    The smelt Osmerus eperlanus in Scotland

    Smelt populations have been recorded since the 18th Century from at least 15 rivers in Scotland, but over the last Century the species has suffered a severe decline and has disappeared from all its former sites except the rivers Cree, Forth and Tay. These populations must now be regarded as having high conservation importance. There are probably several different reasons for this decline. In some rivers, such as the Clyde and the Stinchar, pollution in the lower reaches has prevented successful migration and reproduction. In other rivers, high weirs and barriers have completely cut off access to spawning grounds. In some estuaries and rivers, such as the Solway Firth, overfishing is believed to have been responsible for eliminating local stocks. A Species Action Plan for the smelt has been prepared and it is hoped that this will be the basis of a future conservation strategy for this species in Scotland

    Relative advantage, queue jumping, and welfare maximizing wealth distribution

    Suppose individuals get utilities from the total amount of wealth they hold and from their wealth relative to those immediately below them. This paper studies the distribution of wealth that maximizes an additive welfare function made up of these utilities. It interprets wealth distribution in a control theory framework to show that the welfare maximizing distribution may have unexpected properties. In some circumstances it requires that inequality be maximized at the poorest and richest ends of the distribution. In other circumstances it requires that all wealth be given to a single individual.     Reactive Quenching Of Od A (2)Σ(+) By H-2: Translational Energy Distributions For H- And D-Atom Product Channels

    The H- and D-atom products from collisional quenching of OD A (2)Sigma(+) by H-2 are characterized through Doppler spectroscopy using two-photon (2 S-2 \u3c-\u3c- 1 S-2) laser-induced fluorescence. Partial deuteration enables separation of the channel forming H + HOD products, which accounts for 75% of reactive quenching events, from the D + H2O product channel. The Doppler profiles, along with those reported previously for other isotopic variants, are transformed into product translational energy distributions using a robust fitting procedure based on discrete velocity basis functions. The product translational energy distribution for the H- atom channel is strongly peaked at low energy (below 0.5 eV) with a long tail extending to the energetic limit. By contrast, the D-atom channel exhibits a small peak at low translational energy with a distinctive secondary peak at higher translational energy (approximately 1.8 eV) before falling off to higher energy. In both cases, most of the available energy flows into internal excitation of the water products. Similar distributions are obtained upon reanalysis of D- and H- atom Doppler profiles, respectively, from reactive quenching of OH A (2)Sigma(+) by D-2. The sum of the translational energy distributions for H- and D- atom channels is remarkably similar to that obtained for OH A (2)Sigma(+) + H-2, where the two channels cannot be distinguished from one another. The product translational energy distributions from reactive quenching are compared with those obtained from a previous experiment performed at higher collision energy, quasiclassical trajectory calculations of the post-quenching dynamics, and a statistical model.     The smelt Osmerus eperlanus (Linnaeus 1758) (Plate 3A, p. 65), or sparling asit is called in Scotland (and in northern England), is a small to medium-sizedfish whose adult size varies greatly according to habitat. The normal range inlength is 10 to 20 cm but the fish can sometimes reach 30 cm. In general, fishfrom non-migratory freshwater populations are much smaller than those whichhave lived in the sea. The smelt occurs from southern Norway around thewestern coast of Europe (including the Baltic Sea) to north-west Spain. It livesin coastal waters and estuaries and migrates into large clean rivers to spawn inthe spring. The species is tolerant of wide salinity changes and there are severalnon-migratory purely freshwater populations in large freshwater lakes inFinland, Sweden and Norway. The sole British freshwater population of smelt,in Rostherne Mere in Cheshire, became extinct in the 1920s (Ellison & Chubb1968), probably due to eutrophication

    Multiscale modeling and evaluation of urban surface energy balance in the Phoenix metropolitan area

    AbstractPhysical mechanisms of incongruency between observations and Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model predictions are examined. Limitations of evaluation are constrained by (i) parameterizations of model physics, (ii) parameterizations of input data, (iii) model resolution, and (iv) flux observation resolution. Observations from a new 22.1-m flux tower situated within a residential neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona, are utilized to evaluate the ability of the urbanized WRF to resolve finescale surface energy balance (SEB) when using the urban classes derived from the 30-m-resolution National Land Cover Database. Modeled SEB response to a large seasonal variation of net radiation forcing was tested during synoptically quiescent periods of high pressure in winter 2011 and premonsoon summer 2012. Results are presented from simulations employing five nested domains down to 333-m horizontal resolution. A comparative analysis of model cases testing parameterization of physical processes was done using four configurations of urban parameterization for the bulk urban scheme versus three representations with the Urban Canopy Model (UCM) scheme, and also for two types of planetary boundary layer parameterization: the local Mellor–Yamada–Janjić scheme and the nonlocal Yonsei University scheme. Diurnal variation in SEB constituent fluxes is examined in relation to surface-layer stability and modeled diagnostic variables. Improvement is found when adapting UCM for Phoenix with reduced errors in the SEB components. Finer model resolution is seen to have insignificant (&lt;1 standard deviation) influence on mean absolute percent difference of 30-min diurnal mean SEB terms.</jats:p

