Influencia de la adición de estaño en el proceso de precipitación en una aleación de Cu-Ni-Zn
ABSTRACT: Influence of tin additions on the precipitation processes in a Cu-Ni-Zn alloys. The influence of
1.1 wt% tin additions on the precipitation hardening of Cu-11 wt% Ni-20 wt% Zn alloy was studied by
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), microhardeness measurements and High Resolution Transmission
Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The calorimetric curves, in the range of temperatures analyzed, show the presence
of two exothermic reactions in the ternary alloy, associated to the short-range-order development assisted
by migration of excess vacancies. On the other hand, one exothermic and one endothermic reaction are observed
in the quaternary alloy, associated to the formation and dissolution of Cu2NiZn precipitates, respectively. It has
been show that an addition of 1.1% tin plays an important role in the formation of Cu2NiZn precipitates,
responsible for the precipitation hardening of the ternary alloy.Peer Reviewe

Optimization of the catalytic layer for alkaline fuel cells based on fumatech membranes and ionomer
Polymer electrolyte fuel cells with alkaline anion exchange membranes (AAEMs) have gained increasing attention because of the faster reaction kinetics associated with the alkaline environment compared to acidic media. While the development of anion exchange polymer membranes is increasing, the catalytic layer structure and composition of electrodes is of paramount importance to maximize fuel cell performance. In this work, we examine the preparation procedures for electrodes by catalyst-coated substrate to be used with a well-known commercial AAEM, Fumasep® FAA-3, and a commercial ionomer of the same nature (Fumion), both from Fumatech GmbH. The anion exchange procedure, the ionomer concentration in the catalytic layer and also the effect of membrane thickness, are investigated as they are very relevant parameters conditioning the cell behavior. The best power density was achieved upon ion exchange of the ionomer by submerging the electrodes in KCl (isopropyl alcohol/water solution) for at least one hour, two exchange steps, followed by treatment in KOH for 30 min. The optimum ionomer (Fumion) concentration was found to be close to 50 wt%, with a relatively narrow interval of functioning ionomer percentages. These results provide a practical guide for electrode preparation in AAEM-based fuel cell research
Time series irreversibility: a visibility graph approach
We propose a method to measure real-valued time series irreversibility which
combines two differ- ent tools: the horizontal visibility algorithm and the
Kullback-Leibler divergence. This method maps a time series to a directed
network according to a geometric criterion. The degree of irreversibility of
the series is then estimated by the Kullback-Leibler divergence (i.e. the
distinguishability) between the in and out degree distributions of the
associated graph. The method is computationally effi- cient, does not require
any ad hoc symbolization process, and naturally takes into account multiple
scales. We find that the method correctly distinguishes between reversible and
irreversible station- ary time series, including analytical and numerical
studies of its performance for: (i) reversible stochastic processes
(uncorrelated and Gaussian linearly correlated), (ii) irreversible stochastic
pro- cesses (a discrete flashing ratchet in an asymmetric potential), (iii)
reversible (conservative) and irreversible (dissipative) chaotic maps, and (iv)
dissipative chaotic maps in the presence of noise. Two alternative graph
functionals, the degree and the degree-degree distributions, can be used as the
Kullback-Leibler divergence argument. The former is simpler and more intuitive
and can be used as a benchmark, but in the case of an irreversible process with
null net current, the degree-degree distribution has to be considered to
identifiy the irreversible nature of the series.Comment: submitted for publicatio
Loss of heterozygosity at 9q32-33 (DBC1 locus) in primary non-invasive papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential and low-grade urothelial carcinoma of the bladder and their associated normal urothelium.
Tumour recurrence has a major impact on patients with non-invasive papillary urothelial
tumours of the bladder. To explore the role of DBC1 (deleted in bladder cancer 1 locus),
a candidate tumour suppressor gene located at 9q32–33, as prognostic marker we have
performed loss of heterozygosity (LOH) testing in 49 patients with primary papillary
urothelial tumours and associated normal urothelium. Data from the 38 tumours and
11 specimens of normal urothelium that were informative in the LOH study (D9S195
marker) showed that LOH in urothelium (45.4%) but not in non-invasive tumours (60.5%)
was associated with tumour recurrence (p = 0.026) but not to grade or progression. Also,
tumours whose normal urothelium had LOH were larger (p = 0.020) and showed cyclin
D1 over-expression (p = 0.032). Non-significant increased expression of p53, p21Waf1,
apoptotic index and tumour proliferation, and decreased expression of p27Kip1 or cyclin
D3 also characterized tumours whose normal urothelium had LOH. The expression of these
G1 –S modulators, apoptotic index and tumour proliferation was more heterogeneous in
papillary urothelial tumours, irrespective of having retained heterozygosity or LOH. Also,
Bax expression decreased in papillary urothelial tumours having LOH (p = 0.0473), but
Bcl-2 was unrelated to LOH status. In addition, FGFR3 protein expression decreased in
LOH tumours (p = 0.036) and in those having LOH in their normal urothelium (p = 0.022).
