Dangerous dietary supplements: Garcinia cambogia-associated hepatic failure requiring transplantation.
Commercial dietary supplements are marketed as a panacea for the morbidly obese seeking sustainable weight-loss. Unfortunately, many claims cited by supplements are unsupported and inadequately regulated. Most concerning, however, are the associated harmful side effects, often unrecognized by consumers. Garcinia cambogia extract and Garcinia cambogia containing products are some of the most popular dietary supplements currently marketed for weight loss. Here, we report the first known case of fulminant hepatic failure associated with this dietary supplement. One active ingredient in this supplement is hydroxycitric acid, an active ingredient also found in weight-loss supplements banned by the Food and Drug Administration in 2009 for hepatotoxicity. Heightened awareness of the dangers of dietary supplements such as Garcinia cambogia is imperative to prevent hepatoxicity and potential fulminant hepatic failure in additional patients
Innate Pathways of Immune Activation in Transplantation
Studies of the immune mechanisms of allograft rejection have predominantly focused on the adaptive immune system that includes T cells and B cells. Recent investigations into the innate immune system, which recognizes foreign antigens through more evolutionarily primitive pathways, have demonstrated a critical role of the innate immune system in the regulation of the adaptive immune system. Innate immunity has been extensively studied in its role as the host's first-line defense against microbial pathogens; however, it is becoming increasingly recognized for its ability to also recognize host-derived molecules that result from tissue damage. The capacity of endogenous damage signals acting through the innate immune system to lower immune thresholds and promote immune recognition and rejection of transplant grafts is only beginning to be appreciated. An improved understanding of these pathways may reveal novel therapeutic targets to decrease graft alloreactivity and increase graft longevity
Do slower life history strategies reduce sociodemographic sex differences?
This study examines the relations between sociodemographic sex differences and life history strategies in the populations of Mexican States. Sex differences in anatomy and behavior was measured with traits such as educational achievement, mortality, and morbidity. The data were obtained from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) and sampled from thirty-one Mexican states and the Federal District (N = 32). An extension analysis was performed selecting only the sex ratio variables that had a correlation with the slow Life History factor greater than or equal to an absolute value of .25. A unit-weighted sex ratio factor was created using these variables. Across 32 Mexican states, the correlation between latent slow life history and sex ratio was .57 (p .05). These results are consistent with our hypothesis that slower life histories favor reduced sexual dimorphism in physiology and behavior among human subnational populations. The results of the study further understanding of variations in population sex differences, male-biased behaviors toward sexual equality, and the differences among subnational (regional) populations within the United States of Mexico.

The OSIRIS-REx Visible and InfraRed Spectrometer (OVIRS): Spectral Maps of the Asteroid Bennu
The OSIRIS-REx Visible and Infrared Spectrometer (OVIRS) is a point
spectrometer covering the spectral range of 0.4 to 4.3 microns (25,000-2300
cm-1). Its primary purpose is to map the surface composition of the asteroid
Bennu, the target asteroid of the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission.
The information it returns will help guide the selection of the sample site. It
will also provide global context for the sample and high spatial resolution
spectra that can be related to spatially unresolved terrestrial observations of
asteroids. It is a compact, low-mass (17.8 kg), power efficient (8.8 W
average), and robust instrument with the sensitivity needed to detect a 5%
spectral absorption feature on a very dark surface (3% reflectance) in the
inner solar system (0.89-1.35 AU). It, in combination with the other
instruments on the OSIRIS-REx Mission, will provide an unprecedented view of an
asteroid's surface.Comment: 14 figures, 3 tables, Space Science Reviews, submitte
Extrasolar Planet Transits Observed at Kitt Peak National Observatory
We obtained J-, H- and JH-band photometry of known extrasolar planet
transiting systems at the 2.1-m Kitt Peak National Observatory Telescope using
the FLAMINGOS infrared camera between October 2008 and October 2011. From the
derived lightcurves we have extracted the mid-transit times, transit depths and
transit durations for these events. The precise mid-transit times obtained help
improve the orbital periods and also constrain transit-time variations of the
systems. For most cases the published system parameters successfully accounted
for our observed lightcurves, but in some instances we derive improved
planetary radii and orbital periods. We complemented our 2.1-m infrared
observations using CCD z'-band and B-band photometry (plus two Hydrogen Alpha
filter observations) obtained with the Kitt Peak Visitor's Center telescope,
and with four H-band transits observed in October 2007 with the NSO's 1.6-m
McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope. The principal highlights of our results are: 1)
our ensemble of J-band planetary radii agree with optical radii, with the
best-fit relation being: (Rp/R*)J = 0.0017 + 0.979 (Rp/R*)optical, 2) We
observe star spot crossings during the transit of WASP-11/HAT-P-10, 3) we
detect star spot crossings by HAT-P-11b (Kepler-3b), thus confirming that the
magnetic evolution of the stellar active regions can be monitored even after
the Kepler mission has ended, and 4) we confirm a grazing transit for
HAT-P-27/WASP-40. In total we present 57 individual transits of 32 known
exoplanet systems.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Publications of the Astronomical

