Introducing new constructs for data modelling and column generation in LP modelling languages
Through popular implementation of structured query language (SQL) and query-by-example(QBE) relational databases have become the de-facto industry standard for data modelling.We consider the indices, sets, and the declarative form of Linear Programming (LP) modelling languages and introduce new constructs which provide direct link to the database systems. The models constructed in this way are data driven and display a dynamicstructure. We then show how this approach can be naturally extended to include column generation features stated in procedural forms within an otherwise declarative modelling paradigm
Sets and indices in linear programming modelling and their integration with relational data models
LP models are usually constructed using index sets and data tables which are closely related to the attributes and relations of relational database (RDB) systems. We extend the syntax of MPL, an existing LP modelling language, in order to connect it to a given RDB system. This approach reuses existing modelling and database software, provides a rich modelling environment and achieves model and data independence. This integrated software enables Mathematical Programming to be widely used as a decision support tool by unlocking the data residing in corporate databases
The Langley Research Center CSI phase-0 evolutionary model testbed-design and experimental results
A testbed for the development of Controls Structures Interaction (CSI) technology is described. The design philosophy, capabilities, and early experimental results are presented to introduce some of the ongoing CSI research at NASA-Langley. The testbed, referred to as the Phase 0 version of the CSI Evolutionary model (CEM), is the first stage of model complexity designed to show the benefits of CSI technology and to identify weaknesses in current capabilities. Early closed loop test results have shown non-model based controllers can provide an order of magnitude increase in damping in the first few flexible vibration modes. Model based controllers for higher performance will need to be robust to model uncertainty as verified by System ID tests. Data are presented that show finite element model predictions of frequency differ from those obtained from tests. Plans are also presented for evolution of the CEM to study integrated controller and structure design as well as multiple payload dynamics
A synopsis of test results and knowledge gained from the Phase-0 CSI evolutionary model
The Phase-0 CSI Evolutionary Model (CEM) is a testbed for the study of space platform global line-of-sight (LOS) pointing. Now that the tests have been completed, a summary of hardware and closed-loop test experiences is necessary to insure a timely dissemination of the knowledge gained. The testbed is described and modeling experiences are presented followed by a summary of the research performed by various investigators. Some early lessons on implementing the closed-loop controllers are described with particular emphasis on real-time computing requirements. A summary of closed-loop studies and a synopsis of test results are presented. Plans for evolving the CEM from phase 0 to phases 1 and 2 are also described. Subsequently, a summary of knowledge gained from the design and testing of the Phase-0 CEM is made

Cet article de synthèse établit un lien entre la diversification des systèmes agricoles et le contrôle naturel des insectes ravageurs d'une part, et l'écologie du paysage d'autre part. L'analyse de la revue de littérature réalisée suggère que cette jeune science et le recours à la géomatique pourraient non seulement permettre de concevoir de nouvelles approches en recherche, mais aussi de participer à l'aménagement des agroécosystèmes à des fins de phytoprotection dans une perspective d'agriculture durable au Québec.In this review we establish a link between the diversification of agricultural systems and natural control of crop pests in one hand, and in the other hand the potential contribution of a young science, landscape ecology, which associated with geomatic, can elaborate new ways in research and take part in managing agroecosystems for crop protection in a sustainable manner in Québec
Effects of X-rays on vascular function in transplanted tumours and normal tissues in the mouse.
The effects of X-radiation on the Nembutal-induced redistribution of the cardiac output in two types of transplanted mouse tumours and some normal mouse tissues have been investigated, using rubidium-86 and 125I-human serum albumin. Irradiation causes an increase in 86Rb uptake (relative blood perfusion) by the tumours of anaesthetized mice, but has little or no effect in non-anaesthetized mice. The increase is dose- and time-dependent. Tumour plasma space is not significantly affected by radiation and Nembutal. Muscle blood perfusion is severely decreased in anaesthetized mice and is not affected by radiation, at least within the time limits of the experiments. This means that radiation-induced functional vascular changes in normal and neoplastic tissues follow different time courses. On the basis of the present results, and of the results of other authors, it is argued that irradiation damages the vasculature of tumours in such a way that it becomes more sensitive to changes in systemic blood pressure
A Submillimeter HCN Laser in IRC+10216
We report the detection of a strong submillimeter wavelength HCN laser line
at a frequency near 805 GHz toward the carbon star IRC+10216. This line, the
J=9-8 rotational transition within the (04(0)0) vibrationally excited state, is
one of a series of HCN laser lines that were first detected in the laboratory
in the early days of laser spectroscopy. Since its lower energy level is 4200 K
above the ground state, the laser emission must arise from the inner part of
IRC+10216's circumstellar envelope. To better characterize this environment, we
observed other, thermally emitting, vibrationally excited HCN lines and find
that they, like the laser line, arise in a region of temperature approximately
1000 K that is located within the dust formation radius; this conclusion is
supported by the linewidth of the laser. The (04(0)0), J=9-8 laser might be
chemically pumped and may be the only known laser (or maser) that is excited
both in the laboratory and in space by a similar mechanism.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
A simple interpretation of quantum mirages
In an interesting new experiment the electronic structure of a magnetic atom
adsorbed on the surface of Cu(111), observed by STM, was projected into a
remote location on the same surface. The purpose of the present paper is to
interpret this experiment with a model Hamiltonian, using ellipses of the size
of the experimental ones, containing about 2300 atoms. The charge distribution
for the different wavefunctions is analyzed, in particular, for those with
energy close to the Fermi energy of copper Ef. Some of them show two symmetric
maxima located on the principal axis of the ellipse but not necessarily at the
foci. If a Co atom is adsorbed at the site where the wavefunction with energy
has a maximum and the interaction is small, the main effect of the
adsorbed atom will be to split this particular wavefunction in two. The total
charge density will remain the same but the local density of states will
present a dip at Ef at any site where the charge density is large enough. We
relate the presence of this dip to the observation of quantum mirages. Our
interpretation suggests that other sites, apart from the foci of the ellipses,
can be used for projecting atomic images and also indicates the conditions for
other non magnetic adsorbates to produce mirages.Comment: 3 pages, 3 Fig
Performance of a 13-Stage Development Compressor for the J40-WE-24 Engine at Equivalent Speeds from 30 to 112 Percent of Design
The performance of a 13-stage development comressor for the J40-WE-24 engine has been determined at equivalent speeds from 30 to 112 percent of design. The design total-pressure ratio of 6.0 and the design weight flow of 164 pounds per second were not attained, An analysis was conducted to determine the reasons for the poor performance at the design and over-design speed. The analysis indicated that most of the difficulty could be attributed to the fact that the first stage was overcompromised to favor part-speed performance
