Entanglement of mechanical oscillators coupled to a non-equilibrium environment
Recent experiments aim at cooling nanomechanical resonators to the ground
state by coupling them to non-equilibrium environments in order to observe
quantum effects such as entanglement. This raises the general question of how
such environments affect entanglement. Here we show that there is an optimal
dissipation strength for which the entanglement between two coupled oscillators
is maximized. Our results are established with the help of a general framework
of exact quantum Langevin equations valid for arbitrary bath spectra, in and
out of equilibrium. We point out why the commonly employed Lindblad approach
fails to give even a qualitatively correct picture
Public Relations Work to Increase Attainability Relating to EMail-Communication
The mere allotment of an e-mail address does in no way ensure answering quotas, which could be called sufficient to dependably hand out important information via roundmail. A loss of accessibility through e-mail addresses already provided by the university can be due to various technical problems and personal deficiencies of motivation. Students in particular often use external providers and are often also not on familiar terms with the use of consistent personal e-mail archives, POP-accounts, Web-Mail-Portals and the use of forewarding functions. Special email-courses are being offered within regular further training for staff and students
Transport properties of quantum dots in the Wigner molecule regime
The transport properties of quantum dots with up to N=7 electrons ranging
from the weak to the strong interacting regime are investigated via the
projected Hartree-Fock technique. As interactions increase radial order
develops in the dot, with the formation of ring and centered-ring structures.
Subsequently, angular correlations appear, signalling the formation of a Wigner
molecule state. We show striking signatures of the emergence of Wigner
molecules, detected in transport. In the linear regime, conductance is
exponentially suppressed as the interaction strength grows. A further
suppression is observed when centered-ring structures develop, or peculiar spin
textures appear. In the nonlinear regime, the formation of molecular states may
even lead to a conductance enhancement.Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication on New Journal of

Numerical Results For The 2D Random Bond 3-state Potts Model
We present results of a numerical simulation of the 3-state Potts model with
random bond, in two dimension. In particular, we measure the critical exponent
associated to the magnetization and the specific heat. We also compare these
exponents with recent analytical computations.Comment: 9 pages, latex, 3 Postscript figure
MetaboLab - advanced NMR data processing and analysis for metabolomics
Background\ud
Despite wide-spread use of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in metabolomics for the analysis of biological samples there is a lack of graphically driven, publicly available software to process large one and two-dimensional NMR data sets for statistical analysis.\ud
\ud
Results\ud
Here we present MetaboLab, a MATLAB based software package that facilitates NMR data processing by providing automated algorithms for processing series of spectra in a reproducible fashion. A graphical user interface provides easy access to all steps of data processing via a script builder to generate MATLAB scripts, providing an option to alter code manually. The analysis of two-dimensional spectra (1H,13C-HSQC spectra) is facilitated by the use of a spectral library derived from publicly available databases which can be extended readily. The software allows to display specific metabolites in small regions of interest where signals can be picked. To facilitate the analysis of series of two-dimensional spectra, different spectra can be overlaid and assignments can be transferred between spectra. The software includes mechanisms to account for overlapping signals by highlighting neighboring and ambiguous assignments.\ud
\ud
Conclusions\ud
The MetaboLab software is an integrated software package for NMR data processing and analysis, closely linked to the previously developed NMRLab software. It includes tools for batch processing and gives access to a wealth of algorithms available in the MATLAB framework. Algorithms within MetaboLab help to optimize the flow of metabolomics data preparation for statistical analysis. The combination of an intuitive graphical user interface along with advanced data processing algorithms facilitates the use of MetaboLab in a broader metabolomics context.\ud
