Constraints on Crustal Stress from Coseismic Slip Models and Focal Mechanisms.

Constraining crustal stress that leads to earthquakes is an active area of research with profound implications on understanding the forces that deform the surface of the earth and generate slip on faults. Surface deformation related to strain accumulation on faults prior to, during and following earthquakes are recorded geodetically (InSAR and GPS). These data are used to infer fault geometries and models of coseismic slip of an earthquake. Seismic energy radiated during earthquakes are used to produce focal mechanisms, which are geometric representations of faults, and provide insight on stress changes due to earthquakes. However, earthquakes are the response to stress accumulation on faults, but direct measurements of accumulated stress are difficult. In this dissertation, I develop, test, and apply a Bayesian Monte Carlo (BMC) estimation technique to infer crustal stress from both focal mechanisms and coseismic slip models, the latter of which has never been done prior to the work I present here. I apply the BMC method to investigate stresses leading to the 2008 Wenchuan, China, earthquake, and to the 1999 İzmit and Düzce, Turkey, earthquakes. I use various coseismic slip models from all three events, aftershock focal mechanisms of the Wenchuan earthquake, and seismicity recorded in the Sea of Marmara, adjacent to the İzmit earthquake. I find that a homogeneous stress is statistically consistent with slip during the Wenchuan earthquake, and that heterogeneous stresses along the trace of the mainshock, previously argued for based on aftershock focal mechanisms, may simply reflect ambiguities in the interpretation of stress from focal mechanisms. Coseismic slip models from the İzmit and Düzce earthquakes are also consistent with a homogeneous stress along all fault segments that slipped in those earthquakes, particularly if the coefficient of fault friction is about 0.2 or less. In the Sea of Marmara, inferred stresses from focal mechanisms indicate that stress differs from the eastern to the western segments of the Main Marmara fault. Additionally, results indicate a potential stress rotation along the western segment between about 1999 and 2003, towards a transform stress regime similar to the stress leading to the İzmit and Düzce earthquakes.PHDGeologyUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Touch therapy combined with talk therapy: The Rubenfeld Synergy Method

Touch therapy has been researched for many years and is accepted as a successful therapeutic method for healing. Ironically, touch has gone from being a part of mainstream medicine to becoming associated with alternative medicine. The Rubenfeld Synergy Method (RSM), one modality emphasizing touch, was created almost four decades ago and has been recently rediscovered due to the growth and evolution of alternative medicine. RSM combines gentle touch and talk therapy to treat patients. Currently, there is no direct research-based support for the benefits of this method. However, this is a vast quantity of data supporting the benefits of touch therapy in addition to the benefits of talk therapy. Consistent with this research, the author believes that the holistic approach presented by RSM can benefit the patient in many ways. It is important to understand the value of the interconnected, even inseparable, linkage of mind-body-spirit to completely assist a patient solve issues in his/her past and/or current life

Specific features for the competent binding of substrates at the FMN adenylyltransferase site of FAD synthase from corynebacterium ammoniagenes

Bifunctional FAD synthases (FADSs) catalyze FMN (flavin mononucleotide) and FAD (flavinadenine dinucleotide) biosynthesis at their C-riboflavin kinase (RFK) and N-FMN: adenylyltransferase (FMNAT) modules, respectively. Biophysical properties and requirements for their FMNAT activity differ among species. Here, we evaluate the relevance of the integrity of the binding site of the isoalloxazine of flavinic substrates for FMNAT catalysis in Corynebacterium ammoniagenes FADS (CaFADS). We have substituted P56 and P58, belonging to a conserved motif, as well as L98. These residues shape the isoalloxazine FMNAT site, although they are not expected to directly contact it. All substitutions override enzyme ability to transform substrates at the FMNAT site, although most variants are able to bind them. Spectroscopic properties and thermodynamic parameters for the binding of ligands indicate that mutations alter their interaction modes. Substitutions also modulate binding and kinetic properties at the RFK site, evidencing the crosstalk of different protomers within CaFADS assemblies during catalysis. In conclusion, despite the FMNAT site for the binding of substrates in CaFADS appearing as a wide open cavity, it is finely tuned to provide the competent binding conformation of substrates. In particular, P56, P58 and L98 shape the isoalloxazine site to place the FMN-and FAD-reacting phosphates in optimal geometry for catalysis

Insights into the fmnat active site of fad synthase: Aromaticity is essential for flavin binding and catalysis

The last step in the biosynthesis of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) is considered a target for the design of antimicrobial drugs because it is carried out by two non-homologous proteins in eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. Monofunctional FMN: adenylyltransferases (FMNAT) in Eukarya and FMNAT modules of bifunctional FAD synthases (FADS) in Prokarya belong to different structural families with dissimilar chemistry and binding modes for the substrates. In this study, we analyzed the relevance of the hydrophobic environment of the flavin isoalloxazine in the FMNAT active site of Corynebacterium ammoniagenes FADS (CaFADS) through the mutational analysis of its F62, Y106, and F128 residues. They form the isoalloxazine binding cavity and are highly conserved in the prokaryotic FADS family. The spectroscopic, steady-state kinetics and thermodynamic data presented indicate that distortion of aromaticity at the FMNAT isoalloxazine binding cavity prevents FMN and FAD from correct accommodation in their binding cavity and, as a consequence, decreases the efficiency of the FMNAT activity. Therefore, the side-chains of F62, Y106 and F128 are relevant in the formation of the catalytic competent complex during FMNAT catalysis in CaFADS. The introduced mutations also modulate the activity occurring at the riboflavin kinase (RFK) module of CaFADS, further evidencing the formation of quaternary assemblies during catalysis

[EN] The following work seeks to be a useful instrument for the creation of a solid, responsible and sustainable cultural tourism in Chile. For this task, the current image of national tourism is taken into consideration (where natural tourism stands out), the image of national and international projection given from the state tourist institutions to the tourist, the current parameters of tourist information collection in cultural spaces and dissemination at the educational level based on the protection of tourism products, and the importance given to intangible heritage. Through the analysis of these points, different alternatives that seek to give value to the Chilean cultural heritage are evaluated, mainly of an immaterial. The results obtained from this analysis show an advertising image detached from the national context, a deficient collection system at the time of analyzing the audiences, added to the little emphasis given to intangible heritage. The importance of the creation of a cultural tourism that gives importance to the interaction with the communities that yield their spaces to the use of the tourist and the benefits that this type of tourism can bring to the communities, the importance in the creation of a measurement of public in the cultural spaces that delivers effective information for the development of public, the putting in value of the food patrimony and, its procedural character for the establishment of this as a cultural asset and the implementation of a sustainable tourism that works with communities from the social pillars (multiculturalism, interaction, protection, respect, dialogue), economic (job creation, giving value to craft work) and environmental (respect for the cosmovision of peoples, protection of the environment as a germ of the product).Medina Sánchez, LR.
