The new drive system reduces the current consumption at 24 fps to 220 mA. The drive can be programmed and controlled externally from the multipurpose programmable timer/intervalometer, as well as being controlled locally from the camera

    A new method of detection and measurement of quantum vorticity by scattering second sound off quantized vortices in superfluid Helium is suggested. Theoretical calculations of the relative amplitude of the scattered second sound waves from a single quantum vortex, a vortex ring, and bulk vorticity are presented. The relevant estimates show that an experimental verification of the method is feasible. Moreover, it can even be used for the detection of a single quantum vortex.Comment: Latex file, 9 page

    Star-Like Micelles with Star-Like Interactions: A quantitative Evaluation of Structure Factor and Phase Diagram

    PEP-PEO block copolymer micelles offer the possibility to investigate phase behaviour and interactions of star polymers (ultra-soft colloids). A star-like architecture is achieved by an extremely asymmetric block ratio (1:20). Micellar functionality f can be smoothly varied by changing solvent composition (interfacial tension). Structure factors obtained by SANS can be quantitatively described in terms of an effective potential developed for star polymers. The experimental phase diagram reproduces to a high level of accuracy the predicted liquid/solid transition.     Boson Sampling from Gaussian States

    We pose a generalized Boson Sampling problem. Strong evidence exists that such a problem becomes intractable on a classical computer as a function of the number of Bosons. We describe a quantum optical processor that can solve this problem efficiently based on Gaussian input states, a linear optical network and non-adaptive photon counting measurements. All the elements required to build such a processor currently exist. The demonstration of such a device would provide the first empirical evidence that quantum computers can indeed outperform classical computers and could lead to applications

    A Protocol for Generating Random Elements with their Probabilities

    We give an AM protocol that allows the verifier to sample elements x from a probability distribution P, which is held by the prover. If the prover is honest, the verifier outputs (x, P(x)) with probability close to P(x). In case the prover is dishonest, one may hope for the following guarantee: if the verifier outputs (x, p), then the probability that the verifier outputs x is close to p. Simple examples show that this cannot be achieved. Instead, we show that the following weaker condition holds (in a well defined sense) on average: If (x, p) is output, then p is an upper bound on the probability that x is output. Our protocol yields a new transformation to turn interactive proofs where the verifier uses private random coins into proofs with public coins. The verifier has better running time compared to the well-known Goldwasser-Sipser transformation (STOC, 1986). For constant-round protocols, we only lose an arbitrarily small constant in soundness and completeness, while our public-coin verifier calls the private-coin verifier only once

    Scattering of first and second sound waves by quantum vorticity in superfluid Helium

    We study the scattering of first and second sound waves by quantum vorticity in superfluid Helium using two-fluid hydrodynamics. The vorticity of the superfluid component and the sound interact because of the nonlinear character of these equations. Explicit expressions for the scattered pressure and temperature are worked out in a first Born approximation, and care is exercised in delimiting the range of validity of the assumptions needed for this approximation to hold. An incident second sound wave will partly convert into first sound, and an incident first sound wave will partly convert into second sound. General considerations show that most incident first sound converts into second sound, but not the other way around.     Prospective study of colorectal cancer risk and physical activity, diabetes, blood glucose and BMI: exploring the hyperinsulinaemia hypothesis

    A sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and a Westernized diet have been implicated in the aetiology of both colorectal cancer and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, leading to the hypothesis that hyperinsulinaemia may promote colorectal cancer. We prospectively examined the association between colorectal cancer risk and factors related to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia, including BMI, physical activity, diabetes mellitus, and blood glucose, in a cohort of 75 219 Norwegian men and women. Information on incident cases of colorectal cancer was made available from the Norwegian Cancer Registry. Reported P values are two-sided. During 12 years of follow up, 730 cases of colorectal cancer were registered. In men, but not in women, we found a negative association with leisure-time physical activity (P for trend = 0.002), with an age-adjusted RR for the highest versus the lowest category of activity of 0.54 (95% CI = 0.37–0.79). Women, but not men, with a history of diabetes were at increased risk of colorectal cancer (age-adjusted RR = 1.55; 95% CI = 1.04–2.31), as were women with non-fasting blood glucose ≥8.0 mmol l−1(age-adjusted RR = 1.98; 95% CI = 1.31–2.98) compared with glucose <8.0 mmol l−1. Overall, we found no association between BMI and risk of colorectal cancer. Additional adjustment including each of the main variables, marital status, and educational attainment did not materially change the results. We conclude that the inverse association between leisure-time physical activity and colorectal cancer in men, and the positive association between diabetes, blood glucose, and colorectal cancer in women, at least in part, support the hypothesis that insulin may act as a tumour promoter in colorectal carcinogenesis. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Effective slip boundary conditions for flows over nanoscale chemical heterogeneities

    We study slip boundary conditions for simple fluids at surfaces with nanoscale chemical heterogeneities. Using a perturbative approach, we examine the flow of a Newtonian fluid far from a surface described by a heterogeneous Navier slip boundary condition. In the far-field, we obtain expressions for an effective slip boundary condition in certain limiting cases. These expressions are compared to numerical solutions which show they work well when applied in the appropriate limits. The implications for experimental measurements and for the design of surfaces that exhibit large slip lengths are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

    Elastic forces that do no work and the dynamics of fast cracks

    Elastic singularities such as crack tips, when in motion through a medium that is itself vibrating, are subject to forces orthogonal to the direction of motion and thus impossible to determine by energy considerations alone.
