    Detection and recognition of end-of-speed-limit and supplementary signs for improved european speed limit support

    International audienceWe present two new features for our prototype of European Speed Limit Support system: detection and recognition of end-of-speed-limit signs, as well as a framework for detection and recognition of supplementary signs located below main signs and modifying their scope (particular lane, class of vehicle, etc...). The end-of-speed-limit signs are globallyrecognized by a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network. The supplementary signs are detected by applying a rectangle-detection in a region below recognized speed-limit signs, followed by a MLP neural network recognition. A common French+German end-of-speed-limit signs recognition has been designed and successfully tested, yielding 82% detection+recognition. Results for detection and recognition of a first kind of supplementary sign (French exit-lane) are already satisfactory (78% correct detection rate), and our framework can easily be extended to handle other types of supplementary signs. To our knowledge, we are the first team presenting results on detection and recognition of supplementary signs below speed signs, which is a crucial feature for a reliable Speed Limit Support

    The team absorptive capacity triad:a configurational study of individual, enabling, and motivating factors

    Purpose The paper aims to understand how knowledge-intensive teams can develop and enhance their team absorptive capacity (ACAP) level, by exploring whether individual and organizational factors are complements or substitutes for team ACAP. Design/methodology/approach The study applies a configurational approach using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to identify combinations of individual and team factors that are associated with team ACAP. Data were gathered through a survey among 297 employees of four medium-sized Dutch firms, working in 48 functional teams. Findings The primary finding is that knowledge-intensive team ACAP depends on a triad of complementary factors: team members’ individual ACAP, factors that enable knowledge integration and factors that motivate knowledge integration. Underdevelopment of one or more factors leads to lower team ACAP. Research limitations/implications The study contributes to the discussion on the locus of knowledge-creation and enhances understandings of why knowledge-intensive teams differ in knowledge processing capabilities. It suggests future research on cross-functional teams in new ventures and large firms. Practical implications The paper informs managers and team leaders about the factors that determine knowledge-intensive teams’ ACAP, enabling them to develop team-specific strategies to increase their teams’ performance. Originality/value The study takes a holistic perspective on knowledge-intensive team ACAP by using a configurational approach. It also highlights the potential of team-level research in the knowledge management literature for both researchers and practitioners

    A computer program builds application programming interfaces (APIs) and related software components for installing and uninstalling application programs in any of a variety of computers and operating systems that support the Java programming language in its binary form. This program is partly similar in function to commercial (e.g., Install-Shield) software. This program is intended to enable satisfaction of a quasi-industry-standard set of requirements for a set of APIs that would enable such installation and uninstallation and that would avoid the pitfalls that are commonly encountered during installation of software. The requirements include the following: 1) Properly detecting prerequisites to an application program before performing the installation; 2) Properly registering component requirements; 3) Correctly measuring the required hard-disk space, including accounting for prerequisite components that have already been installed; and 4) Correctly uninstalling an application program. Correct uninstallation includes (1) detecting whether any component of the program to be removed is required by another program, (2) not removing that component, and (3) deleting references to requirements of the to-be-removed program for components of other programs so that those components can be properly removed at a later time

    Robust on-vehicle real-time visual detection of American and European speed limit signs, with a modular Traffic Signs Recognition system

    International audienceIn this paper, we present robust visual speed limit signs detection and recognition systems for American and European signs. Both are variants of the same modular traffic signs recognition architecture, with a sign detection step based only on shape-detection (rectangles or circles), which makes our systems insensitive to color variability and quite robust to illumination variations. Instead of a global recognition, our system classifies (or rejects) the speed-limit sign candidates by segmenting potential digits inside them, and then applying a neural network digit recognition. This helps handling global sign variability, as long as digits are properly recognized. The global sign detection rate is around 90% for both (standard) U.S. and E.U. speed limit signs, with a misclassification rate below 1%, and not a single validated false alarm in >150 minutes of recorded videos. The system processes in real-time videos with images of 640x480 pixels, at ~20frames/s on a standard 2.13GHz dual-core laptop

Our sign detection step is based only on shape-detection (rectangles or circles). This enables it to work on grayscale images, contrary to most European competitors, which eases robustness to illumination conditions (notably night operation). Speed sign candidates are classified (or rejected) by segmenting potential digits inside them (which is rather original and has several advantages), and then applying a neural digit recognition. The global detection rate is ~90% for both (standard) U.S. and E.U. speed signs, with a misclassification rate 150 minutes of video. The system processes in real-time ~20 frames/s on a standard high-end laptop

    Engaged queer scholarship: Probing a new paradigm of knowledge creation

    This article features a reflexive iteration of engaged scholarship regarding the Queer Liberation Theory Project, a community-based research study with the social justice group Queer Ontario, which involves academics, activists, and artists, a number of whom are cross affiliated. We explore the tensions and challenges involved in developing and creating knowledge via an engaged scholarship process that must respect the historical philosophical perspectives of a social movement as well as today’s academic theories. This article addresses the challenges of developing new knowledge (a theory) that counters a powerful, neoliberal, mainstream segment of today’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movements, with implications for society at large. The layered issues associated with engaged scholarship are disentangled, including vulnerability to neoliberalism, navigating competing perspectives, and how academics/activists/artists both understand and engage in knowledge creation
