    Get PDF
Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is the most common cancer originating in the nasopharynx. However, the lack of symptoms makes it difficult to diagnose. It is most frequent in males and when it occurs in women, viral and genetic factors are involved. Methods: We present the case of a female patient who was admitted to the hospital with severe headache and tinnitus. Symptoms started 3 months prior to hospitalization, but without response to analgesics. She was diagnosed in March 2011 with mild hypertension, but she did not follow any treatment. We performed a complete examination of the patient .Except for high blood pressure (180 mmHg/ 70mmHg) and increased VSH the analyses were normal. In June 2011 the patient came to our clinic complaining of the same symptoms. During physical examination we discovered a latero-cervical nodular formation, not as a result of a number of diagnostic modalities were used in order to evaluate and determine the diagnosis: thyroid echography, barium examination of esophagus, stomach and duodenum, abdominal echography, CT. Results: CT and the biopsy of the formation confirmed the diagnosis: nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Conclusion: The paraclinical examination is fundamental and most valuable step in order to put the right diagnosis in this particular case

The aromatic profile of wine is offered by the variety of volatile chemical compounds, especially esters, alcohols, carboxylic acids and nitrogen compounds. These substancescan determine different aromas depending on concentration. One of the very important factors in forming aromasis the fermentation temperature whose which has anoptimal value between 15-17 °C. This study evaluated winessamples which were fermented without temperature control, reaching an average temperature inbetween 21-24°C. Following this experiment it was observed how the compounds that give floral and fruity aromas can give unwanted sensations in high concentrations. At the same time, several esters of the fatty acids were observe which give a heavy smell and cause the sensation of fats. The aromatic profile of the sample which was fermented at higher temperature is more affected, even becoming repulsive once the temperature is rising

The study aimed to analyse phenolic compounds from wine samples using “ecological” spectrometric methods (low consumption of chemical reagents) comparing a traditional UV-VIS spectrophotometer to a microplate reader spectrometer. Different experimental wine samples were obtained using active charcoal, gelatine and anionic resins. The used wines were produced from Fetească neagră grapes harvested at full maturity from Şuletea region, Vaslui County, with approx. 290 g/L concentration in fermenting substances.A total of 43 samples were analysed. The microplate reader was shown to be an extremely efficient and economic tool for analysing wines as the linearity of the used methods was shown to be comparative between devices. The time required for analysis is considerably reduced in this case and the versatility of the method allows better statistical evaluation of parameters within the limit of 10% of the relevant significance

There are two main production processes for the quality sparkling wines: traditional and „charmate“methods. In the traditional procedure, the second alcoholic fermentation of the base wine is carried out in sealed bottles. Some of the most popular sparkling wines, such as Champagne and Cava, are produced by the traditional method. Sensory and organoleptic characteristics are one of the most important indicators of sparkling wine quality for the acceptability of a product by consumers. So, this research is focused on the study of the influence of different yeasts strains on the organoleptic profile of the experimental sparkling white wines produced by traditional method. Therefore, a Muscat Ottonel grape must was used and passed by a reverse osmosis process. The obtained permeate was mixed with a calculated amount of the concentrate to generate a must with a potential of 10.5% (v/v) alcohol, in order to obtain the base wine for the second fermentation. The obtained, stabilized, sparkling wine was analyzed for oenological parameters and to determine the organoleptic characteristics. Following the organoleptic analysis, the significant differences in the sensory profile for the analyzed wine samples were confirmed

Meet me on the other side: trans-bilayer modulation of a model voltage-gated ion channel activity by membrane electrostatics asymmetry.

While it is accepted that biomembrane asymmetry is generated by proteins and phospholipids distribution, little is known about how electric changes manifested in a monolayer influence functional properties of proteins localized on the opposite leaflet. Herein we used single-molecule electrophysiology and investigated how asymmetric changes in the electrostatics of an artificial lipid membrane monolayer, generated oppositely from where alamethicin--a model voltage-gated ion channel--was added, altered peptide activity. We found that phlorizin, a membrane dipole potential lowering amphiphile, augmented alamethicin activity and transport features, whereas the opposite occurred with RH-421, which enhances the monolayer dipole potential. Further, the monolayer surface potential was decreased via adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate, and demonstrated that vectorial modification of it also affected the alamethicin activity in a predictive manner. A new paradigm is suggested according to which asymmetric changes in the monolayer dipole and surface potential extend their effects spatially by altering the intramembrane potential, whose gradient is sensed by distantly located peptides

The present challenging environment determines organizations to differentiate themselves from their competitors finding creative solutions. Business Excellence Models (BEMs) is the appropriate instrument for organizations to create authentic competitive advantages. In dynamic and changing environments characterized by technological changes, a sustainable advantage requires strong dynamic capabilities and integrated elements of BEMs. A comparative analysis of BEMS evolution presented in the paper reflects the challenges and opportunities for further improvement in organizations. Excellence models have been used successfully also in business education. Business education reflects the added value to sound economic development, balancing social and economic interest (Emiliani, 2004). In general, it refers to competitive and motivated academic staff, quality of teaching and learning activities, leadership and management commitment, sustainability of university-business relationship, internationalization strategy and comprehensive curriculum adapted to business environment. There are a lot of environmental forces in different national environments that are placing the excellence dimension on higher education agenda. At the same time, limitations of BEMs models and the nature of higher education institutions put a lot of challenges on leadership and management of these organizations. The objective of the paper is to present and analyse the application of excellence models in higher education institutions and identify creative solutions for management performance
