Characterization of the Hamamatsu R11410-10 3-Inch Photomultiplier Tube for Liquid Xenon Dark Matter Direct Detection Experiments
To satisfy the requirements of the next generation of dark matter detectors
based on the dual phase TPC, Hamamatsu, in close collaboration with UCLA, has
developed the R11410-10 photomultipler tube. In this work, we present the
detailed tests performed on this device. High QE (>30%) accompanied by a low
dark count rate (50 Hz at 0.3 PE) and high gain (10^7) with good single PE
resolution have been observed. A comprehensive screening measurement campaign
is ongoing while the manufacturer quotes a radioactivity of 20 mBq/PMT. These
characteristics show the R11410-10 to be particularly suitable for the
forthcoming zero background liquid xenon detectors.Comment: 19 pages, 18 figure

High wintertime particulate matter pollution over an offshore island (Kinmen) off southeastern China: an overview
Both the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD), the two most rapidly developing areas in eastern China, have suffered from serious air pollution, and thus, numerous investigations were devoted to studying these problems. Other areas in eastern China have received less attention despite similar rapid development in
their industries and economy. In this study, we analyzed air‐quality data from Kinmen Island (24°27′26′′N, 118°19′36′′E) located off Fujian Province and between the two above‐mentioned deltas. Our results clearly show that the study area is experiencing serious air quality deterioration. Particularly, high levels of suspended particulate matter (PM) were observed during winter, when the northeasterly monsoon prevails. For example, concentrations of wintertime PM10 (particles ≤ 10 mm in diameter) frequently exceeded 100 mg/m3 in the last three years. In addition to the air‐quality data analysis, aerosol samples were collected between 22 November 2007 and 6 March 2008 and subjected to chemical analyses of various species. Our findings show that the three principal PM components include organic, mineral, and sulfate species with moderate to minor fractions of nitrate, sea salt, elemental carbon, and trace metal oxides. The high PM levels observed over the island may be partly attributed to the transport from a mixed‐type industrial area located ∼40 km northeast of Kinmen. Our study could partially fill the air quality data gap between the YRD and PRD regions, and highlight the alarming fact that air pollution has gradually expanded along eastern China’s coastal zone
Dimer coverings on the Sierpinski gasket with possible vacancies on the outmost vertices
We present the number of dimers on the Sierpinski gasket
at stage with dimension equal to two, three, four or five, where one of
the outmost vertices is not covered when the number of vertices is an
odd number. The entropy of absorption of diatomic molecules per site, defined
as , is calculated to be
exactly for . The numbers of dimers on the generalized
Sierpinski gasket with and are also obtained
exactly. Their entropies are equal to , , ,
respectively. The upper and lower bounds for the entropy are derived in terms
of the results at a certain stage for with . As the
difference between these bounds converges quickly to zero as the calculated
stage increases, the numerical value of with can be
evaluated with more than a hundred significant figures accurate.Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures and 1 tabl
Nuclear transparency and effective kaon-nucleon cross section from the A(e, e'K+) reaction
We have determined the transparency of the nuclear medium to kaons from
measurements on C, Cu, and Au targets.
