Language and Content-Subject Teacher Issues across CLIL in the Maritime Studies Field: A Project Experience within the New European Framework

This study presents the main theoretical and practical issues raised in the implementation process of a CLIL Project with undergraduate students at the Faculty of Nautical Sciences of the University of Cádiz (Spain) in the academic year 2009-2010 by a teachers' interdisciplinary innovation research team. The underlying hypotheses of this study are, firstly, that the content greatly determined which communicative competence would be more interesting and beneficial to gain rather than vice versa in a CLIL programme. Secondly, this analysis aims at exploring how certain underlying assumptions in the planning of CLIL methodology cannot be taken for granted. Finally, results also highlight that Content-Language Integrated programmes are a sharing information platform for converging the needs of the language teacher and the content-subject teacher in the European Higher Education Area

English phraseological verb argument contructions (VAC) in the maritime towage operations: Detection and representation of their syntactic and semantic properties.

En este artículo se investigan las construcciones fraseológicas verbales inglesas inscritas en la estructura argumentativa del verbo (VAC) usadas en las expresiones sobre las maniobras de remolque marítimo con la marca semántica [+MOVIMIENTO]. El objetivo de este estudio, basado en un corpus ad hoc especializado, es identificar las construcciones fraseológicas verbales y representar sus rasgos sintácticos y semánticos con el objetivo de sentar las bases para la elaboración de un recurso término-ontológico que pueda contribuir a la mejora de las competencias terminológicas y contextuales de los profesionales de la lengua y del ámbito marítimo. El método de indagación del corpus ha sido semasiológico y onomasiológico a través del establecimiento de unas pautas para la exploración del patrón verbo + argumento y del uso de la clase semántica de verbos push/pullde Levin (1993). El resultado es la aportación de un inventario de fraseología verbal inglesa sobre las operaciones del remolcador marítimo.This article explores the English phraseological verb constructions found within the verb argument construction (VAC) in the expressions used during the maritime towage operations which present the semantic feature [+MOVEMENT]. The purpose of this study, which is based on a specialized ad hoc corpus, is to identify the verb phraseological constructions and represent their syntactic and semantic properties. This will help to lay the foundations for the building of a term-ontological tool that may contribute to the enhancement of the terminological and contextual competences of the language professionals and of maritime language users. The corpus enquiry method has been both semasiological and onomasiological through the establishment of a step-by-step procedure for exploring the verb + argument patterns and the application of the push/pull semantic verb class by Levin (1993). The result of this study is the contribution of an inventory of English verb phraseology for the maritime towage operations.Cet article examine les constructions phraséologiques verbales anglaises inscrites dans la structure argumentative du verbe (VAC) dans les termes utilisés dans les manœuvres de remorquage maritime avec la marque sémantique [+MOUVEMENT]. L’objectif de cette étude, basée sur un corpus ad hoc spécialisé, est les identifier les constructions phraséologiques verbales et représenter leurs traits syntaxiques et sémantiques dans le but de jeter les bases de l´élaboration d´une ressource terme-ontologique pour des professionnels de la langue et le domaine maritime que contribuant à l´amélioration de ses compétences terminologique et contextuelles. La méthode d´enquête du corpus a été hebdomadaire et onomasiologique par l´établissement de lignes directrices pour l´exploration du motif verbe argument et de l´utilisation de la classe sémantique des verbes push/pull de Levin (1993). Le résultat est la fourniture d´un inventaire de phraséologie verbale en anglais sur les opérations du remorquage maritime

La investigación sobre la diversa tipología textual del inglés marítimo concluye en la categorización de dos modalidades troncales con distintos grados de restricción lingüística en función del grado de predictibilidad y de otras variables de carácter eminentemente lingüístico. Herramienta Virtual de Aprendizaje para el Entrenamiento del Lenguaje Normalizado en Inglés para las Comunicaciones Marítimas

