A Dynamically Diluted Alignment Model Reveals the Impact of Cell Turnover on the Plasticity of Tissue Polarity Patterns

The polarisation of cells and tissues is fundamental for tissue morphogenesis during biological development and regeneration. A deeper understanding of biological polarity pattern formation can be gained from the consideration of pattern reorganisation in response to an opposing instructive cue, which we here consider by example of experimentally inducible body axis inversions in planarian flatworms. Our dynamically diluted alignment model represents three processes: entrainment of cell polarity by a global signal, local cell-cell coupling aligning polarity among neighbours and cell turnover inserting initially unpolarised cells. We show that a persistent global orienting signal determines the final mean polarity orientation in this stochastic model. Combining numerical and analytical approaches, we find that neighbour coupling retards polarity pattern reorganisation, whereas cell turnover accelerates it. We derive a formula for an effective neighbour coupling strength integrating both effects and find that the time of polarity reorganisation depends linearly on this effective parameter and no abrupt transitions are observed. This allows to determine neighbour coupling strengths from experimental observations. The health knowledge mechanism: evidence on the link between education and health lifestyle in the Philippines

Studies have found substantial differences in health-related behavior and health care usage between educational groups, which may explain part of the well-documented educational gradient in health. The allocative efficiency hypothesis offers a behavioral explanation for these reported differences. According to this theory, the educated possess more health knowledge and information, allowing them to make better health choices. We perform a mediation analysis to study this mechanism using original survey data from the Philippines, a lower-middle-income country. As an extension of previous empirical research, we construct a comprehensive index that captures different dimensions of health knowledge. Using generalized propensity scores, we find strong support for the allocative efficiency argument. Schooling is significantly associated with health knowledge levels, which explain up to 69% of the education effect on health lifestyle. This corresponds to twice the mediation strength of economic resources, suggesting an important role of this factor in explaining education effects on health decisions

Ziele und Möglichkeiten regionaler Arbeitsmarktforschung im IAB

"Die zunehmende Bedeutung regionaler Arbeitsmarktforschung verlangt eine größere Transparenz in den regionalbezogenen Forschungsvorhaben der damit befassten Institutionen. Der Aufsatz, der als Rahmenprogramm der Regionalforschung im IAB gedacht ist, soll helfen, diese Transparenz zu erhöhen. Die Bundesanstalt für Arbeit hat nach dem AFG die Aufgabe, einen hohen Beschäftigungsstand zu erzielen und aufrechtzuerhalten und die Beschäftigungsstruktur nach Gebieten zu verbessern. Sie muss also ihre Mittel, soweit möglich, regional gezielt einsetzen. Der Entscheidungsspielraum ist dabei teilweise begrenzt durch die regionalpolitischen Zielsetzungen der Gebietskörperschaften. Innerhalb dieses Rahmens kann sie jedoch eine Regionalverteilung ihres Mitteleinsatzes anstreben, die im Hinblick auf ihre Aufgaben die größtmögliche Wirkung verspricht. Das IAB versucht, der Bundesanstalt zur Lösung dieser Probleme Entscheidungshilfen bereitzustellen. Zu diesem Zwecke müssen einmal Kriterien entwickelt werden, die den arbeitsmarktrelevanten Gegebenheiten und Entwicklungstendenzen in den einzelnen Regionen Rechnung tragen. Zweitens sind Standardmethoden zur Erfolgskontrolle der einzelnen Maßnahmen zu entwickeln. Zur Erfüllung dieser Aufgaben muss eine regional gegliederte Informationssammlung aufgebaut werden, durch die es möglich wird, Lage und Entwicklung von Wirtschaft und Arbeitsmarkt in den einzelnen Regionen zu diagnostizieren und vorauszuschätzen. Schon vom Umfang der erforderlichen Datensammlung her wird es kurzfristig noch nicht möglich sein, eine umfassende regionalpolitische Orientierungshilfe zu liefern. How Privacy Concerns and Social Media Platform Use Affect Online Political Participation in Germany

Digital inequalities research has investigated who engages in online political participation, finding gaps along socioeconomic variables such as gender and education. Recent research has also highlighted how online platforms may facilitate political participation. Especially for multi-purpose platforms such as Facebook, where users are supposed to use their real names, issues of adequate self-presentation arise. The diversity of multiple audiences engenders privacy concerns, particularly when controversial political issues are discussed. We add to existing research on digital inequalities by focusing on privacy concerns as a critical construct. Using a survey of German Internet users, we test the effect of privacy concerns on online political participation. Unexpectedly, privacy concerns increase political participation. As privacy concerns are spread evenly throughout the population, they contribute little to the socioeconomic stratification of online political participation. Social media use, however, exerts a strong positive effect on political participation, and differs significantly among socioeconomic groups

