multiplicative measurement error. We apply three variants to the case of data masking by multiplicative measurement error, in order to obtain parameter estimates of the true data generating process. We produce Monte Carlo evidence on how the reduction of data quality can be minimized

Fatigue Intervention by Nurses Evaluation - The FINE Trial. A randomised controlled trial of nurse led self-help treatment for patients in primary care with chronic fatigue syndrome: study protocol. [ISRCTN74156610]
Background: Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as ME (CFS/ME), is a condition characterised primarily by severe, disabling fatigue, of unknown origin, which has a poor prognosis and serious personal and economic consequences. Evidence for the effectiveness of any treatment for CFS/ME in primary care, where most patients are seen, is sparse. Recently, a brief, pragmatic treatment for CFS/ME, based on a physiological dysregulation model of the condition, was shown to be successful in improving fatigue and physical functioning in patients in secondary care. The treatment involves providing patients with a readily understandable explanation of their symptoms, from which flows the rationale for a graded rehabilitative plan, developed collaboratively with the therapist. The present trial will test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of pragmatic rehabilitation when delivered by specially trained general nurses in primary care. We selected a client-centred counselling intervention, called supportive listening, as a comparison treatment. Counselling has been shown to be as effective as cognitive behaviour therapy for treating fatigue in primary care, is more readily available, and controls for supportive therapist contact time. Our control condition is treatment as usual by the general practitioner (GP). Methods and design: This study protocol describes the design of an ongoing, single-blind, pragmatic randomized controlled trial of a brief (18 week) self-help treatment, pragmatic rehabilitation, delivered by specially trained nurse-therapists in patients' homes, compared with nurse-therapist delivered supportive listening and treatment as usual by the GP. An economic evaluation, taking a societal viewpoint, is being carried out alongside the clinical trial. Three adult general nurses were trained over a six month period to deliver the two interventions. Patients aged over 18 and fulfilling the Oxford criteria for CFS are assessed at baseline, after the intervention, and again one year later. Primary outcomes are self-reported physical functioning and fatigue at one year, and will be analysed on an intention-to-treat basis. A Single-Amino-Acid Polymorphism in Chikungunya Virus E2 Glycoprotein Influences Glycosaminoglycan Utilization
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a reemerging arbovirus responsible for outbreaks of infection throughout Asia and Africa, causing an acute illness characterized by fever, rash, and polyarthralgia. Although CHIKV infects a broad range of host cells, little is known about how CHIKV binds and gains access to the target cell interior. In this study, we tested whether glycosaminoglycan (GAG) binding is required for efficient CHIKV replication using CHIKV vaccine strain 181/25 and clinical isolate SL15649. Preincubation of strain 181/25, but not SL15649, with soluble GAGs resulted in dose-dependent inhibition of infection. While parental Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are permissive for both strains, neither strain efficiently bound to or infected mutant CHO cells devoid of GAG expression. Although GAGs appear to be required for efficient binding of both strains, they exhibit differential requirements for GAGs, as SL15649 readily infected cells that express excess chondroitin sulfate but that are devoid of heparan sulfate, whereas 181/25 did not. We generated a panel of 181/25 and SL15649 variants containing reciprocal amino acid substitutions at positions 82 and 318 in the E2 glycoprotein. Reciprocal exchange at residue 82 resulted in a phenotype switch; Gly82 results in efficient infection of mutant CHO cells but a decrease in heparin binding, whereas Arg82 results in reduced infectivity of mutant cells and an increase in heparin binding. These results suggest that E2 residue 82 is a primary determinant of GAG utilization, which likely mediates attenuation of vaccine strain 181/25
Absolute and Relative Surrogate Measurements of the \u3csup\u3e236\u3c/sup\u3eU(\u3cem\u3en,f\u3c/em\u3e) Cross Section as a Probe of Angular Momentum Effects
Using both the absolute and relative surrogate techniques, the 236U(n,f) cross section was deduced over an equivalent neutron energy range of 0 to 20 MeV. A 42 MeV 3He beam from the 88 Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was used to perform a (3He,α) pickup reaction on targets of 235U (Jπ=7/2−) and 238U (Jπ = 0+) and the fission decay probabilities were determined. The 235U(3He,αf) and 238U(3He,αf) were surrogates for 233U(n,f) and 236U(n,f), respectively. The cross sections extracted using the surrogate method were compared to directly measured cross sections. The sensitivity of these cross sections to the Jπ -population distributions was explored

The utilisation of health research in policy-making: Concepts, examples and methods of assessment
The importance of health research utilisation in policy-making, and of understanding the
mechanisms involved, is increasingly recognised. Recent reports calling for more resources to
improve health in developing countries, and global pressures for accountability, draw greater
attention to research-informed policy-making. Key utilisation issues have been described for at
least twenty years, but the growing focus on health research systems creates additional dimensions.
The utilisation of health research in policy-making should contribute to policies that may eventually
lead to desired outcomes, including health gains. In this article, exploration of these issues is
combined with a review of various forms of policy-making. When this is linked to analysis of
different types of health research, it assists in building a comprehensive account of the diverse
meanings of research utilisation.
Previous studies report methods and conceptual frameworks that have been applied, if with varying
degrees of success, to record utilisation in policy-making. These studies reveal various examples of
research impact within a general picture of underutilisation.
Factors potentially enhancing utilisation can be identified by exploration of: priority setting;
activities of the health research system at the interface between research and policy-making; and
the role of the recipients, or 'receptors', of health research. An interfaces and receptors model
provides a framework for analysis.
Recommendations about possible methods for assessing health research utilisation follow
identification of the purposes of such assessments. Our conclusion is that research utilisation can
be better understood, and enhanced, by developing assessment methods informed by conceptual
analysis and review of previous studies
Testing Meson Portal Dark Sector Solutions to the MiniBooNE Anomaly at CCM
A solution to the MiniBooNE excess invoking rare three-body decays of the
charged pions and kaons to new states in the MeV mass scale was recently
proposed as a dark-sector explanation. This class of solution illuminates the
fact that, while the charged pions were focused in the target-mode run, their
decay products were isotropically suppressed in the beam-dump-mode run in which
no excess was observed. This suggests a new physics solution correlated to the
mesonic sector. We investigate an extended set of phenomenological models that
can explain the MiniBooNE excess as a dark sector solution, utilizing
long-lived particles that might be produced in the three-body decays of the
charged mesons and the two-body anomalous decays of the neutral mesons. Over a
broad set of interactions with the long-lived particles, we show that these
scenarios can be compatible with constraints from LSND, KARMEN, and MicroBooNE,
and evaluate the sensitivity of the ongoing and future data taken by the
Coherent CAPTAIN Mills experiment (CCM) to a potential discovery in this