FGFR3 immunohistochemical expression was validated by western blot in selected cases. The
survival analysis selected LOH in normal urothelium as a marker of disease-free survival
(log-rank 5.32, p = 0.021), progression-free survival (log-rank 3.97, p = 0.046) and overall
survival (log-rank 4.26, p = 0.038); LOH in tumours was significant in progression-free
survival (log-rank 3.83, p = 0.042). It is concluded that LOH at the DBC1 locus in normal
urothelium seems to be relevant in the prognosis of non-invasive papillary tumours of the
bladder via selecting cases with increased proliferation, frequent alterations of the G1 –S
phase modulators, and decreased FGFR3 protein expression
Evaluation of intraocular pressure and other biomechanical parameters to distinguish between subclinical keratoconus and healthy corneas
Purpose: To assess the main corneal response differences between normal and subclinical keratoconus (SCKC) with a Corvis® ST device. (2) Material and Methods: We selected 183 eyes of normal patients, of a mean age of 33 ± 9 years and 16 eyes of patients with SCKC of a similar mean age. We measured best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and corneal topography with a Pentacam HD device to select the SCKC group. Biomechanical measurements were performed using the Corvis® ST device. We carried out a non-parametric analysis of the data with SPSS software (Wilcoxon signed rank-test). (3) Results: We found statistically significant differences between the control and SCKC groups in some corneal biomechanical parameters: first and second applanation time (p = 0.05 and p = 0.02), maximum deformation amplitude (p = 0.016), highest concavity radius (p = 0.007), and second applanation length and corneal velocity ((p = 0.039 and p = 0.016). (4) Conclusions: Our results show that the use of normalised biomechanical parameters provided by noncontact tonometry, combined with a discriminant function theory, is a useful tool for detecting subclinical keratoconus
CE–MS-based urinary biomarkers to distinguish non-significant from significant prostate cancer
BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer progresses slowly when present in low risk forms but can be lethal when it progresses to metastatic disease. A non-invasive test that can detect significant prostate cancer is needed to guide patient management. METHODS: Capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry has been employed to identify urinary peptides that may accurately detect significant prostate cancer. Urine samples from 823 patients with PSA (<15 ng/ml) were collected prior to biopsy. A case–control comparison was performed in a training set of 543 patients (nSig = 98; nnon-Sig = 445) and a validation set of 280 patients (nSig = 48, nnon-Sig = 232). Totally, 19 significant peptides were subsequently combined by a support vector machine algorithm. RESULTS: Independent validation of the 19-biomarker model in 280 patients resulted in a 90% sensitivity and 59% specificity, with an AUC of 0.81, outperforming PSA (AUC = 0.58) and the ERSPC-3/4 risk calculator (AUC = 0.69) in the validation set. CONCLUSIONS: This multi-parametric model holds promise to improve the current diagnosis of significant prostate cancer. This test as a guide to biopsy could help to decrease the number of biopsies and guide intervention. Nevertheless, further prospective validation in an external clinical cohort is required to assess the exact performance characteristics
Primeros datos del magmatismo pérmico medio-superior del SE de la Cordillera Ibérica: caracterización y comparación con magmatismos contemporáneos del Tethys occidental
A multiple basic to intermediate sill is reported for the first time in the south-eastern Iberian Ranges. It is composed of several tabular to irregular levels intercalated within the fluvial sediments of the Alcotas Formation (Middle-Upper Permian). The sill could represent the youngest Paleozoic subvolcanic intrusion in the Iberian Ranges. The igneous rocks are classified as basaltic andesites. They show a subophitic microstructure constituted by plagioclase (An62 – An6), augite (En48Wo44Fs7 –En46Wo39Fs15), pseudomorphosed olivine, minor amounts of oxides (magnetite and ilmenite) and accessory F-apatite. According to the mineralogy and whole-rock composition, their geochemical affinity is transitional from subalkaline to alkaline. Radiometric dating of the sill is not feasible due to its significant alteration. Field criteria, however, suggest an emplacement coeval to the deposition of the Alcotas Formation (Middle-Upper Permian). This hypothesis is supported by the transitional