Complementing Theoretical Approaches for Understanding the Rise of the Global South and the Challenges for “the Rest”

This article analyzes the economic convergence of the global South with the global North (GS and GN, respectively) as well as the divergence within the GS between Asia and “the rest” (Latin America and Africa). In order to address these processes, the paper is structured in three parts. In the first part, the fundamentals that support this “divergent convergence” are considered in light of two theoretical perspectives: world-systems analysis (WSA) and Latin American Structuralism (LAS). We take into account the analytical tools of these theoretical perspectives and differentiate the historical, systemic, and top-down approach of WSA (focused on the contributions of Wallerstein and Arrighi) from the historical, structural, and bottom-up perspective of LAS. In the second part, we analyze the convergence of the GS with the GN in terms of economic dynamic, economic dynamism, and control of the accumulation process, as well as the divergence within the GS between Asia and “the rest”. We finally argue the possibility and necessity of complementing WSA and LAS approaches in order to explain these simultaneous processes of “divergent convergence” and to reflect on the challenges for the rest of the GS in facing the consolidation of Asian dominance under Chinese leadership.Fil: Fernández, Víctor Ramiro. A New World System from the Global South: Great Convergence and Accelerated Geographic Displacement

Desde inicios del nuevo siglo y bajo las transformaciones desplegadas en los últimos 50 años a partir de la crisis cíclica del capitalismo, tiene lugar un creciente desplazamiento espacial del proceso de acumulación hacia el Sur Global (SG). Tomando este último como unidad de análisis (y observando en su interior la interrelación de las macro regiones que lo componen), dicho desplazamiento es analizado a través de variables asociadas a su dinámica, dinamismo y creciente capacidad de control sobre las cadenas de producción global. Inserto todo ello en el marco de la explosión demográfica del SG, los resultados dan cuenta de una inédita alteración de la estructura jerárquica del capitalismo desde su nacimiento, al tiempo que abre un nuevo mapa para el examen de las jerarquías y su funcionamiento respecto del habitual esquema analítico (centro – semi-periferia – periferia) difundido por la teoría del sistema mundo. Una redefinición de la agenda analítica y estratégica se desprende de ello a nivel geopolítico y geoeconómico global.t. Since the beginning of the new century and under the transformations unfolded in the last 50 years from the cyclical crisis of capitalism, takes place a growing spatial displacement of the accumulation process towards the Global South (GS). Taking the latter as the unit of analysis (and observing in its interior the interrelation of the macro regions that compose it), this displacement is analyzed through variables associated with its dynamics, dynamism and growing capacity to control the production global chains. Inserting all of this within the framework of the demographic explosion of the GS, the results show an unprecedented alteration of the hierarchical structure of capitalism since its birth, while opening a new map for the examination of hierarchies and their functioning with respect to of the usual analytical scheme (center – semi-periphery – periphery) diffused by the theory of the world system. Visual acuity is reduced in alpha 7 nicotinic receptor knockout mice.

PURPOSE Nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) are part of a heterogeneous family of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels that are widely expressed in the visual system. The impact of α7 homomeric nAChRs on visual function was investigated using mutant mice lacking the α7 nicotinic receptor subunit. METHODS The spatial resolution limit was measured in α7 knockout (α7 KO) and age-matched control mice using three independent methods: an operant behavioral visual task (Prusky maze), cortical visual evoked potentials (VEPs), and the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) evoked by alternating gratings of different spatial frequencies and contrasts. RESULTS Visual acuity measured by means of the visual water maze task was significantly decreased in the α7 KO mice and, concordantly, there was a reduction of the cortical spatial resolution limit measured by VEPs. However, the PERG was normal in α7 KO mice, compared with control mice. The use of fluorescently tagged cholera toxin showed that projections from the retina segregate normally in α7 KO mice and, in line with this, the visual cortical responses elicited by stimulating either eye were normally balanced in both visual cortices and showed no retinotopic anomalies. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that the absence of the α7 nicotinic subunit reduces visual acuity. Because the cortical output has an abnormal spatial resolution but retinal output is preserved, it can be concluded that the low visual acuity was due to a deficit specifically present in the visual cortex

La lógica geopolítica del Estado chino y la Iniciativa de la Franja y la Ruta en la Argentina

