Design/methodology/approach: A confirmatory empirical study was conducted based on social exchange theory and customer value theory. The survey responses from 298 firms were analysed using structural equation modelling and multi-group analysis to test for direct effects and moderation. Findings: Both dimensions of relationship-specific proactive improvement by LSPs (cost and performance) are strong drivers of all three customer loyalty dimensions and, thus, are important to customer relationship management and relevant areas to be considered within innovation management. The effect on customer loyalty is moderated by the dynamism of the customer’s market. Proactive cost improvements are more important under high dynamism, while proactive performance improvements, contrary to initial assumptions, are more important when dynamism is low. Research limitations/implications: Future studies should analyse other cultural settings, differentiate between functional and relationship value provided, consider other services, investigate how LSPs can facilitate proactive improvement and improve innovation management, and explore how customers can foster proactive improvement. Practical implications: The currently low level of proactive improvement should be increased if LSPs want to enhance customer loyalty. In doing so, LSPs ought to consider the dynamism of their customers’ markets. Originality/value: The paper is the first to provide a differentiated view on the role of relationship-specific proactive innovation that distinguishes between cost and performance improvements and illustrates their effects on three distinct customer loyalty dimensions

Modeling space-time correlations of velocity fluctuations in wind farms

An analytical model for the streamwise velocity space-time correlations in turbulent flows is derived and applied to the special case of velocity fluctuations in large wind farms. The model is based on the Kraichnan-Tennekes random sweeping hypothesis, capturing the decorrelation in time while including a mean wind velocity in the streamwise direction. In the resulting model, the streamwise velocity space-time correlation is expressed as a convolution of the pure space correlation with an analytical temporal decorrelation kernel. Hence, the spatio-temporal structure of velocity fluctuations in wind farms can be derived from the spatial correlations only. We then explore the applicability of the model to predict spatio-temporal correlations in turbulent flows in wind farms. Comparisons of the model with data from a large eddy simulation of flow in a large, spatially periodic wind farm are performed, where needed model parameters such as spatial and temporal integral scales and spatial correlations are determined from the large eddy simulation. Good agreement is obtained between the model and large eddy simulation data showing that spatial data may be used to model the full temporal structure of fluctuations in wind farms.Comment: Submitted to Wind Energ

Hypoxia is an underlying pathophysiological condition of a variety of devastating diseases, including acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We are faced with limited therapeutic options for AIS patients, and even after successful restoration of cerebral blood flow, the poststroke mortality is still high. More basic research is needed to explain mortality after reperfusion and to develop adjunct neuroprotective therapies. Drosophila melanogaster (D.m.) is a suitable model to analyze hypoxia; however, little is known about the impacts of hypoxia and especially of the subsequent reperfusion injury on the behavior and survival of D.m. To address this knowledge gap, we subjected two wild-type D.m. strains (Canton-S and Oregon-R) to severe hypoxia (<0.3%

Cropland Values Rise While Rangeland Values Fall

Preliminary findings from the 2010 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Nebraska Farm Real Estate Survey show cropland values rising across the entire state over the past 12 months. This follows on the heels of a year of little to no value change for most of the state. For the year ending February 1, 2010, dryland cropland with no irrigation potential rose an average of 6.4 percent, while state-wide averages for gravity irrigated cropland and center pivot irrigated cropland climbed 5.2 and 6.1 percent, respectively (Table 1 on next page). Statewide, dryland cropland with potential to be developed for irrigation rose 7.3 percent in value, but varied considerably across the state depending on development restrictions and opportunities. At the same time that cropland classes experienced value gains, the non-tillable grazing land class fell 5.6 percent for the year, with even greater percentage declines recorded in the major range areas of the state. The combination of upward value movement for cropland and downward pressure for rangeland led to an overall statewide increase for all land of 4.4 percent (Figure 1)
