This interview was carried out on 13 December 2018 as Michael Williams was in Porto for a meeting of the Contextualism Network organised by the MLAG – Mind, Language, and Action Research Group (Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto). We would like to thank him for his willingness to reply to our questions

Expansion of a Fermi Cloud in the BCS-BEC Crossover

We study the free expansion of a dilute two-component Fermi gas with attractive interspecies interaction in the BCS-BEC crossover. We apply a time-dependent parameter-free density-functional theory by using two choices of the equation of state: an analytic formula based on Monte Carlo data and the mean-field equation of state resulting from the extended BCS equations. The calculated axial and transverse radii and the aspect ratio of the expanding cloud are compared to experimental data on vapors of ^6Li atoms. Remarkably, the mean-field theory shows a better agreement with the experiments than the theory based on the Monte Carlo equation of state. Both theories predict a measurable dependence of the aspect ratio on expansion time and on scattering length.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

PRELIMINARY RESULTS ON BEAN PRODUCTION UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF THE PREMONTANEOUS AREA OF TRANSYLVANIA

    Get PDF
The present paper presents a study of the behavior of three flageolets varieties: Lechinţa, Salvica and Viola in the conditions of Transylvania's premontous area under the conditions of irrigated land compared to non-irrigated land and the influence of land fertilization: basic, with natural fertilizer, with chemical fertilizer. Of the three bean varieties, the highest production was obtained in irrigated crops as against non-irrigated crops, and the most productive variety was the Lechinţa variety. The Viola variety gave less production than the other two varieties. With regard to additional fertilization with chemical fertilizer, there were situations where production was lower than for basic fertilization

THE INFLUENCE OF TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS ON THE LEVEL OF SOME SWEET CORN HYBRIDS PRODUCTION IN THE TRANSYLVANIAN CONDITIONS

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of research on the influence of some technological factors on the level of production at irrigated sweet corn, in the conditions of Henig - Alba Iulia, in 2020. As a result of research it was found that irrigation and fertilization applied to sweet corn have a favorable influence on the production obtained. Among the hybrids analyzed, the best results were obtained for the hybrid Deliciul Verii, to which a basic fertilization + additional fertilization with NPK was applied. The results show that in both the irrigated and the non-irrigated version, the differences between the yields obtained by Deliciul Verii and Estival hybrids are significant compared to the Dulcin (control) hybrid. In the case of Deliciul Verii hybrid, the yields obtained are distinctly significant compared to the yields obtained from the Dulcin hybrid, and in the case of the Estival hybrid, the yields obtained are negatively very significant compared to the yields obtained from the Dulcin hybrid

Experimental study on radial gravity currents flowing in a vegetated channel

We present an experimental study of gravity currents in a cylindrical geometry, in the presence of vegetation. Forty tests were performed with a brine advancing in a fresh water ambient fluid, in lock release, and with a constant and time-varying flow rate. The tank is a circular sector of angle 30circ30^circ with radius equal to 180 cm. Two different densities of the vegetation were simulated by vertical plastic rods with diameter D=1.6;extrmcmD=1.6; extrm{cm}. We marked the height of the current as a function of radius and time and the position of the front as a function of time. The results indicate a self-similar structure, with lateral profiles that after an initial adjustment collapse to a single curve in scaled variables. The propagation of the front is well described by a power law function of time. The existence of self-similarity on an experimental basis corroborates a simple theoretical model with the following assumptions: (i) the dominant balance is between buoyancy and drag, parameterized by a power law of the current velocity simulambda1usim |u|^{lambda-1}u; (ii) the current advances in shallow-water conditions; (iii) ambient-fluid dynamics is negligible. In order to evaluate the value of lambda{lambda} (the only tuning parameter of the theoretical model), we performed two additional series of measurements. We found that lambdalambda increased from 1 to 2 while the Reynolds number increased from 100 to approximately 6cdot1036cdot10^3, the drag coefficient and the transition from lambda=1lambda=1 to lambda=2lambda=2 are quantitatively affected by DD, but the structure of the model is not

Tyrosine Hydroxylase and DOPA Decarboxylase Gene Variants in Personality Traits

    Get PDF
Personality influences several characteristics of normal and pathologic behaviors and it is associated with neurotransmitter systems that are under genetic control. The dopaminergic system has been proposed to play a role in the modulation of personality traits. In the present study, variants of the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and DOPA decarboxylase (DDC) genes (for TH: rs3842727, rs6356; for DDC: rs1451371, rs1470750, rs998850) were investigated in 111 suicide attempters and 289 healthy subjects to assess the involvement of the dopaminergic synthesis pathway in personality traits. No strong evidence was found for the associations between personality and TH or DDC in overall tests. An interaction effect of genotype and diagnosis was present, with TH and DDC SNPs having a greater effect on the respective personality dimensions in the group of suicide attempters. Because of the risk of false positives, these findings should be interpreted with highest caution. Direct replication attempts within independent groups of suicide attempters will help to resolve this question. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Base

    La democrazia partecipativa:tendenze all’istituzionalizzazione

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to analyse the participatory democracy taking the perspective of one of the tendencies that cross it: the institutionalisation. Given the premise of a juridical approach to this multidisciplinary subject, the work suggest the adoption of a strict concept of participatory democracy and his instruments, than follows its path over the years throughout different experiences. Having found various degrees of institutionalisation as well as an opposing tension in order to not overregulate the participation, the analysis focus on the French débat public as one of the most accomplished examples of how a participatory instrument with a strong legislative basis can maintain, at the same time, a flexible procedure. Proceeding along this trace the attention shifts to the peculiar status of the participatory democracy in the Italian system. The work sustains the positive value of an institutionalisation’s process, suggesting the introduction of a national law on the citizens’ participation to the public policy-making process. Furthermore it is given an evaluation of the e-democracy set of problems as a consequence of the growing impact of the ICT in this field. In conclusion this research confirms the existence of some strong tendencies to the institutionalisation. These should be carefully balanced, whenever it is decided to begin a participatory experience, so that its instruments could actually reach, in concrete, the theoretical premises brought by the participatory democracy