The measurements were performed at the Jefferson Laboratory and span a range in
four-momentum-transfer squared Q=1.1 -- 3.0 GeV. The nuclear
transparency was defined as the ratio of measured kaon electroproduction cross
sections with respect to deuterium, (). We further
extracted the atomic number () dependence of the transparency as
parametrized by and, within a simple model assumption,
the in-medium effective kaon-nucleon cross sections. The effective cross
sections extracted from the electroproduction data are found to be smaller than
the free cross sections determined from kaon-nucleon scattering experiments,
and the parameter was found to be significantly larger than those
obtained from kaon-nucleus scattering. We have included similar comparisons
between pion- and proton-nucleon effective cross sections as determined from
electron scattering experiments, and pion-nucleus and proton-nucleus scattering
data.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
PacBio But Not Illumina Technology Can Achieve Fast, Accurate and Complete Closure of the High GC, Complex Burkholderia pseudomallei Two-Chromosome Genome
Although PacBio third-generation sequencers have improved the read lengths of genome sequencing which facilitates the assembly of complete genomes, no study has reported success in using PacBio data alone to completely sequence a two-chromosome bacterial genome from a single library in a single run. Previous studies using earlier versions of sequencing chemistries have at most been able to finish bacterial genomes containing only one chromosome with de novo assembly. In this study, we compared the robustness of PacBio RS II, using one SMRT cell and the latest P6-C4 chemistry, with Illumina HiSeq 1500 in sequencing the genome of Burkholderia pseudomallei, a bacterium which contains two large circular chromosomes, very high G+C content of 68–69%, highly repetitive regions and substantial genomic diversity, and represents one of the largest and most complex bacterial genomes sequenced, using a reference genome generated by hybrid assembly using PacBio and Illumina datasets with subsequent manual validation. Results showed that PacBio data with de novo assembly, but not Illumina, was able to completely sequence the B. pseudomallei genome without any gaps or mis-assemblies. The two large contigs of the PacBio assembly aligned unambiguously to the reference genome, sharing >99.9% nucleotide identities. Conversely, Illumina data assembled using three different assemblers resulted in fragmented assemblies (201–366 contigs), sharing only 92.2–100% and 92.0–100% nucleotide identities to chromosomes I and II reference sequences, respectively, with no indication that the B. pseudomallei genome consisted of two chromosomes with four copies of ribosomal operons. Among all assemblies, the PacBio assembly recovered the highest number of core and virulence proteins, and housekeeping genes based on whole-genome multilocus sequence typing (wgMLST). Most notably, assembly solely based on PacBio outperformed even hybrid assembly using both PacBio and Illumina datasets. Hybrid approach generated only 74 contigs, while the PacBio data alone with de novo assembly achieved complete closure of the two-chromosome B. pseudomallei genome without additional costly bench work and further sequencing. PacBio RS II using P6-C4 chemistry is highly robust and cost-effective and should be the platform of choice in sequencing bacterial genomes, particularly for those that are well-known to be difficult-to-sequence
Scaling study of the pion electroproduction cross sections and the pion form factor
The H()n cross section was measured for a range of
four-momentum transfer up to =3.91 GeV at values of the invariant
mass, , above the resonance region. The -dependence of the longitudinal
component is consistent with the -scaling prediction for hard exclusive
processes. This suggests that perturbative QCD concepts are applicable at
rather low values of . Pion form factor results, while consistent with the
-scaling prediction, are inconsistent in magnitude with perturbative QCD
calculations. The extraction of Generalized Parton Distributions from hard
exclusive processes assumes the dominance of the longitudinal term. However,
transverse contributions to the cross section are still significant at
=3.91 GeV.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Dark Matter Results from 100 Live Days of XENON100 Data
We present results from the direct search for dark matter with the XENON100
detector, installed underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of
INFN, Italy. XENON100 is a two-phase time projection chamber with a 62 kg
liquid xenon target. Interaction vertex reconstruction in three dimensions with
millimeter precision allows to select only the innermost 48 kg as ultra-low
background fiducial target. In 100.9 live days of data, acquired between
January and June 2010, no evidence for dark matter is found. Three candidate
events were observed in a pre-defined signal region with an expected background
of 1.8 +/- 0.6 events. This leads to the most stringent limit on dark matter
interactions today, excluding spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering
cross-sections above 7.0x10^-45 cm^2 for a WIMP mass of 50 GeV/c^2 at 90%
confidence level.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; matches accepted versio
Implications on Inelastic Dark Matter from 100 Live Days of XENON100 Data
The XENON100 experiment has recently completed a dark matter run with 100.9
live-days of data, taken from January to June 2010. Events in a 48kg fiducial
volume in the energy range between 8.4 and 44.6 keVnr have been analyzed. A
total of three events have been found in the predefined signal region,
compatible with the background prediction of (1.8 \pm 0.6) events. Based on
this analysis we present limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross section for inelastic
dark matter. With the present data we are able to rule out the explanation for
the observed DAMA/LIBRA modulation as being due to inelastic dark matter
scattering off iodine at a 90% confidence level.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