affinity of these rocks, similar to other Middle-Upper Permian magmatisms in the western Tethys, e.g., from the Pyrenees. Taking into account their isotopic signature (εSr: -6.8 to -9.2; εNd: +1.7 to +8.3), an enriched mantle source with the involvement of a HIMU component has been identified. This interpretation is supported by the trace element contents. Some of these HIMU characteristics have been recognised in the Middle-Upper Permian magmatisms of the Central Pyrenees (Anayet Basin) and the High Atlas (Argana Basin). However, none of these source features are shared with other Middle-Upper Permian magmatisms of the western Tethys (Catalonian Coastal Ranges, Corsica-Sardinia and southern France), nor with the Lower Permian magmatism of the Iberian Ranges. These differences support the presence of a heterogeneous mantle in the western Tethys during the Permian.Se describe por primera vez en el sudeste de la Cordillera Ibérica un sill múltiple de carácter básico a intermedio. Está compuesto por varios cuerpos tabulares a irregulares intercalados entre los sedimentos de origen fluvial de la Formación Alcotas (Pérmico Medio-Superior). El sill podría representar la intrusión subvolcánica paleozoica más reciente en la Cordillera Ibérica. Estas rocas subvolcánicas se clasifican como andesitas basálticas. Muestran una textura subofítica constituida por plagioclasa (An62 – An6), augita (En48Wo44Fs7 –En46Wo39Fs15), pseudomorfos de olivino, minerales opacos (magnetita e ilmenita) y F-apatito accesorio. De acuerdo con su composición mineral y de roca total, su afinidad geoquímica es transicional entre subalcalina y alcalina. La datación radiométrica del sill no es posible debido a su elevado grado de alteración. No obstante, los criterios de campo sugieren un emplazamiento contemporáneo con el depósito de la Formación Alcotas (Pérmico Medio-Superior). Esta hipótesis está apoyada por la afinidad transicional de estas rocas, similar a otros episodios magmáticos del Pérmico Medio-Superior en el Tethys occidental, como los que afloran en los Pirineos. Teniendo en cuenta su signatura isotópica (εSr: -6.8 a -9.2; εNd: +1.7 a +8.3), se propone un origen a partir de un manto enriquecido, con la participación de un componente de tipo HIMU. Esta interpretación está apoyada por sus contenidos en elementos traza. Algunas de estas características del protolito han sido reconocidas en los magmatismos del Pérmico Medio-Superior del Pirineo (cuenca del Anayet) y del Alto Atlas (cuenca de Argana), pero no son habituales en otros magmatismos de edad Pérmico Medio-Superior del Tethys occidental (Cadenas Costero Catalanas, Córcega-Cerdeña y Sur de Francia), ni en el magmatismo Pérmico Inferior de la Cordillera Ibérica. Estas diferencias apoyan la presencia de un manto heterogéneo en el Tethys occidental durante el Pérmico
Unleashing the Diagnostic, Prognostic and Therapeutic Potential of the Neuronostatin/GPR107 System in Prostate Cancer
Certain components of the somatostatin-system play relevant roles in Prostate Cancer (PCa), whose most aggressive phenotype (Castration-Resistant-PCa (CRPC)) remains lethal nowadays. However, neuronostatin and the G protein-coupled receptor 107 (GPR107), two novel members of the somatostatin-system, have not been explored yet in PCa. Consequently, we investigated the pathophysiological role of NST/GPR107-system in PCa. GPR107 expression was analyzed in well-characterized PCa patient′s cohorts, and functional/mechanistic assays were performed in response to GPR107-silencing and NST-treatment in PCa cells (androgen-dependent (AD: LNCaP) and androgen-independent (AI: 22Rv1/PC-3), which are cell models of hormone-sensitive and CRPC, respectively), and normal prostate cells (RWPE-1 cell-line). GPR107 was overexpressed in PCa and associated with key clinical parameters (e.g., advance stage of PCa, presence of vascular invasion and metastasis). Furthermore, GPR107-silencing inhibited proliferation/migration rates in AI-PCa-cells and altered key genes and oncogenic signaling-pathways involved in PCa aggressiveness (i.e., KI67/CDKN2D/MMP9/PRPF40A, SST5TMD4/AR-v7/In1-ghrelin/EZH2 splicing-variants and AKT-signaling). Interestingly, NST treatment inhibited proliferation/migration only in AI-PCa cells and evoked an identical molecular response than GPR107-silencing. Finally, NST decreased GPR107 expression exclusively in AI-PCa-cells, suggesting that part of the specific antitumor effects of NST could be mediated through a GPR107-downregulation. Altogether, NST/GPR107-system could represent a valuable diagnostic and prognostic tool and a promising novel therapeutic target for PCa and CRPC
