    Neil3-dependent base excision repair regulates lipid metabolism and prevents atherosclerosis in Apoe-deficient mice

    Increasing evidence suggests that oxidative DNA damage accumulates in atherosclerosis. Recently, we showed that a genetic variant in the human DNA repair enzyme NEIL3 was associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction. Here, we explored the role of Neil3/NEIL3 in atherogenesis by both clinical and experimental approaches. Human carotid plaques revealed increased NEIL3 mRNA expression which significantly correlated with mRNA levels of the macrophage marker CD68. Apoe−/−Neil3−/− mice on high-fat diet showed accelerated plaque formation as compared to Apoe−/− mice, reflecting an atherogenic lipid profile, increased hepatic triglyceride levels and attenuated macrophage cholesterol efflux capacity. Apoe−/−Neil3−/− mice showed marked alterations in several pathways affecting hepatic lipid metabolism, but no genotypic alterations in genome integrity or genome-wide accumulation of oxidative DNA damage. These results suggest a novel role for the DNA glycosylase Neil3 in atherogenesis in balancing lipid metabolism and macrophage function, potentially independently of genome-wide canonical base excision repair of oxidative DNA damage

    Bionic bodies, posthuman violence and the disembodied criminal subject

    This article examines how the so-called disembodied criminal subject is given structure and form through the law of homicide and assault. By analysing how the body is materialised through the criminal law’s enactment of death and injury, this article suggests that the biological positioning of these harms of violence as uncontroversial, natural, and universal conditions of being ‘human’ cannot fully appreciate what makes violence wrongful for us, as embodied entities. Absent a theory of the body, and a consideration of corporeality, the criminal law risks marginalising, or altogether eliding, experiences of violence that do not align with its paradigmatic vision of what bodies can and must do when suffering its effects. Here I consider how the bionic body disrupts the criminal law’s understanding of human violence by being a body that is both organic and inorganic, and capable of experiencing and performing violence in unexpected ways. I propose that a criminal law that is more receptive to the changing, technologically mediated conditions of human existence would be one that takes the corporeal dimensions of violence more seriously and, as an extension of this, adopts an embodied, embedded, and relational understanding of human vulnerability to violence

    Studenters møte med en FoU-basert grunnskolelærerutdanning

    Styringsdokumenter for grunnskolelærerutdanning på masternivå legger vekt på utvikling av studentenes profesjonelle FoU-kompetanse. I denne studien, som inngår i et større prosjekt om profesjonell lærerkompetanse, stiller vi spørsmål om hvordan grunnskolelærerstudenter tidlig i utdanningen forstår FoU-dimensjonen i utdanningen, og hvilken betydning FoU har for dem som studenter og framtidige lærere. Studien viser at studentene forstår FoU-begrepet som teori, forskning og forskningsmetoder, men at utdanningen ikke ser ut til å vektlegge U-en i FoU og heller ikke hjelper studentene til å koble F og U. Studentene gir uttrykk for selvbevissthet og et personlig engasjement for læreryrket, og artikkelen peker avslutningsvis på betydningen av kobling mellom studentenes gryende læreridentitet og FoU-aktiviteter i utdanningen