The influence of insulation of walls of industrial objects on thermal regime at the heating system of gas infrared radiators

The results of a numerical study of the process of heat transfer from the gas infrared emitters in the heated accommodation are represented. Simulation was conducted taking into account the heat withdrawal in the enclosing constructions and of heat exchange with the environment. Worum geht es in der Diskussion? Anhand welcher Maßstäbe bewertete der Wissenschaftsrat die Institute? Welche Rolle sollte der Wirtschaftstheorie, der empirischen Wirtschaftsforschung und der Statistik für die Politikberatung zukommen? --

IT Executives’ Perception of CobiT: Satisfaction, Business-IT Alignment and Benefits

Business-IT alignment has been one of the top issues in IT managers’ minds for years. Because of its potential to help an organization improve its Business-IT alignment, IT governance has grown in popularity over the last years. However, little research exists on the topic. An international survey of 113 firms using CobiT was conducted to examine the users’ satisfaction, impact on Business-IT alignment and perception on the benefits realized. The research concentrates on the evolution of these three factors as companies increase their implementation of CobiT. Results indicate that companies that have achieved higher implementation levels were more satisfied with the framework, experienced high positive impacts on their Business-IT alignment and received greater benefits in the areas of IT governance

The privacy implications of social robots: Scoping review and expert interviews

In this contribution, we investigate the privacy implications of social robots as an emerging mobile technology. Drawing on a scoping literature review and expert interviews, we show how social robots come with privacy implications that go beyond those of established mobile technology. Social robots challenge not only users’ informational privacy but also affect their physical, psychological, and social privacy due to their autonomy and potential for social bonding. These distinctive privacy challenges require study from varied theoretical perspectives, with contextual privacy and human–machine communication emerging as particularly fruitful lenses. Findings also point to an increasing focus on technological privacy solutions, complementing an evolving legal landscape as well as a strengthening of user agency and literacy

Die Auswirkungen differentieller Ermüdungskonzepte (Synergisten, Agonisten, Antagonisten) der unteren Extremitäten auf Parameter der sportlichen Leistung und der intermuskulären Koordination

Der heutige Leistungssport wird durch finanzielle und kommerzielle Interessen zu immer höheren Leistungen und neuen Rekorden getrieben. Aktuelle und bewährte Trainingmethoden sowie auch die Weiterentwicklung von speziellen Trainings- und Sportgeräten zeichnen erste Grenzen für die weitere Leistungsentwicklung auf. Um diesem Konflikt zu entgehen und dem steigenden Leistungsdruck gerecht zu werden, überwinden einige Sportler die natürlichen Schranken durch illegale Mittel, wie z.B. Pharmakamissbrauch. Das dieses Mittel nicht die Ausnahme ist bzw. war, verdeutlicht das aktuelle Geschehen. Deutschland als große Sportnation, die sich aktiv dem Kampf für einen „sauberen Sport“ verschrieben hat, muss große Erfolgseinbußen in vielen Sportarten hinnehmen. Selbstverständlich haben dabei auch Versäumnisse in der Sichtung und Förderung junger Talente ihren Anteil. Höchstleistungen scheinen in der heutigen Zeit nur noch am Rande der Legalität möglich zu sind. Der Hochleistungssport im Rahmen international abgestimmter Regeln, stellt damit an die Sportwissenschaft besondere Anforderungen. Dies sind z.B.: • die Erarbeitung und Überprüfung von Hypothesen und Modellen sportlicher Leistungen, • die Erarbeitung von Trainingshypothesen, Trainingsmodellen und –systemen • die Erarbeitung und Überprüfung von Trainingskonzeptionen in unmittelbarer Zusammenarbeit mit der Trainingspraxis (SCHNABEL / HARRE / BORDE 1997), • Auswertung und sportartspezifische Aufbereitung von Erkenntnissen der so genannten Basiswissenschaften Die Trainingswissenschaft konzentrierte sich in Verbindung mit anderen sportwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen in den vergangen Jahren gewinnbringend auf die Schaffung komplexer, sportartspezifischer Mess- und Trainingsgeräte. Seit einiger Zeit besteht auch ein verstärktes Interesse an differenziellen Trainingskonzepten mit disziplinspezifischen Programmen (THORHAUER / CARL / TÜRCK-NOACK 2001)
