Accurate Atmospheric Parameters at Moderate Resolution Using Spectral Indices: Preliminary Application to the MARVELS Survey
Studies of Galactic chemical and dynamical evolution in the solar
neighborhood depend on the availability of precise atmospheric parameters
(Teff, [Fe/H] and log g) for solar-type stars. Many large-scale spectroscopic
surveys operate at low to moderate spectral resolution for efficiency in
observing large samples, which makes the stellar characterization difficult due
to the high degree of blending of spectral features. While most surveys use
spectral synthesis, in this work we employ an alternative method based on
spectral indices to determine the atmospheric parameters of a sample of nearby
FGK dwarfs and subgiants observed by the MARVELS survey at moderate resolving
power (R~12,000). We have developed three codes to automatically normalize the
observed spectra, measure the equivalent widths of the indices and, through the
comparison of those with values calculated with pre-determined calibrations,
derive the atmospheric parameters of the stars. The calibrations were built
using a sample of 309 stars with precise stellar parameters obtained from the
analysis of high-resolution FEROS spectra. A validation test of the method was
conducted with a sample of 30 MARVELS targets that also have reliable
atmospheric parameters from high-resolution spectroscopic analysis. Our
approach was able to recover the parameters within 80 K for Teff, 0.05 dex for
[Fe/H] and 0.15 dex for log g, values that are lower or equal to the typical
external uncertainties found between different high-resolution analyzes. An
additional test was performed with a subsample of 138 stars from the ELODIE
stellar library and the literature atmospheric parameters were recovered within
125 K for Teff, 0.10 dex for [Fe/H] and 0.29 dex for log g. These results show
that the spectral indices are a competitive tool to characterize stars with the

The influence of sugarcane pre‐harvest fire on hantavirus prevalence in Neotropical small mammals
The use of pre-harvest fire in sugarcane fields surprisingly results in an increase
in the abundance of Neotropical Sigmodontinae rodents, which might carry
hantavirus. By contrast, fire suspension induces a decline in rodents in the first
5 years. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of sugarcane harvest
regimes on hantavirus prevalence in wild rodents. Field collections were carried
out on a sugarcane production area in Northeast S˜ao Paulo, which is responsible
for 30% of the ethanol production in Brazil. A few years after pre-harvest fire
suspension, a high prevalence of hantavirus was found in small rodents at lower
population density, but apparently higher population growth rate. Differences in
life cycle between the rodents and their predators may explain such density
patterns, as small rodents can breed twice or even three times each year, whereas
their predators usually breed only once a year. Similarly, the temporal dynamics
of the predator–prey relationship suggests that hantavirus prevalence is related to
small rodent’s population growth and not density. Only Akodon montensis,
Calomys tener, and Necromys lasiurus contained immunoglobulin G antibodiesagainst the recombinant nucleoprotein of Araraquara orthohantavirus, a genotype
of Andes orthohantavirus, with no interspecific variation in seroprevalence among
these species. However, males presented higher prevalence rate than females, possibly
due to a male-biased dispersal pattern and a higher frequency of antagonistic
interactions. Governance measures to mitigate the role of small wild rodents on
the emergence of hantavirus in agricultural landscapes dominated by sugarcane
plantations should include the use of wildlife-friendly management techniques
(e.g., to mitigate the mortality of the predators of small rodents), human capacity
building concerning wildlife-related conflicts, and multifunctionality of agricultural
landscapes. Future studies should prioritize the possible relationship between
microhabitat structure and hantavirus prevalence in small rodents in agricultural

