Enabling Temporal-Aware Contexts for Adaptative Distributed Systems

    Get PDF
Distributed adaptive systems are composed of federated entities offering remote inspection and reconfiguration abilities. This is often realized using a MAPE-K loop, which constantly evaluates system and environmental parameters and derives corrective actions if necessary. The OpenStack Watcher project uses such a loop to implement resource optimization services for multi-tenant clouds. To ensure a timely reaction in the event of failures, the MAPE-K loop is executed with a high frequency. A major drawback of such reactivity is that many actions, e.g., the migration of containers in the cloud, take more time to be effective and their effects to be measurable than the MAPE-k loop execution frequency. Unfinished actions as well as their expected effects over time are not taken into consideration in MAPE-K loop processes, leading upcoming analysis phases potentially take sub-optimal actions. In this paper, we propose an extended context representation for MAPE-K loop that integrates the history of planned actions as well as their expected effects over time into the context representations. This information can then be used during the upcoming analysis and planning phases to compare measured and expected context metrics. We demonstrate on a cloud elasticity manager case study that such temporal action-aware context leads to improved reasoners while still be highly scalable

International audienceSchizophrenia affects 1% of the population. It greatly alters the quality of life of patients and their autonomy. In this study, we evaluated the effect of a psychoeducation program (PEP) in 17 patients. The effectiveness of the program was measured with validated psychometric questionnaires assessing functional remission, quality of life, adherence to drug treatments and satisfaction. The results revealed a significant effect of PEP on functional remission and adherence to treatment, but no effect on the overall quality of life score. Self-esteem and autonomy were improved. No patient presented evidence for a major depressive episode after PEP. Patients were generally very satisfied of the program. In conclusion, PEP has a beneficial effect on coping strategies of patients with schizophrenia. Awareness of the deleterious effects of the disease at the family, social, emotional and somatic levels allows patients to be challenged with active involvement in care. Building self-esteem ("I'm not crazy, I have an illness") helps patients to be more easily engaged with caregivers.Integrating PEP into the overall care of the patient as a pivotal care (drug treatment, psychosocial rehabilitation, family therapy) is very beneficial. A regular assessment with reinforcement of the knowledge and requests of the patient will be able to improve the overall quality of life score.

KevoreeJS: Enabling dynamic software reconfigurations in the Browser

International audienceThe architecture of classic productivity software are moving from a traditional desktop-based software to a client server architecture hosted in the Cloud. In this context, web browsers behave as application containers that allow users to access a variety of Cloud-based applications and services, such as IDEs, Word processors, Music Collection Managers, etc. As a result, a significant part of these software run in the browser and accesses remote services. A lesson learned from development framework used in distributed applications is the success of pluggable architecture pattern as a core architecture concept, i.e., a Software Architecture that promotes the use of Pluggable Module to dynamically plug. Following this trend, this paper discusses the main challenges to create a component-based platform supporting the development of dynamically adaptable single web page applications. This paper also presents an approach called KevoreeJS based on models@runtime to control browser as component platform which address some of these challenges. We validate this work by presenting the design of a dashboard for sensor based system and highlighting the capacity of KevoreeJS to dynamically choose the placement of code on the server or client side and how KevoreeJS can be used to dynamically install or remove running components

Out of the Pacific and Back Again: Insights into the Matrilineal History of Pacific Killer Whale Ecotypes

