In this essay I will trace the formulation of the Latin American contribution to Center-Periphery analysis, its diffusion, crisis, reformulation, and decline. I further consider how Center-Periphery perspectives may be reincorporated into (standard) neoclassical economics.

Social media for student learning: enhancing the student experience and promoting deep learning

Traditional Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) was introduced as a retention-motivated initiative in the College of Science and Engineering 5 years ago. Despite a high level of interest from students, there were several practical barriers that prevented many students from attending these sessions. As an alternative, an online space for Virtual Peer Assisted Learning (VPAL) was trialled. VPAL was found to have not only all the benefits of traditional PAL but also more that had not been anticipated. In this paper we will discuss the practicalities involved and the design choices that had to be made. We will also showcase some anonymised examples of academic and social dialogue between peers and outline some of the unexpected advantages of using VPAL over traditional PAL

High altitude gust acceleration environment as experienced by a supersonic airplane

High altitude turbulence experienced at supersonic speeds is described in terms of gust accelerations measured on the YF-12A airplane. The data were obtained during 90 flights at altitudes above 12.2 kilometers (40,000 feet). Subjective turbulence intensity ratings were obtained from air crew members. The air crew often rated given gust accelerations as being more intense during high altitude supersonic flight than during low altitude subsonic flight. The portion of flight distance in turbulence ranged from 6 percent to 8 percent at altitudes between 12.2 kilometers and 16.8 kilometers (40,000 feet and 55,000 feet) to less than 1 percent at altitudes above 18.3 kilometers (60,000 feet). The amount of turbulence varied with season, increasing by a factor of 3 or more from summer to winter. Given values of gust acceleration were less frequent, on the basis of distance traveled, for supersonic flight of the YF-12A airplane at altitudes above 12.2 kilometers (40,000 feet) than for subsonic flight of a jet passenger airplane at altitudes below 12.2 kilometers (40,000 feet). The median thickness of high altitude turbulence patches was less than 400 meters (1300 feet); the median length was less than 16 kilometers (10 miles). Emmett & Trayvon: Analyzing their Literal & Symbolic Relationship

The recent case of Trayvon Martin has sparked national public outrage and a sensational, overwhelming media response. The killing of the young African-American teenager has also garnered international headlines and created feelings reminiscent of those felt by African-Americans during the Civil Rights era. Many persons in the fields of media have declared the Martin case the modern day version of the 1955 Mississippi lynching of Emmett Till. Not only are these comparisons plentiful, they are widely accepted and have rebirthed the conversation of race relations in America. The following research explores the validity of these assumed connections and the media’s responsibility in the portrayal of both young men through the analysis of newspaper articles, literary sources, and documentaries on the case of Emmett Till and the Civil Rights era. Overall, the cases of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are two cases that are embedded in the racial depths of America. To regress as far back as 1955 not only implies that America has not changed, but Black people themselves would also have to be in the same predicament as they were 60 years ago and this is simply not true. This assumption cannot be made and is in no way valid when the most powerful man in America, is in fact a Black man himself. While Trayvon and Emmett both represent something monumental, the symbolism in each case greatly differs. Trayvon Martin’s case is not the modern day tragedy of Emmett Till, but a confirmation that racial profiling and the days of the late Rodney King may still exist.Ope

A concept for reducing oceanic separation minima through the use of a TCAS-derived CDTI

A concept for using a cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI), as derived from a modified version of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System 2 (TCAS 2), to support reductions in air traffic separation minima for an oceanic track system is presented. The concept, and the TCAS modifications required to support it, are described. The feasibility of the concept is examined from a number of standpoints, including expected benefits, maximum alert rates, and possible transition strategies. Various implementation issues are analyzed. Pilot procedures are suggested for dealing with alert situations. Possible variations of the concept are also examined. Finally, recommendations are presented for other studies and simulation experiments which can be used to further verify the feasibility of the concept

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY

Determinants of merger and acquisition activity in the food industry are analyzed using logit regression analysis. Factors affecting the food processing, food retailing and food service sectors are considered. Results indicate merger and acquisition activity in all three sectors are significantly influenced by antitrust activity, profitability and real gross domestic product.Industrial Organization,