Resumo: Experimentos em que são coletadas muitas medidas em cada unidade experimental têm matrizes de dados nas quais o número de colunas (variáveis) é muito maior que o de linhas (observações). Dados hiperespectrais são habitualmente coletados por instrumentos que medem instantaneamente as reflectâncias de um alvo em milhares de comprimentos de onda e podemos considerar que cada uma delas constitui uma variável prognóstica num modelo de regressão. A facilidade na obtenção de cada vez maior número de variáveis simultâneas não se repete na obtenção das observações dessas variáveis. A análise de componentes principais (ACP) é indicada para tratar tal quantidade de variáveis e reduzir a dimensionalidade dos dados, mas sua aplicação ainda exige a obtenção de um grande número de medidas. Já a análise discriminante é usada na tentativa de classificar diferentes alvos, mas precisa ser precedida da seleção de um pequeno subconjunto de bandas, geralmente escolhidas com base em informações preexistentes e não nos próprios dados. A regressão linear permite empregar o método stepwise para selecionar um subconjunto de bandas, mas só é indicada para variáveis dependentes quantitativas. O presente trabalho propõe o uso da regressão logística politômica stepwise para selecionar um pequeno conjunto de bandas espectrais que discrimine alvos em k classes, quando a variável resposta de interesse é nominal. Apresentamos um exemplo no qual os dados espectrais são utilizados para construção de modelos logísticos com um pequeno número de preditores (bandas) para classificação de folhas verdes em classes correspondentes a três culturas agrícolas: soja perene, milho e braquiária
Gold(I) and Silver(I) Complexes Containing Hybrid Sulfonamide/Thiourea Ligands as Potential Leishmanicidal Agents
Leishmaniasis is a group of parasitic diseases with the potential to infect more than 1 billion people; however, its treatment is still old and inadequate. In order to contribute to changing this view, this work consisted of the development of complexes derived from MI metal ions with thioureas, aiming to obtain potential leishmanicidal agents. The thiourea ligands (HLR) were obtained by reactions of p-toluenesulfohydrazide with R-isothiocyanates and were used in complexation reactions with AgI and AuI, leading to the formation of complexes of composition [M(HLR)2]X (M = Ag or Au; X = NO3− or Cl−). All compounds were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, UV-vis, emission spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Some representatives were additionally studied by ESI-MS and single-crystal XRD. Their properties were further analyzed by DFT calculations. Their cytotoxicity on Vero cells and the extracellular leishmanicidal activity on Leishmania infantum and Leishmania braziliensis cells were evaluated. Additionally, the interaction of the complexes with the Old Yellow enzyme of the L. braziliensis (LbOYE) was examined. The biological tests showed that some compounds present remarkable leishmanicidal activity, even higher than that of the standard drug Glucantime, with different selectivity for the two species of Leishmania. Finally, the interaction studies with LbOYE revealed that this enzyme could be one of their biological targets
A Cautionary Tale: MARVELS Brown Dwarf Candidate Reveals Itself To Be A Very Long Period, Highly Eccentric Spectroscopic Stellar Binary
We report the discovery of a highly eccentric, double-lined spectroscopic
binary star system (TYC 3010-1494-1), comprising two solar-type stars that we
had initially identified as a single star with a brown dwarf companion. At the
moderate resolving power of the MARVELS spectrograph and the spectrographs used
for subsequent radial-velocity (RV) measurements (R ~ <30,000), this particular
stellar binary mimics a single-lined binary with an RV signal that would be
induced by a brown dwarf companion (Msin(i)~50 M_Jup) to a solar-type primary.
At least three properties of this system allow it to masquerade as a single
star with a very low-mass companion: its large eccentricity (e~0.8), its
relatively long period (P~238 days), and the approximately perpendicular
orientation of the semi-major axis with respect to the line of sight (omega~189
degrees). As a result of these properties, for ~95% of the orbit the two sets
of stellar spectral lines are completely blended, and the RV measurements based
on centroiding on the apparently single-lined spectrum is very well fit by an
orbit solution indicative of a brown dwarf companion on a more circular orbit
(e~0.3). Only during the ~5% of the orbit near periastron passage does the
true, double-lined nature and large RV amplitude of ~15 km/s reveal itself. The
discovery of this binary system is an important lesson for RV surveys searching
for substellar companions; at a given resolution and observing cadence, a
survey will be susceptible to these kinds of astrophysical false positives for
a range of orbital parameters. Finally, for surveys like MARVELS that lack the
resolution for a useful line bisector analysis, it is imperative to monitor the
peak of the cross-correlation function for suspicious changes in width or
shape, so that such false positives can be flagged during the candidate vetting

Very Low Mass Stellar and Substellar Companions to Solar-Like Stars From MARVELS V: A Low Eccentricity Brown Dwarf from the Driest Part of the Desert, MARVELS-6b
We describe the discovery of a likely brown dwarf (BD) companion with a
minimum mass of 31.7 +/- 2.0 M_Jup to GSC 03546-01452 from the MARVELS radial
velocity survey, which we designate as MARVELS-6b. For reasonable priors, our
analysis gives a probability of 72% that MARVELS-6b has a mass below the
hydrogen-burning limit of 0.072 M_Sun, and thus it is a high-confidence BD
companion. It has a moderately long orbital period of 47.8929 +0.0063/-0.0062
days with a low eccentricty of 0.1442 +0.0078/-0.0073, and a semi-amplitude of
1644 +12/-13 m/s. Moderate resolution spectroscopy of the host star has
determined the following parameters: T_eff = 5598 +/- 63, log g = 4.44 +/-
0.17, and [Fe/H] = +0.40 +/- 0.09. Based upon these measurements, GSC
03546-01452 has a probable mass and radius of M_star = 1.11 +/- 0.11 M_Sun and
R_star = 1.06 +/- 0.23 R_Sun with an age consistent with less than ~6 Gyr at a
distance of 219 +/- 21 pc from the Sun. Although MARVELS-6b is not observed to
transit, we cannot definitively rule out a transiting configuration based on
our observations. There is a visual companion detected with Lucky Imaging at
7.7 arcsec from the host star, but our analysis shows that it is not bound to
this system. The minimum mass of MARVELS-6b exists at the minimum of the mass
functions for both stars and planets, making this a rare object even compared

Photometric redshifts and clustering of emission line galaxies selected jointly by DES and eBOSS
We present the results of the first test plates of the extended Baryon
Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. This paper focuses on the emission line
galaxies (ELG) population targetted from the Dark Energy Survey (DES)
photometry. We analyse the success rate, efficiency, redshift distribution, and
clustering properties of the targets. From the 9000 spectroscopic redshifts
targetted, 4600 have been selected from the DES photometry. The total success
rate for redshifts between 0.6 and 1.2 is 71\% and 68\% respectively for a
bright and faint, on average more distant, samples including redshifts measured
from a single strong emission line. We find a mean redshift of 0.8 and 0.87,
with 15 and 13\% of unknown redshifts respectively for the bright and faint
samples. In the redshift range 0.6<z<1.2, for the most secure spectroscopic
redshifts, the mean redshift for the bright and faint sample is 0.85 and 0.9
respectively. Star contamination is lower than 2\%. We measure a galaxy bias
averaged on scales of 1 and 10~Mpc/h of 1.72 \pm 0.1 for the bright sample and
of 1.78 \pm 0.12 for the faint sample. The error on the galaxy bias have been
obtained propagating the errors in the correlation function to the fitted
parameters. This redshift evolution for the galaxy bias is in agreement with
theoretical expectations for a galaxy population with MB-5\log h < -21.0. We
note that biasing is derived from the galaxy clustering relative to a model for
the mass fluctuations. We investigate the quality of the DES photometric
redshifts and find that the outlier fraction can be reduced using a comparison
between template fitting and neural network, or using a random forest
algorithm