    Improved determination of marine sedimentation rates using 230Thxs

    Measurements of excess 230Th (230Thxs) have proved to be a useful tool in constraining changes in sedimentation rate, and improving our understanding of the fluxes of other components into marine sediments. To obtain the initial activity of 230Thxs (230Thxs0) in sediment: the total measured 230Th must be corrected for the presence of 230Th associated with detrital minerals, for ingrowth from uranium-bearing authigenic phases and then also corrected for the decay of 230Thxs since deposition. We describe a number of improvements in the way these corrections are applied to obtain more accurate determinations of 230Thxs0. We present a new method for the determination of a local estimate for the detrital 238U/232Th activity ratio; suggest more appropriate values for the isotopic composition of authigenic uranium; and question the assumption of secular equilibrium in detrital material. We also present a new, freely-available MATLAB® script called ‘XSage’ that can calculate 230Thxs0, from user-supplied datasets of uranium and thorium isotope activities from sedimentary samples following the theoretical approach described. ‘XSage’ can determine variations in sedimentation rate between stratigraphic horizons of known age and thus produce high-resolution age models. Using a Monte Carlo approach, the program calculates uncertainties for these age models and on the durations of intervals between tie-points. An example of the application of the XSage program using a previously published record is provided

    Histopathological and molecular heterogeneity among individuals with dementia associated with Presenilin mutations

    BACKGROUND: Mutations in the presenilin (PSEN) genes are associated with early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD). Biochemical characterizations and comparisons have revealed that many PSEN mutations alter gamma-secretase activity to promote accumulation of toxic Abeta42 peptides. In this study, we compared the histopathologic and biochemical profiles of ten FAD cases expressing independent PSEN mutations and determined the degradation patterns of amyloid-beta precursor protein (AbetaPP), Notch, N-cadherin and Erb-B4 by gamma-secretase. In addition, the levels of Abeta40/42 peptides were quantified by ELISA. RESULTS: We observed a wide variation in type, number and distribution of amyloid deposits and neurofibrillary tangles. Four of the ten cases examined exhibited a substantial enrichment in the relative proportions of Abeta40 over Abeta42. The AbetaPP N-terminal and C-terminal fragments and Tau species, assessed by Western blots and scanning densitometry, also demonstrated a wide variation. The Notch-1 intracellular domain was negligible by Western blotting in seven PSEN cases. There was significant N-cadherin and Erb-B4 peptide heterogeneity among the different PSEN mutations. CONCLUSION: These observations imply that missense mutations in PSEN genes can alter a range of key gamma-secretase activities to produce an array of subtly different biochemical, neuropathological and clinical manifestations. Beyond the broad common features of dementia, plaques and tangles, the various PSEN mutations resulted in a wide heterogeneity and complexity and differed from sporadic AD.Fil: Maarouf, Chera L..     Hydra: A mixture modeling framework for subtyping pediatric cancer cohorts using multimodal gene expression signatures.

    Precision oncology has primarily relied on coding mutations as biomarkers of response to therapies. While transcriptome analysis can provide valuable information, incorporation into workflows has been difficult. For example, the relative rather than absolute gene expression level needs to be considered, requiring differential expression analysis across samples. However, expression programs related to the cell-of-origin and tumor microenvironment effects confound the search for cancer-specific expression changes. To address these challenges, we developed an unsupervised clustering approach for discovering differential pathway expression within cancer cohorts using gene expression measurements. The hydra approach uses a Dirichlet process mixture model to automatically detect multimodally distributed genes and expression signatures without the need for matched normal tissue. We demonstrate that the hydra approach is more sensitive than widely-used gene set enrichment approaches for detecting multimodal expression signatures. Application of the hydra analysis framework to small blue round cell tumors (including rhabdomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, neuroblastoma, Ewing sarcoma, and osteosarcoma) identified expression signatures associated with changes in the tumor microenvironment. The hydra approach also identified an association between ATRX deletions and elevated immune marker expression in high-risk neuroblastoma. Notably, hydra analysis of all small blue round cell tumors revealed similar subtypes, characterized by changes to infiltrating immune and stromal expression signatures