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) are the most widely distributed marine mammals and have radiated to occupy a range of ecological niches. Disparate sympatric types are found in the North Atlantic, Antarctic and North Pacific oceans, however, little is known about the underlying mechanisms driving divergence. Previous phylogeographic analysis using complete mitogenomes yielded a bifurcating tree of clades corresponding to described ecotypes. However, there was low support at two nodes at which two Pacific and two Atlantic clades diverged. Here we apply further phylogenetic and coalescent analyses to partitioned mitochondrial genome sequences to better resolve the pattern of past radiations in this species. Our phylogenetic reconstructions indicate that in the North Pacific, sympatry between the maternal lineages that make up each ecotype arises from secondary contact. Both the phylogenetic reconstructions and a clinal decrease in diversity suggest a North Pacific to North Atlantic founding event, and the later return of killer whales to the North Pacific. Therefore, ecological divergence could have occurred during the allopatric phase through drift or selection and/or may have either commenced or have been consolidated upon secondary contact due to resource competition. The estimated timing of bidirectional migration between the North Pacific and North Atlantic coincided with the previous inter-glacial when the leakage of fauna from the Indo-Pacific into the Atlantic via the Agulhas current was particularly vigorous

Mitogenomic phylogenetic analyses of the Delphinidae with an emphasis on the Globicephalinae

BACKGROUND: Previous DNA-based phylogenetic studies of the Delphinidae family suggest it has undergone rapid diversification, as characterised by unresolved and poorly supported taxonomic relationships (polytomies) for some of the species within this group. Using an increased amount of sequence data we test between alternative hypotheses of soft polytomies caused by rapid speciation, slow evolutionary rate and/or insufficient sequence data, and hard polytomies caused by simultaneous speciation within this family. Combining the mitogenome sequences of five new and 12 previously published species within the Delphinidae, we used Bayesian and maximum-likelihood methods to estimate the phylogeny from partitioned and unpartitioned mitogenome sequences. Further ad hoc tests were then conducted to estimate the support for alternative topologies. RESULTS: We found high support for all the relationships within our reconstructed phylogenies, and topologies were consistent between the Bayesian and maximum-likelihood trees inferred from partitioned and unpartitioned data. Resolved relationships included the placement of the killer whale (Orcinus orca) as sister taxon to the rest of the Globicephalinae subfamily, placement of the Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) within the Globicephalinae subfamily, removal of the white-beaked dolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) from the Delphininae subfamily and the placement of the rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) as sister taxon to the rest of the Delphininae subfamily rather than within the Globicephalinae subfamily. The additional testing of alternative topologies allowed us to reject all other putative relationships, with the exception that we were unable to reject the hypothesis that the relationship between L. albirostris and the Globicephalinae and Delphininae subfamilies was polytomic. CONCLUSION: Despite their rapid diversification, the increased sequence data yielded by mitogenomes enables the resolution of a strongly supported, bifurcating phylogeny, and a chronology of the divergences within the Delphinidae family. This highlights the benefits and potential application of large mitogenome datasets to resolve long-standing phylogenetic uncertainties

The evaluation of residual life of materials is linked with the development of non destructive evaluation techniques. For that purpose, we have studied Barkhausen noise (B.N.) associated to a martensite (ferromagnetic) in various austenitic steels subjected to low cycle fatigue. The different behaviours of the studied steels reveal that, with suitable measurement conditions, the technique is very sensitive to low martensite contents (few %). The device has been fitted to a push-pull fatigue machine in order to perform in situ measurements, at different points of a fatigue loop = f( ). These tests evidence that B.N. is sensitive to internal stresses inside martensite. The evaluation of these stresses by the Eshelby method supports this interpretation. Then, taking into account internal stresses effect allows us to explain the coherence of all the obtained results.VILLEURBANNE-DOC'INSA LYON (692662301) / SudocSudocFranceF

M2d2: A formal data model for ids alert correlation

    No full text
Abstract. At present, alert correlation techniques do not make full use of the information that is available. We propose a data model for IDS alert correlation called M2D2. It supplies four information types: information related to the characteristics of the monitored information system, information about the vulnerabilities, information about the security tools used for the monitoring, and information about the events observed. M2D2 is formally defined. As far as we know, no other formal model includes the vulnerability and alert parts of M2D2. Three examples of correlations are given. They are rigorously specified using the formal definition of M2D2. As opposed to already published correlation methods, these examples use more than the events generated by security tools; they make use of many concepts formalized in M2D2.
