    Noun-sense: Short-Term Memory and Correct Recall of Concrete, Abstract and Nonsense Words

    Retrieval of items from short-term memory is a repeat phenomenon in an individual’s everyday life. Recall of some information from short-term memory is more readily available than others, but learning to maximize the amount of information that is retrieved is possible. Using retrieval techniques that involve word concreteness could be of utility in retrieval of information. 81 undergraduate participants were recruited at Lindenwood University. Each participant was asked to complete a task involving the STM recall of words from a list. The list incorporated concrete and abstract nouns, with nonsense words. Participants demonstrated, with significance, the ability to recall more concrete nouns than abstract nouns or nonsense words. Participants also recalled, with significance, abstract nouns over nonsense words

    Business Problem Science is a crucial part of our educational curriculum. It has become vitally important for children to be introduced to science at an earlier age to insure their interest is cultivated throughout the rest of their education. The dilemma is finding interesting ways to engage grade school aged children in learning about science. Technical Solution The All Squirrel Band is a web based phrase completion game hosted by a rock band made up entirely of squirrels. The object of the game is to collect enough nuts for the band to go on tour this winter. Each nut represents a letter of the alphabet used to complete the phrase. A category is given for each phrase. Categories would include subjects pertaining to science. An example category would be the moons of our solar system, where each phrase contains the name of a moon and the planet it orbits. The phrase can then be used to search the web for additional information on the subject. Business Case The purpose of the project is to introduce science to grade school aged children through the use of art, music and games. The project also introduces the use of the internet as a learning tool and resource for information

    Implantable acoustic-beacon automatic fish-tracking system

    A portable automatic fish tracking system was developed for monitoring the two dimensional movements of small fish within fixed areas of estuarine waters and lakes. By using the miniature pinger previously developed for this application, prototype tests of the system were conducted in the York River near the Virginia Institute of Marine Science with two underwater listening stations. Results from these tests showed that the tracking system could position the miniature pinger signals to within + or - 2.5 deg and + or - 135 m at ranges up to 2.5 km. The pingers were implanted in small fish and were successfully tracked at comparable ranges. No changes in either fish behavior or pinger performance were observed as a result of the implantation. Based on results from these prototype tests, it is concluded that the now commercially available system provides an effective approach to underwater tracking of small fish within a fixed area of interest

The finite element (FE) method can be used to study the mechanics at the taper junction that are difficult to assess experimentally. Taper mismatch is one of the factors that can influence the performance of the taper junction. In this study we have assessed the effect of taper mismatch, in combination with assembly force on the volumetric wear. The study showed that higher assembly forces and smaller mismatches result in the least volumetric wear

    Distinguishing cancerous from non-cancerous cells through analysis of electrical noise

    Since 1984, electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) has been used to monitor cell behavior in tissue culture and has proven sensitive to cell morphological changes and cell motility. We have taken ECIS measurements on several cultures of non-cancerous (HOSE) and cancerous (SKOV) human ovarian surface epithelial cells. By analyzing the noise in real and imaginary electrical impedance, we demonstrate that it is possible to distinguish the two cell types purely from signatures of their electrical noise. Our measures include power-spectral exponents, Hurst and detrended fluctuation analysis, and estimates of correlation time; principal-component analysis combines all the measures. The noise from both cancerous and non-cancerous cultures shows correlations on many time scales, but these correlations are stronger for the non-cancerous cells.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; submitted to PR

    The Artfulness Initiative: Art as a Tool for Mindfulness

    The purpose of the Artfulness Initiative is to help its users bring their minds back into the present through the use of arts-based practices as a way to reduce stress and burnout. In a nutshell, the Artfulness Initiative is website that houses a series of process-oriented art practices meant to help adults focus less on the stress of yesterday and tomorrow and focus more on being in the now. It’s important to note that the art process is more important than the product, and that no artistic aptitude or experience is required. The Artfulness website, which was built by ALTLab on Rampages, is accessible to anyone with or without affiliation with VCU; however, the Artfulness Initiative is meant to be advertised to and piloted by VCU faculty and staff. In time the Artfulness Initiative can be implemented by community organizations, such as Boys and Girls Clubs or the Richmond Peace Education Center; in educational settings both within VCU through course offerings, and outside VCU, such as arts, mentorship, or after-school programs in K-12 public schools; and in community college programs and courses, or continuing education programs. Through the Artfulness Initiative, VCU is poised to develop and pilot an online modular curriculum in mindfulness through the arts

    Problems recruiting and retaining postnatal women to a pilot randomised controlled trial of a web-delivered weight loss intervention ISRCTN48086713 ISRCTN

    Abstract Objective This paper highlights recruitment and retention problems identified during a pilot randomised controlled trial and process evaluation. The pilot trial aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a web-delivered weight loss intervention for postnatal women and associated trial protocol. Results General practice database searches revealed low rates of eligible postnatal women per practice. 16 (10%) of the 168 identified women were recruited and randomised, seven to the intervention and nine to the control. 57% (4/7) of the intervention women completed 3 month follow-up measurements in comparison to 56% (5/9) in the control group. By 12 months, retention in the intervention group was 43% (3/7), with 2/7 women active on the website, in comparison to 44% (4/9) of the control group. Interview findings revealed the web as an acceptable method for delivery of the intervention, with the suggestion of an addition of a mobile application. Alternative recruitment strategies, using health visitor appointments, midwifery departments or mother and baby/toddler groups, should be explored. Greater involvement of potential users should enable better recruitment methods to be developed. Trial registration ISRCTN: ISRCTN48086713, Registered 26 October 201
