The employment value of an undergraduate degree in theatre arts in the U.S.

    Get PDF
During lean times, administrators must make hard decisions about which programs stay and which must go. Arts departments are particularly vulnerable when traditionally derived enrollment and employability factors are used to determine where to implement cuts. While only a minority of Theatre Arts graduates will find work as artists, most do find employment in a variety of fields. Because current labor statistics fail to capture the complexity of the employment patterns of these graduates, Theatre Arts departments are vulnerable to downsizing. This study investigated the employment patterns of theatre graduates in the United States, the skills applied to current employment, and their perceptions of the value of their theatre arts degree. Findings from a survey of 487 participants provided a new map of the employment patterns of Theatre Arts graduates, identifying how and where graduates found employment and whether the skills acquired with a Theatre Arts degree contributed to a perception of value for dollars spent.Includes bibliographical reference

Idéfix:identifying accidental sample mix-ups in biobanks using polygenic scores

MOTIVATION: Identifying sample mix-ups in biobanks is essential to allow the repurposing of genetic data for clinical pharmacogenetics. Pharmacogenetic advice based on the genetic information of another individual is potentially harmful. Existing methods for identifying mix-ups are limited to datasets in which additional omics data (e.g. gene expression) is available. Cohorts lacking such data can only use sex, which can reveal only half of the mix-ups. Here, we describe Idéfix, a method for the identification of accidental sample mix-ups in biobanks using polygenic scores. RESULTS: In the Lifelines population-based biobank, we calculated polygenic scores (PGSs) for 25 traits for 32 786 participants. We then applied Idéfix to compare the actual phenotypes to PGSs, and to use the relative discordance that is expected for mix-ups, compared to correct samples. In a simulation, using induced mix-ups, Idéfix reaches an AUC of 0.90 using 25 polygenic scores and sex. This is a substantial improvement over using only sex, which has an AUC of 0.75. Subsequent simulations present Idéfix’s potential in varying datasets with more powerful PGSs. This suggests its performance will likely improve when more highly powered GWASs for commonly measured traits will become available. Idéfix can be used to identify a set of high-quality participants for whom it is very unlikely that they reflect sample mix-ups, and for these participants we can use genetic data for clinical purposes, such as pharmacogenetic profiles. For instance, in Lifelines, we can select 34.4% of participants, reducing the sample mix-up rate from 0.15% to 0.01%. AVAILABILITYAND IMPLEMENTATION: Idéfix is freely available at https://github.com/molgenis/systemsgenetics/wiki/Idefix. The individual-level data that support the findings were obtained from the Lifelines biobank under project application number ov16_0365. Data is made available upon reasonable request submitted to the LifeLines Research office ([email protected], https://www.lifelines.nl/researcher/how-to-apply/apply-here). L-Carnitine Reduces in Human Conjunctival Epithelial Cells Hypertonic- Induced Shrinkage through Interacting with TRPV1 Channels

Background/Aims: Ocular surface health depends on conjunctival epithelial (HCjE) layer integrity since it protects against pathogenic infiltration and contributes to tissue hydration maintenance. As the same increases in tear film hyperosmolarity described in dry eye disease can increase corneal epithelial transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 (TRPV1) channel activity, we evaluated its involvement in mediating an osmoprotective effect by L-carnitine against such stress. Methods: Using siRNA gene silencing, Ca2+imaging, planar patch- clamping and relative cell volume measurements, we determined if the protective effects of this osmolyte stem from its interaction with TRPV1. Results: TRPV1 activation by capsaicin (CAP) and an increase in osmolarity to≈450 mOsM both induced increases in Ca2+levels. In contrast, blocking TRPV1 activation with capsazepine (CPZ) fully reversed this response. Similarly, L-carnitine (1 mM) also reduced underlying whole-cell currents. In calcein-AM loaded cells, hypertonic-induced relative cell volume shrinkage was fully blocked during exposure to L-carnitine. On the other hand, in TRPV1 gene-silenced cells, this protective effect by L-carnitine was obviated. Conclusion: The described L-carnitine osmoprotective effect is elicited through suppression of hypertonic-induced TRPV1 activation leading to increases in L-carnitine uptake through a described Na+-dependent L-carnitine transporter

In the title compound, hexa-μ2-bromido-μ4-oxo-tetrakis{[3-(1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinyl)pyridine-κN]copper(II)}, [Cu4Br6O(C10H14N2)4], the four Cu atoms are tetrahedrally arranged around the O atom at the cluster center. The Cu and coordinated N atoms lie along directions which correspond to four of the eight threefold axial directions of a regular octahedron. Each Cu atom lies at the center of a trigonal bipyramid, with the O atom and the pyridine N atom of a nicotine ligand in the axial positions and three Br atoms in the equatorial positions. Average bond distances are: Cu—N = 1.979 (8), Cu—O = 1.931 (6), Cu—Br = 2.514 (14) and Cu⋯Cu = 3.154 (6) ÅÅ. The configuration of the nicotine ligands is that of the trans diastereomer. In addition, the crystal structure contains five intramolecular C—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds, which determine (or support) the orientation of the nicotine molecules relative to their three equatorial Br atoms. One of the nicotine molecules has two C—H⋯Br contacts, while the other three nicotine molecules show only one C—H⋯Br bond each. Two other intermolecular C—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds connect the complex molecules, forming ribbons which extend in the b- and c-axis directions
