INNOVATIVE THERAPEUTIC CANCER VACCINES IN CUBA: AN UPDATE

Worldwide cancer affects more than 10 million new people each year while other 22 million are living with this devastating disease. Cancer vaccines are the newest weapon in the battle against this disease, specifically increasing body\u27s natural abilities to halt tumour progression. Currently, 141 distinct projects are at different stages of clinical development. The Cuban Biotech System of Institutions has been actively involved in this field for almost 20 years, resulting that 8 innovative therapeutic cancer vaccine projects are currently under clinical investigation. The main focus of these projects is to impact the principal cancer localizations afecting Cuban population, like NSCLC, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and cervical cancer. From the technical point of view a common feature of 6 out of the 8 projects is the use of Very Small Sized Proteoliposomes (VSSP) as a peculiar nanoparticulated proprietary adjuvant. This presentation will briefly describe the rationale of these cancer vaccines and will update about their clinical status, in the context of the Cuban vaccine development program

Oral Reading Fluency Can Be Estimated Across Languages with Text-To-Speech Software

Oral reading fluency (ORF) is a good index of the reading skill level, measured as the number of words read correctly per minute (WRPM). However, ORF tests are not available in many languages. This study tested if the mean of WRPM could be estimated in languages for which ORF tests have not been developed by using free text-to-speech software. Mean time taken by Google Translate (GT) to read out loud 10 texts in 16 languages from the International Reading Speed Texts was compared with the mean time taken by human participants. An English/Other languages ratio was obtained for both reading systems. Both ratios were highly similar, showing that GT is a valid tool to estimate mean WRPM in multiple languages

Managerialism and fiction, or the fiction of managerialism: From Ayn Rand to novels for executives

The aim of management books is to propagate new theories in the field among company executives. Such publications are one of the pillars of managerialism. Perhaps the oddest manifestation of the phenomenon is novels focussing on senior executives heroically battling for business excellence through the application of a managerial technique. In this paper, we put this curious, rarely-explored literary genre under the spotlight. We not only analyse the salient features of such literature and its main ingredients but also highlight the major stylistic influence of Ayn Rand's works. The novels of this influential neo-Liberal writer foreshadowed the new narrative form.Los libros sobre management tienen como objetivo propagar nuevas teorías de gestión entre los directivos y ejecutivos de las empresas, y representa uno de los pilares del gerencialismo. Una de sus manifestaciones más peculiares es la ficción, esto es, novelas que se centran en historias de profesionales de corporaciones en las que estos tratan de alcanzar la excelencia en los negocios mediante una técnica gerencial. Debt and sacrifice: the role of scapegoats in the economic crises

Despite the process of secularization and modernization, in contemporary societies, the role of sacrifice is still relevant. One of the spaces where sacrifice actually performs a critical role is the realm of modern economy, particularly in the event of a financial crisis. Such crises represent situations defined by an outrageous symbolic violence in which social and economic relations experience drastic transformations, and their victims end up suffering personal bankruptcy, indebt-edness, lower standards of living or poverty. Crises show the flagrant domination present in social relations: this is proven in the way crises evolve, when more and more social groups marred by a growing vulnerability are sacrificed to appease financial markets. Inspired by the theoretical framework of the French anthropologist René Girard, our intention is to explore how the hegemonic nar-rative about the crisis has been developed, highlighting its sacrificial aspects.This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, grant number PGC2018-097200-B-I00

Turismo y parques naturales en Andalucía tras veinte años desde su declaración. Análisis estadístico, tipología de parques y problemática de la situación actual

El artículo presenta dos objetivos fundamentales. Por una parte, analizar mediante los indicadores objetivos y mensurables existentes la evolución de la actividad turística en los parques naturales andaluces desde su declaración, hace ahora veinte años. Por otra, clarificar a partir de datos estadísticos los rasgos caracterizadores de la situación turística actual de dichos parques, mostrando sus principales problemas. Para todo ello se realiza una clasificación tipológica de los parques, y se parte del principio de que el aprovechamiento turístico de los mismos debe sustentarse, tanto por razones de sostenibilidad como de competitividad, en actividades estrechamente vinculadas a la singularidad de su capital natural.The article presents two main aims. On the one hand, to analyze by means of the objective and measurable existing indicators the evolution of the tourist activity in the andalusian nature parks from their declaration, now twenty years ago.On the other hand, to clarify from statistical information the features that characterize the tourist current situation of the above mentioned parks, showing their principal problems. For all this a classification by types of parks is made and the principle that the tourist utilization of the parks must be based, so much for reasons of sustainability as of competitiveness, in activities narrowly linked to the singularity of their natural capital is defended.L'article présente deux objectifs fondamentaux. D'une part, analyser au moyen des indicateurs objectifs et mesurables existants l'évolution de l'activité touristique dans les parcs naturels andaloux depuis sa déclaration, maintenant il y a vingt ans. Par l'autre, clarifier à partir des données statistiques les traits qui caractérisent la situation touristique actuelle des dits parcs, en montrant ses problèmes principaux. MutS regulates access of the error-prone DNA polymerase Pol IV to replication sites: a novel mechanism for maintaining replication fidelity

Translesion DNA polymerases (Pol) function in the bypass of template lesions to relieve stalled replication forks but also display potentially deleterious mutagenic phenotypes that contribute to antibiotic resistance in bacteria and lead to human disease. Effective activity of these enzymes requires association with ring-shaped processivity factors, which dictate their access to sites of DNA synthesis. Here, we show for the first time that the mismatch repair protein MutS plays a role in regulating access of the conserved Y-family Pol IV to replication sites. Our biochemical data reveals that MutS inhibits the interaction of Pol IV with the β clamp processivity factor by competing for binding to the ring. Moreover, the MutS–β clamp association is critical for controlling Pol IV mutagenic replication under normal growth conditions. Thus, our findings reveal important insights into a non-canonical function of MutS in the regulation of a replication activity.Fil: Margara, Lucía. Interplay between anchoring and wetting at a nematic-substrate interface

We use a generalized van der Waals molecular theory to study a model substrate-nematic interface in the regime of complete wetting and in a situation of competing interactions at the interface. The analysis shows that an anchoring transition between states with planar and homeotropic director configuration may play the role of a prewetting transition, and that reentrant anchoring must generally occur. Estudio de la infraestructura de medición avanzada(AMI), principales requerimientos y beneficios

This work investigated the AMI technology - Advanced Metering Infrastructure, its main components, requirements and benefits. This document is a proposal that allow the execution of feasibility studies of AMI technology projects that will be implemented in electricity distribution companies. Nowadays there is a growing emphasis on improving the energy markets efficiency, optimizing the supply’s security and the correct use of energy saving benefits. One of the electricity company’s problems is the lack of standards, as response, the CIM-Common Information Model" has been designed. The CIM offers a new perspective "object oriented" for distributed resources. Through this representation as "objects", the way that a resource is described is generic. What is characteristic for each resource is the value of the attributes that has. This model is described in the IEC 61970 and IEC 61968, which is explained in this project, mainly the Standard Interface for monitoring and meter reading (MR) IEC 61968-9. Furthermore, this paper argues that the tendency to implement standards such as IEC 61970/61968 involves the use of UML-Unified Modeling Language. In addition, the analysis performed provides an overview of new measurement technologies through the examination of international trends and various components of AMI systems. Then the impact of costs - benefits of the smart metering and distribution system will be study in order to determinate the economic risk. After, we will study the conditions in Europe, North America and Australia, and determinate how countries and regions have variances in their approaches and how these differences have had an impact on their policy. In fact, in our country there are many electricity power distribution companies that suffer losses in the electrical power delivered area, because of unaffected control component’s, the resulted: the total energy input which is purchased to the generators is different to the total energy charged to the customers.
