    Streaming-Based Progressive Enhancement of Websites for Slow and Error-Prone Networks

    This thesis aims to improve the loading times of web pages by streaming the content in a non-render-blocking way. At the beginning of this thesis, a large-scale analysis was performed, spanning all downloadable pages of the top 10.000 web pages according to the Tranco-list. This analysis aimed to gather data about the render-blocking properties of web page resources, including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. It further gathered data about code coverage, giving insight into how much of the render-blocking code is actually used. Therefore, the structural optimization potential could be determined. Less render-blocking code will, in turn, lead to faster loading times due to requiring less data to display the page. The analysis showed that there is significant optimization potential left. On average, modern web pages are built with a combined 86.7% of JavaScript and CSS, the rest being HTML. Both JavaScript and CSS are loaded mostly render-blocking, with 91.8% of JavaScript and 89.47% of CSS loaded in this way. Furthermore, only 40.8% of JavaScript and 15.9% of CSS is used until render. This shows that, on average, web pages have significant room for improvement. The concept, which is then developed based on the results of this analysis, aims to load web pages in a new way by streaming all render-blocking content. The related work showed that multiple sub-techniques are required first, which were conceptualized next. First, an optimization and splitting tool for CSS is proposed, called Essential. This is followed by an optimization framework concept for JavaScript, consisting of Waiter and AUTRATAC. Lastly, a backward-compatible approach was developed, which allows for splitting HTML and streaming all content to a client. The evaluation showed that the streamed web page loads significantly faster when comparing FCP, content ”Above-the-Fold,” and total transfer time of all render-blocking resources of the document. For example, the case study test determined that the streamed page could reduce the time until FCP by 83.3% at 2 Mbps and the time until the last render-blocking data is transferred by up to 70.4% at 2 Mbps. Furthermore, existing streaming methods were also compared, determining that WebSockets meets the requirements to stream web page content sufficiently. Lastly, an anonymous online user questionnaire showed that 85% of users preferred this new style of loading pages

    This thesis investigates the Swedish Moderates? transformation under Fredrik Reinfeldt. The question at issue is as follows: What motive(s) were behind the Moderates? declared transformation after Reinfeldt became party leader? We define the actor who possesses the motives, which is Reinfeldt and his closest associates, and the action we want to explain. Indications of what motives the actor had are given in four separate chapters that together form the foundation of our conclusion. We examine (A) the actor's stated motives, (B) the actor's previous motives, (C) other similar actor's motives and (D) motives behind parties? actions in general. We received strong support for viability and societal change which indicates that the Moderates changed in order to make the policies more viable and to adapt to certain changes in the society. Vote-maximisation got support, although not as strong as viability and societal change. Still, there is a possibility that vote-maximisation was very important for the Moderates. The motive is often denied by parties and is therefore more difficult to find evidence for. However, considering the support we have found in our material, we argue that vote-maximisation probably was of great importance for the Moderates

    Wi-Fi security : wireless with confidence

    Since the IEEE ratification of the 802.11 standard in 1999, continuous exploits have been discovered compromising the confidentiality, integrity and availability of 802.11 networks. This paper describes the justification for a project to assess the security status of wireless network usage in society. It reviews the status of both commercial and residential approaches to wireless network security in three major Victorian cities, Melbourne, Geelong and Mornington, in Australia. By War Driving these suburbs, actual data was gathered to indicate the security status of wireless networks and give a representation of modern attitudes towards wireless security for the sample population. Preliminary results are presented to demonstrate the extent to which commercial or residential suburbs address wireless security. At this stage in the research further work is required to completely analyse the results. It is anticipated that the results will be useful for providing input into a defence and attack methodology for improving the security of both residential and commercial use of wireless networks

    Evaluation of the ALMA Prototype Antennas

    The ALMA North American and European prototype antennas have been evaluated by a variety of measurement systems to quantify the major performance specifications. Nearfield holography was used to set the reflector surfaces to 17 microns RMS. Pointing and fast switching performance was determined with an optical telescope and by millimeter wavelength radiometry, yielding 2 arcsec absolute and 0.6 arcsec offset pointing accuracies. Path length stability was measured to be less than or approximately equal to 20 microns over 10 minute time periods using optical measurement devices. Dynamical performance was studied with a set of accelerometers, providing data on wind induced tracking errors and structural deformation. Considering all measurements made during this evaluation, both prototype antennas meet the major ALMA antenna performance specifications.Comment: 83 pages, 36 figures, AASTex format, to appear in PASP September 2006 issu

    360VR PBL: A New Format of Digital Cases in Clinical Medicine

    In this paper, we present and discuss an explorative study on the use of a social 360° virtual reality (360VR) for supporting case-based Problem Based Learning (case-PBL) in clinical medical education. In the context of case-PBL, we argue that our social 360VR learning space extends the design and application of cases in medical education by including elements from project-PBL. Three groups tested the learning design as a part of the clinical exercises in their 5. Semester bachelor course. After the social 360VR activity, the students performed a physical examination of the collateral and cruciate ligaments of the knee like the one in the training material. Our preliminary findings indicate that the students immersed in social 360VR collaboratively establish a mutual understanding of how to perform the examination through identifying problems related to the examination and by taking responsibility for their own and the other group members learning

    Moth olfactory receptor neurons adjust their encoding efficiency to temporal statistics of pheromone fluctuations

    The efficient coding hypothesis predicts that sensory neurons adjust their coding resources to optimally represent the stimulus statistics of their environment. To test this prediction in the moth olfactory system, we have developed a stimulation protocol that mimics the natural temporal structure within a turbulent pheromone plume. We report that responses of antennal olfactory receptor neurons to pheromone encounters follow the temporal fluctuations in such a way that the most frequent stimulus timescales are encoded with maximum accuracy. We also observe that the average coding precision of the neurons adjusted to the stimulus-timescale statistics at a given distance from the pheromone source is higher than if the same encoding model is applied at a shorter, non-matching, distance. Finally, the coding accuracy profile and the stimulus-timescale distribution are related in the manner predicted by the information theory for the many-to-one convergence scenario of the moth peripheral sensory system