El lenguaje utilizado para la comunicación entre buques, buque-estación de tierra o buque-helicóptero es una actividad muy específica que requiere el uso de un compendio de frases normalizadas para las comunicaciones marítimas. En el ámbito académico, el entrenamiento y aprendizaje de este lenguaje queda muy alejado de la experiencia marítima real. Por un lado, difícilmente se puede entrenar por uno mismo y necesitas de otra persona para simular las interacciones que tienen lugar en el contexto marítimo. Por otro lado, al entrenar con otros estudiantes, ni todos tienen el mismo nivel ni llevan el mismo ritmo de aprendizaje. Para abordar estos problemas, en este trabajo se ha desarrollado la herramienta informática SMCP-Training para la formación en Inglés Marítimo. Esta herramienta se ha utilizado en dos asignaturas impartidas en la Escuela de Ingenierías Marina, Náutica y Radioelectrónica de la Universidad de Cádiz. Tanto los resultados recogidos tras su aplicación, como las impresiones de los estudiantes ofrecen evidencias positivas acerca de los beneficios de su uso como recurso primario para el aprendizaje y como refuerzo de lo aprendido.Proyectos de Innovación y Mejora Docente (proyecto sol-201500054563-tra y proyecto sol-201600064916-tra)

The Intercultural Dimension of English for Specific Purposes: Developing Communicative Competence and Strategies in Multilingual Crews

The present paper argues for the need for integrating the multicultural factor in ELT and widening its scope towards ESP university settings. This study focuses on the possibilities of using commmunicative strategies by Maritime english learners as alternative ways of expression in 'talks-in-interaction' in their future profesional context as well as skills that can increase their competence and autonomy when they face up with a set of different cultural expectations regarding multilingual crews. It attempts to show that discourse analysis can be a useful theoretical framework in ESP teaching and research. It is also suggested that task-based activities are suitable ways to tackle the problem and bridge the gap between language learning and cultural studies

Maritime English Documents in Focus: A Discourse-based Approach

The main interest in this research is two-fold: (1) to analyse the shipping law discourse by focusing on the verbal communicative interaction between the author and the reader and by presenting an overall description, functioning and organization of language patterns used in the different discourse-level features of maritime english documents; (2) to explore how discourse analysis is an important tool for both teachers and learners by revealing the kind of strategies and materials which better fits the needs of Maritime English learners

En el umbral de un diseño curricular de inglés marítimo. Su programación

El objetivo de este estudio es presentar el diseño de una nueva programación de un curso de inglés náutico en la Facultad de Ciencias Náuticas de la UCA basándonos en un análisis de necesidades previo con el fin de discernir cuáles son los objetivos y necesidades comunicativas del alumno y, por consiguiente, determinar el enfoque metodológico adecuado. La realización de este estudio ha dado como resultado que el enfoque comunicativo-situacional, en conjunción con el enfoque centrado en el aprendiente (learner-centred approach), son los que se adaptan apropiadamente a los objetivos comunicativos del curso. The aim of this study is to present a new course design and programme on English for nautical students from the Faculty of Nautical Sciences of the University of Cadiz, based on a previous learner’s needs analysis in order to detect his/her actual communicative objectives and needs and consequently determine on the appropriate methodological approach to be used. This study reveals that the communicative-situational approach together with the learner-centred approach are the ones that best suit the course communicative objectives

On the Right Course! Propuesta de Actividades para el laboratorio de idiomas y el ordenador

El presente trabajo se desarrolla en el ámbito de la enseñanza y adquisición del inglés náutico a través de un diseño de materiales orientados al proceso de la adquisición -process-oriented materials (Widdowson, 1981; Candlin and Breen, 1979; Nunan, 1985)-, de acorde con el enfoque comunicativo, y con vistas a ser utilizados en el laboratorio de idiomas y en el aula de informática a través de una sencilla aplicación que también permitiría una proyección para el auto-aprendizaje. Además del marco metodológico comunicativo, el diseño de los materiales ha tenido como fuente de referencia orientativa una encuesta realizada entre el profesorado y alumnado de la Facultad de Ciencias Náuticas, orientada a conocer las preferencias por el tipo de actividad más efectiva. Los materiales, de creación original, se han centrado en las etapas de aprendizaje de activación/producción e interacción, concretándose en tres modalidades de actividades (actividades comunicativas, drills, role-plays). Finalmente, se describen e ilustran cada una de las tareas diseñadas para cada una de las modalidades. The present study deals with process-oriented materials design (Widdowson, 1981; Candlin and Breen, 1979; Nunan, 1985), for an English for Seafaring course based on the communicative methodological approach in order to be used in the language laboratories and in the computer rooms through an easy intuitive software application also intended for self-learning. Besides the communicative approach, the materials design has also been prompted by a survey conducted in the Faculty of Nautical Sciences oriented towards the preferences for the most effective task typology in maritime English acquisition. A full description of the in-house teaching materials and the tasks devised for each of the three main modalities (communicative activities, drills, role-plays) is also provided