En 2022, la Argentina firmó un memorándum de entendimiento con la República Popular de China para integrar formalmente la “Iniciativa de la Franja y la Ruta” (ifr). La incorporación de la Argentina es de importancia significativa, ya que Beijing espera que sirva para atraer hacia la iniciativa a los otros dos grandes actores de la región, México y Brasil. El gobierno argentino sostiene que la firma del acuerdo posibilita el desembolso de inversiones por más de 24 mil millones de dólares. Sin embargo, una estrategia de crecimiento motorizada por préstamos e inversiones extranjeras se presenta como un problema para un país como este cuya economía se encuentra marcada por los déficits en su balanza de pagos y por problemas en la sustentabilidad de su deuda. Manual guía: ¿Cómo hacer tu propia revista?

Teniendo en cuenta la experiencia propia, cercana, real y productiva a la hora de combatir la problemática planteada en líneas anteriores, surgió la idea de mostrar un camino. Basarse en experiencias personales, con proyectos propios, para pensar en campos conquistados a través de una práctica. Poder aportar sobre la posibilidad de un nuevo emprendimiento, a aquellas personas interesadas en llevar adelante un producto periodístico. Es bien sabido, que el campo actual del comunicador, se lo ha conseguido el propio comunicador social. Lo primero que aparece en términos de la formación fue la figura del periodismo, como motor de los que después se va a ser la comunicación. Dentro de un mercado periodístico tan trillado, con tanto juego de oferta y demanda, y con grandes empresas que conviven en esta industria de la comunicación actual, se nos ocurrió la posibilidad de mostrar la alternativa de poder visualizar un espacio dentro del juego, para trabajarlo y aprovecharlo en pos de un producto comunicacional proyectado y concreto. Para eso, y exprimiendo la experiencia previa ya mencionada, nos meteremos en los procesos de elaboración de las publicaciones graficas de distribución gratuitas que se pueden ver hoy en espacios públicos, al alcance de la mano. Esas “revistitas” que te ofrecen en la calle, o que en la mayoría de los casos están en los mostradores de los comercio de tu barrio. Esa misma que no tienen costo alguno, pero en su interior pueden tener cosas muy interesantes y particulares. Estas publicaciones a la que nos referimos, son las que están proyectadas para un público determinado, tiene contenido periodístico y están sustentadas por la venta de avisos publicitarios, y enmarcadas en un proceso de elaboración previo, trabajado y estudiado. Estas revistas, en su proceso de realización, cierran un círculo, con muchas cosas a tener en cuenta. There are 12 subunit genes that derive from a common ancestral gene: 9 ␣ subunits (␣2 to ␣10) and 4 ␤ subunits (␤2 to ␤4). Neuronal nAChRs fall into two main classes: homomeric or heteromeric ␣-bungarotoxin (␣Bgtx)-sensitive receptors consisting of ␣7, ␣8, or ␣7-␣8 and/or ␣10 subunits and ␣Bgtx-insensitive heteromeric receptors consisting of ␣2-␣6 and ␤2-␤4 subunits. Nicotinic AChRs are permeable to Na ϩ , K ϩ , and Ca 2ϩ ions, and their cation permeability is influenced by their subunit composition. The ␣7 subunit that forms native pentameric homomeric receptors is highly expressed in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, and neocortex of rodents. 1 Alpha-7 knockout (KO) mice, which are characterized by the loss of ␣Bgtx receptors and the lack of nicotineevoked fast desensitizing currents in neurons, 2 are viable with apparently normal brain anatomy. In terms of behavior, the performance of ␣7 KO mice in the classic Morris water maze test, the Pavlovian conditioned fear test and the prepulse inhibition paradigm are similar to those of wild-type (WT) mice, which suggests that the absence of ␣7 nAChRs has little impact on normal, baseline behavioral responses. 3 Moreover, ␣7 KO mice show a reduced anxietyrelated response, 3 whereas only mice lacking both the ␣7 and the ␤2 nAChR subunits show impaired learning and memory in a passive avoidance test, and enhanced motor activity on the rota rod. 6 Although ␣7 KO mice are widely used in behavioral studies, no attempt has been made to characterize their visual function.
