Some features and predictions of a recently proposed model based on diquark-antidiquark bound states are illustrated. Its ability in accomodating newly discovered charmed resonances around 4 GeV is discussed.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the HEP2005 International Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics, July 21st-27th 2005, Lisboa, Portuga

Quasi-periodic Oscillations in the X-ray Light Curves from Relativistic Tori

We use a relativistic ray-tracing code to analyze the X-ray emission from a pressure-supported oscillating relativistic torus around a black hole. We show that a strong correlation exists between the {\it intrinsic} frequencies of the torus normal modes and the {\it extrinsic} frequencies seen in the observed light curve power spectrum. This correlation demonstrates the feasibility of the oscillating-torus model to explain the multiple peaks seen in black hole high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations. Using an optically thin, monochromatic emission model, we also determine how a relativistically broadened emission line and the amplitude of the X-ray modulations are dependent on the observer's inclination angle and on the torus oscillation amplitudes. Observations of these features can provide important information about the torus as well as the black hole.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJ

Clinical management of a peri-implant giant cell granuloma

Purpose. Implant therapy plays an important role in contemporary dentistry with high rates of long-term success. However, in recent years, the incidence of peri-implantitis and implant failures has significantly increased. The peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) rarely occurs in peri-implant tissues and it is clinically comparable to the lesions associated with natural teeth. Therefore, the study of possible diseases associated with dental implants plays an important role in order to be able to diagnose and treat these conditions. Materials and Methods. This report described a 60-year-old Caucasian male who presented a reddish-purple pedunculated mass, of about 2 cm in diameter, associated with a dental implant and the adjacent natural tooth. Results. An excisional biopsy was performed and the dental implant was not removed. Histological examination provided the diagnosis of PGCG. After 19-month follow-up, there were no signs of recurrence of peri-implantitis around the implant. Conclusion. The correct diagnosis and appropriate surgical treatment of peri-implant giant cell granuloma are very important for a proper management of the lesion in order to preserve the implant prosthetic rehabilitation and prevent recurrences

O ensino da Filosofia do Direito e do Método do Caso: algumas considerações sobre os desafios na América Latina

The case-method became the main methodology for achieving significant learning outcomes in Law. The pedagogical and didactical advantages of this method for legal disciplines, such as criminal law, civil law, and contracts are well known. Nevertheless, the educational contributions of the case method for jurisprudence, legal theory or the philosophy of law are less examined. In this article, I will maintain that case method can actually make a significant contribution to teach and learn philosophy of law in the Latin-American educational context. I will argue the former by highlighting some preconditions for a meaningful learning and teaching experience on philosophical problems through case-method. Later, I will present three challenges of case-method education applied to the philosophy of law; that is, (a) recruitment of highly qualified teachers; (b) training on this teaching methodology, considering the peculiarities of legal philosophy; (c) considerations for implementing the case-method in large courses. Palavras-chave: método do caso, formação jurídica, filosofia jurídica, metodologia aprendizagem ativo

Domination parameters with number 2: interrelations and algorithmic consequences

In this paper, we study the most basic domination invariants in graphs, in which number 2 is intrinsic part of their definitions. We classify them upon three criteria, two of which give the following previously studied invariants: the weak 22-domination number, γw2(G)\gamma_{w2}(G), the 22-domination number, γ2(G)\gamma_2(G), the {2}\{2\}-domination number, γ{2}(G)\gamma_{\{2\}}(G), the double domination number, γ×2(G)\gamma_{\times 2}(G), the total {2}\{2\}-domination number, γt{2}(G)\gamma_{t\{2\}}(G), and the total double domination number, γt×2(G)\gamma_{t\times 2}(G), where GG is a graph in which a corresponding invariant is well defined. The third criterion yields rainbow versions of the mentioned six parameters, one of which has already been well studied, and three other give new interesting parameters. Together with a special, extensively studied Roman domination, γR(G)\gamma_R(G), and two classical parameters, the domination number, γ(G)\gamma(G), and the total domination number, γt(G)\gamma_t(G), we consider 13 domination invariants in graphs GG. In the main result of the paper we present sharp upper and lower bounds of each of the invariants in terms of every other invariant, large majority of which are new results proven in this paper. As a consequence of the main theorem we obtain some complexity results for the studied invariants, in particular regarding the existence of approximation algorithms and inapproximability bounds.Comment: 45 pages, 4 tables, 7 figure

Will black hole-neutron star binary inspirals tell us about the neutron star equation of state?

The strong tidal forces that arise during the last stages of the life of a black hole-neutron star binary may severely distort, and possibly disrupt, the star. Both phenomena will imprint signatures about the stellar structure in the emitted gravitational radiation. The information from the disruption, however, is confined to very high frequencies, where detectors are not very sensitive. We thus assess whether the lack of tidal distortion corrections in data-analysis pipelines will affect the detection of the inspiral part of the signal and whether these may yield information on the equation of state of matter at nuclear densities. Using recent post-Newtonian expressions and realistic equations of state to model these scenarios, we find that point-particle templates are sufficient for the detection of black hole-neutron star inspiralling binaries, with a loss of signals below 1% for both second and third-generation detectors. Such detections may be able to constrain particularly stiff equations of state, but will be unable to reveal the presence of a neutron star with a soft equation of state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
