    Combination of diffuse reflectance and transmittance spectroscopy to obtain optical properties of liquid phantoms

    We present a simple fiber-optics probe system that could be used in any lab for convenient determination of optical properties of liquid phantoms based on diffuse reflectance and transmittance measurements in the visible/near-infrared region. We employed Monte Carlo simulations to determine the optimal system setup and to test the inverse algorithm employed to extract the optical properties from measured reflectance and transmittance. The inverse algorithm involved obtaining the fit merit function for values within the optical property range and determining the minimum. The performance of the method was tested by predictive error and validated using similar matrix of milk–ink phantoms on reflectance and transmittance. In the range of optical properties of phantoms with optical properties of 0 to 0.5 cm−1 for μa and 20 to 140 cm−1 for μs, the median prediction error for the test phantoms at 630 nm was 1.51% for μs and 8.82% for μa. The median difference in predicted values versus expected values was 1.15 cm−1 for μs and 0.01 cm−1 for μa. In comparison with other techniques, our method was a simple, fast, and convenient way to determine optical properties of liquid phantoms

    Determination optical properties of tissue-like phantoms using diffuse reflectance and transmittance spectroscopy

    We present a simple, convenient fibre-optics probe system for the determination optical properties of tissue-like liquid phantoms based on diffuse reflectance and transmittance measurements at the wavelength of visible-near-infrared region. The method combined Monte Carlo simulations, multiple polynomial regression and a Newton-Raphson algorithm for solving nonlinear equation system. In the range of optical properties of phantom with the μa at 0 – 0.5 cm-1 and the μs’ at 3 – 45 cm-1, the mean prediction error at 630 nm was 1.91 % for μs’ and 7.51 % for μa. The performance of the method is further tested by predictive error and validated using similar matrix of milk-ink phantoms on reflectance and transmittance

    Flip-chip integration of tilted VCSELs onto a silicon photonic integrated circuit

    In this article we describe a cost-effective approach for hybrid laser integration, in which vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are passively-aligned and flip-chip bonded to a Si photonic integrated circuit (PIC), with a tilt-angle optimized for optical-insertion into standard grating-couplers. A tilt-angle of 10 degrees is achieved by controlling the reflow of the solder ball deposition used for the electrical-contacting and mechanical-bonding of the VCSEL to the PIC. After flip-chip integration, the VCSEL-to-PIC insertion loss is -11.8 dB, indicating an excess coupling penalty of -5.9 dB, compared to Fibre-to-PIC coupling. Finite difference time domain simulations indicate that the penalty arises from the relatively poor match between the VCSEL mode and the grating-coupler. (C) 2016 Optical Society of Americ

    In Silico Syndrome Prediction for Coronary Artery Disease in Traditional Chinese Medicine

    Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading causes of deaths in the world. The differentiation of syndrome (ZHENG) is the criterion of diagnosis and therapeutic in TCM. Therefore, syndrome prediction in silico can be improving the performance of treatment. In this paper, we present a Bayesian network framework to construct a high-confidence syndrome predictor based on the optimum subset, that is, collected by Support Vector Machine (SVM) feature selection. Syndrome of CAD can be divided into asthenia and sthenia syndromes. According to the hierarchical characteristics of syndrome, we firstly label every case three types of syndrome (asthenia, sthenia, or both) to solve several syndromes with some patients. On basis of the three syndromes' classes, we design SVM feature selection to achieve the optimum symptom subset and compare this subset with Markov blanket feature select using ROC. Using this subset, the six predictors of CAD's syndrome are constructed by the Bayesian network technique. We also design Naïve Bayes, C4.5 Logistic, Radial basis function (RBF) network compared with Bayesian network. In a conclusion, the Bayesian network method based on the optimum symptoms shows a practical method to predict six syndromes of CAD in TCM

    Stability and drug dissolution evaluation of Qingkailing soft/hard capsules based on multi-component quantification and fingerprint pattern statistical analysis

    Purpose: To carry out a post-marketing evaluation of the stability and drug dissolution of Qingkailing soft/hard capsules.Methods: High performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) method was developed for the determination of three key ingredients (chlorogenic acid, geniposide and baicalin) and fingerprints of QKL soft/hard capsules. Stability tests were carried out based on long-term testing. The drug release profile of Qingkailing soft and hard capsules were studied using semi-bionic incubation experiments.Results: The linearity, precision, stability, repeatability and recovery of HPLC and fingerprint all met the requirements of CFDA. Stability data from long-term studies showed that within 6 months the contents of the three key ingredients in both soft and hard capsules remained > 90 %. However, fingerprint pattern statistical analysis showed that the soft capsule is more stable than the hard capsule. Furthermore, the key ingredients of the hard capsule dissolved much faster (p < 0.05) than from the soft capsule. The level of dissolved drug of hard capsule is about 4 times the rate of soft capsule, after a 4-h incubation in gastric lavage fluid. In intestinal lavage fluid, more than 90 % of chlorogenic acid, geniposide and baicalin of hard capsule were dissolved in 2 h, while the soft capsule displayed a 12 h sustained release. Fingerprint pattern statistical analysis also showed that most of the components of soft capsule dissolved after 8 h.Conclusion: Compared with the hard capsule, Qingkailing soft capsule has certain advantages in stability and drug dissolution, which may affect the biopharmaceutics and the clinical effects of the drug.Keywords: Qingkailing capsule, Chlorogenic acid, Geniposide, Baicalin, Fingerprint, Sustained release, Principal component analysi
