Peptide toxins from Conus geographus venom

    Get PDF
Journal ArticleThe biochemical characterization of three highly toxic peptides from the venom of the marine snail Conus geographus is described in this report. These peptides cause their potent activity by inhibition of the postsynaptic terminus of the vertebrate neuromuscular junction. The relatively small size of the peptides (13-15 amino acids) as well as the polymorphism in their structure makes them potentially attractive probes for synaptic transmission events

Flipped classroom based on objective structured clinical examinations analysis by undergraduate students of Pharmacology course from the Podiatry Degree improve their learning and assessment communication skills about medicines

Comunicación cartel con defensa oralWe aim to evaluate the impact of the individual and in-group analysis of OSCEs (filmed by other students) looking for correct and incorrect behaviours and contents in their learning of pharmacology. Summary of work and outcomes: A 5-year prospective study in which students of Pharmacology course from the Podiatry Degree analysed filmed OSCEs individually and in a group in a flipped classroom. Each group (max 5 students) analysed along 1 week a filmed OSCE, prepare a summary of correct and incorrect items related to clinical events, medicines uses, and people behaviours. The students presented their analysis results to the rest of the class. After each presentation, the other students of the class were encouraged to ask questions and after that, the students voluntarily answered a satisfaction survey. Result and Discussion: 405 students, 65.2% female, 20±5.3 years old were included. Students spend 13.4±5.4 h on making the filmed-OSCE analysis. The percentage of students satisfied with this way of studying pharmacology was 96.5%. OSCEs analysis by students increased their percentage of success in the final assessment in both OSCEs-related and OSCEs-non-related questions (+18.5% and +10.1%). Conclusion: Filmed Objective Structured Clinical Examinations analysis by undergraduate students on the Pharmacology course of Podiatry Degree improved their knowledge about medicines use and their communication skills during the assessment. Solar drying of fruits and vegetables is being used worldwide and particularly in Argentina. Although there are numerous designs of different complexity, they present some problems that require attention and study, especially when natural convection driers are used. This paper describes building aspects of a “tendalero” adapted for working as a passive solar drier with an incorporated solar chimney. The system essentially consists of a solar collector, a drying unit and a chimney. The simulation model used was SIMUSOL. A thermal analysis of the system is done and the results of adjustment simulation are considered. The results of the assays carried out, pepper for paprika and quince, are also shown. The simulation allowed to determine the mass flow rate of air inside the drier, and proved to be an important tool for design. The quality of dried products is good and the drying time is considered reasonable for this type of driers.Fil: Iriarte, Adolfo Antonio. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Evaluation of the efficiency potential of intermediate band solar cells based on thin-film chalcopyrite materials

This paper discusses the potential of the intermediate band solar cell _IBSC_ concept to improve the efficiency of thin-film chalcopyrite solar cells. The results show that solar cells based on CuGaS2, with a radiative limiting efficiency of 46.7%, exhibit the highest potential. A simple method for the identification of transition elements that when incorporated in CuGaS2 could possibly introduce an intermediate band is also described. The IBSC concept is also applied under the assumptions that thin-film solar cells are not to be operated under concentrated light and that a non-negligible contribution of nonradiative recombination exists

Fe-Containing MOFs as Seeds for the Preparation of Highly Active Fe/Al-SBA-15 Catalysts in the N-Alkylation of Aniline

We have successfully incorporated iron species into mesoporous aluminosilicates (AlSBA15) using a simple mechanochemical milling method. The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen physisorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), pyridine (PY) and 2,6-dimethylpyridine (DMPY) pulse chromatography titration, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The catalysts were tested in the N-alkylation reaction of aniline with benzyl alcohol for imine production. According to the results, the iron sources, acidity of catalyst and reaction conditions were important factors influencing the reaction. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance, achieving 97% of aniline conversion and 96% of imine selectivity under optimized conditions
