RLE Plots: Visualising Unwanted Variation in High Dimensional Data
Unwanted variation can be highly problematic and so its detection is often
crucial. Relative log expression (RLE) plots are a powerful tool for
visualising such variation in high dimensional data. We provide a detailed
examination of these plots, with the aid of examples and simulation, explaining
what they are and what they can reveal. RLE plots are particularly useful for
assessing whether a procedure aimed at removing unwanted variation, i.e. a
normalisation procedure, has been successful. These plots, while originally
devised for gene expression data from microarrays, can also be used to reveal
unwanted variation in many other kinds of high dimensional data, where such

Thermo-mechanical compatibility of CFRP versus steel reinforcement for concrete at high temperature
Optimization of the design of concrete structures has become a driver for the use of nonconventional reinforcing materials. One example of this is the emerging use of non-corrosive, highstrength, and lightweight carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) prestressing tendons. It is widely known that the bond between FRP reinforcing tendons and concrete deteriorates at elevated temperature due to a combination of factors. Lateral thermal expansion of FRP reinforcing tendons at elevated temperature has been shown to have consequences for the bond performance of these systems. This paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out to assess the occurrence of heat-induced longitudinal splitting cracks in concrete specimens reinforced with CFRP or steel prestressing tendons. A novel testing methodology, namely a Heat-Transfer Rate Inducing System (H-TRIS), is used to subject specimens to thermal loading which replicates that experienced by equivalent specimens in a standard fire resistance test. A comparison between CFRP and steel tendons is made, and the occurrence of longitudinal splitting cracks is evaluated in terms of the time to occurrence and thermal gradient within the concrete. Performance and materials aspects of Ge:Be photoconductors
Ge:Be photoconductors were developed for low photon background applications in the 30 to 50 MM wavelength region. These detectors provide higher responsivity and lower noise equivalent power (NEP) than the Ge:Ga detectors currently operating in this wavelength range. Beryllium doped single crystals were grown by the Czochralski method from a carbon susceptor under a vacuum of approx. one million torr. An optimum detective quantum efficiency of 46% at a background flux of 1.5 x 10 to the 8th power photons/second (7 x 10 to the 13th power W) was reported. Ge:Be detector performance is strongly influenced by the absolute concentrations and the concentration ratio of residual shallow donors and shallow acceptors
02-01 "Economic Analysis in Environmental Reviews of Trade Agreements: Assessing the North American Experience"
Beginning in the late 1990s, Canada and the United States began requiring "Environmental Reviews (ERs)" of all trade agreements to be negotiated by each government. This paper, commissioned by the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation, outlines how ERs have evolved in North America, and evaluates the different methodological approaches that have been employed in ERs thus far. We show that the ERs conducted to date have an encouraging number of strengths that can be built upon. However, we also establish that the art of conducting ERs is still in its infancy. We identify four limitations with the methodological approaches that have been employed in the most recent ERs. Based on an analysis of these limitations, we propose four ways to improve how ERs are conducted in the future:
