Calculations of heavy ion charge state distributions for nonequilibrium conditions

    Get PDF
Numerical calculations of the charge state distributions of test ions in a hot plasma under nonequilibrium conditions are presented. The mean ionic charges of heavy ions for finite residence times in an instantaneously heated plasma and for a non-Maxwellian electron distribution function are derived. The results are compared with measurements of the charge states of solar energetic particles, and it is found that neither of the two simple cases considered can explain the observations

The mean ionic charge of silicon in 3HE-rich solar flares

    Get PDF
Mean ionic charge of iron in 3He-rich solar flares and the average mean charge of Silicon for 23 #He-rich periods during the time interval from September 1978 to October 1979 were determined. It is indicated that the value of the mean charge state of Silicon is higher than the normal flare average by approximately 3 units and in perticular it is higher then the value predicted by resonant heating models for 3He-rich solar flares

    Simple Finite Non-Abelian Flavor Groups

The recently measured unexpected neutrino mixing patterns have caused a resurgence of interest in the study of finite flavor groups with two- and three-dimensional irreducible representations. This paper details the mathematics of the two finite simple groups with such representations, the Icosahedral group A_5, a subgroup of SO(3), and PSL_2(7), a subgroup of SU(3).Comment: 42 pages, matches published version, references adde

    Quintics with Finite Simple Symmetries

We construct all quintic invariants in five variables with simple Non-Abelian finite symmetry groups. These define Calabi-Yau three-folds which are left invariant by the action of A_5, A_6 or PSL_2(11).Comment: 18 pages, typos corrected, matches published versio

Statistical keyword detection in literary corpora

Understanding the complexity of human language requires an appropriate analysis of the statistical distribution of words in texts. We consider the information retrieval problem of detecting and ranking the relevant words of a text by means of statistical information referring to the "spatial" use of the words. Shannon's entropy of information is used as a tool for automatic keyword extraction. By using The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin as a representative text sample, we show the performance of our detector and compare it with another proposals in the literature. The random shuffled text receives special attention as a tool for calibrating the ranking indices.Comment: Published version. 11 pages, 7 figures. SVJour for LaTeX2

The mean ionic charges of N, Ne, MG, SI and S in solar energetic particle events

    Get PDF
The mean ionic charges of nitrogen, neon, magnesium, silicon, and sulfur in solar flare particle events were determined for 12 flares during the time interval from September 1978 to September 1979. The observations were carried out with the MPI/UoMd ULEZEQ Sensor on the ISEE-3 satellite comparing the results with mean charge states established in a hot coronal plasma under equilibrium conditions, different temperatures for different elements are discussed. These range from approx. 2 million K to 7 million K in a single flare. From flare to flare the variation in temperature for each element is less than the variation between different ion species

Modeling an ontology on accessible evacuation routes for emergencies

    Get PDF
Providing alert communication in emergency situations is vital to reduce the number of victims. However, this is a challenging goal for researchers and professionals due to the diverse pool of prospective users, e.g. people with disabilities as well as other vulnerable groups. Moreover, in the event of an emergency situation, many people could become vulnerable because of exceptional circumstances such as stress, an unknown environment or even visual impairment (e.g. fire causing smoke). Within this scope, a crucial activity is to notify affected people about safe places and available evacuation routes. In order to address this need, we propose to extend an ontology, called SEMA4A (Simple EMergency Alert 4 [for] All), developed in a previous work for managing knowledge about accessibility guidelines, emergency situations and communication technologies. In this paper, we introduce a semi-automatic technique for knowledge acquisition and modeling on accessible evacuation routes. We introduce a use case to show applications of the ontology and conclude with an evaluation involving several experts in evacuation procedures. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Geometrical CP violation in multi-Higgs models

We introduce several methods to obtain calculable phases with geometrical values that are independent of arbitrary parameters in the scalar potential. These phases depend on the number of scalars and on the order of the discrete non-Abelian group considered. Using these methods we present new geometrical CP violation candidates with vacuum expectation values that must violate CP (the transformation that would make them CP conserving is not a symmetry of the potential). We also extend to non-renormalisable potentials the proof that more than two scalars are needed to obtain these geometrical CP violation candidates.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. v2: table added, accepted by JHE

Retired A Stars and Their Companions VIII: 15 New Planetary Signals Around Subgiants and Transit Parameters for California Planet Search Planets with Subgiant Hosts

    Get PDF
We present the discovery of seven new planets and eight planet candidates around subgiant stars, as additions to the known sample of planets around "retired A stars." Among these are the possible first three-planet systems around subgiant stars, HD 163607 and HD 4917. Additionally, we present calculations of possible transit times, durations, depths, and probabilities for all known planets around subgiant (3 9%

Non-Abelian Discrete Flavor Symmetries on Orbifolds

We study non-Abelian flavor symmetries on orbifolds, S1/Z2S^1/Z_2 and T2/Z3T^2/Z_3. Our extra dimensional models realize DND_N, Σ(2N2)\Sigma(2N^2), Δ(3N2)\Delta(3N^2) and Δ(6N2)\Delta(6N^2) including A4A_4 and S4S_4. In addition, one can also realize their subgroups such as QNQ_N, T7T_7, etc. The S3S_3 flavor symmetry can be realized on both S1/Z2S^1/Z_2 and T2/Z3T^2/Z_3 orbifolds.Comment: 16 page