The Infrared Sensor Suite for SnowEx 2017
SnowEx is a winter airborne and field campaign designed to measure snow-water equivalent in forested landscapes. A major focus of Year 1 (2016-17) of NASA's SnowEx campaign will be an extensive field program involving dozens of participants from U.S. government agencies and from many universities and institutions, both domestic and foreign. Along with other instruments, two infrared (IR) sensors will be flown on a Naval Research Laboratory P-3 aircraft. Surface temperature is a critical input to hydrologic models and will be measured during the SnowEx mission. A Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector (QWIP) IR imaging camera system will be flown along with a KT-15 remote thermometer to aid in the calibration of the IR image data. Together, these instruments will measure surface temperature of snow and ice targets to an expected accuracy of less than 1C
Authorship Trends in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research: A Bibliometric Analysis
Publications are an important tool to measure one's success and achievement in academia. They can help propel a career forward and move one into a position of leadership. The overall purpose of this study was to investigate changes in bibliometric variables, authorship, and collaboration trends in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research (JOR®), since its inception in 1983. A bibliometric analysis was completed for all manuscripts meeting the inclusion criteria (638), which were published throughout the inaugural year plus one representative year of each decade. Several parameters were investigated including numbers of manuscripts, authors, collaborating institutions/countries, references, pages, and citations; region of origin and gender of authors over time and by region were main focuses. Significant increases over time were observed in all bibliometric variables analyzed except in the number of pages and citations. There was an approximate 27 percentage point increase for both female first and corresponding authors from 1983 to 2015. While this is most likely due to the increase in the number of women that have entered the field over time, similar increases in the percentage of women holding positions on the JOR editorial board or in leadership positions within in the field may have also contributed to improvements in gender parity. Understanding changes in publishing characteristics over time, by region, and by gender are critical, especially with the rising demands of publishing in academia. JOR has seen increase in most variables analyzed, including improvements in authorship by women in the field of orthopaedic research

Experimental and statistical investigation of thermally induced failure in reactor fuel particles
An incomplete experimental study into the failure statistics of fuel particle for the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) is described. Fuel particles failure was induced by thermal ramping from room temperature to temperatures in the vicinity of 2273/sup 0/K to 2773/sup 0/K in 2 to 30 h and detected by the appearance of /sup 85/Kr in the helium carrier gas used to sweep the furnace. The concentration of krypton, a beta emitter, was detected by measuring the current that resulted when the helium sweep gas was passed through an ionization chamber. TRISO fuel particles gave a krypton concentration profile as a function of time that built up in several minutes and decayed in a fraction of an hour. This profile, which was temperature independent, was similar to the impulse response of the ionization chamber, suggesting that the TRISO particles failed instantaneously and completely. BISO fuel particles gave a krypton concentration profile as a function of time that built up in a fraction of an hour and decayed in a fraction of a day. This profile was strongly temperature dependent, suggesting that krypton release was diffusion controlled, i.e., that the krypton was diffusing through a sound coat, or that the BISO coating failed but that the krypton was unable to escape the kernel without diffusion, or that a combination of pre- and postfailure diffusion accompanied partial or complete failure
