The massive multiple system HD 64315
The O6 Vn star HD 64315 is believed to belong to the star-forming region
known as NGC 2467, but previous distance estimates do not support this
association. We explore the multiple nature of this star with the aim of
determining its distance, and understanding its connection to NGC 2467. A total
of 52 high-resolution spectra have been gathered over a decade. We use their
analysis, in combination with the photometric data from All Sky Automated
Survey and Hipparcos catalogues, to conclude that HD 64315 is composed of at
least two spectroscopic binaries, one of which is an eclipsing binary. HD 64315
contains two binary systems, one of which is an eclipsing binary. The two
binaries are separated by 0.09 arcsec (or 500 AU) if the most likely distance
to the system, around 5 kpc, is considered. The presence of fainter companions
is not excluded by current observations. The non-eclipsing binary (HD 64315
AaAb) has a period of 2.70962901+/-0.00000021 d. Its components are hotter than
those of the eclipsing binary, and dominate the appearance of the system. The
eclipsing binary (HD 64315 BaBb) has a shorter period of 1.0189569+/-0.0000008
d. We derive masses of 14.6+-2.3 M for both components of the BaBb
system. They are almost identical; both stars are overfilling their respective
Roche lobes, and share a common envelope in an overcontact configuration. The
non-eclipsing binary is a detached system composed of two stars with spectral
types around O6 V with minimum masses of 10.8 M and 10.2 M, and
likely masses aprox. 30 M. HD 64315 provides a cautionary tale about
high-mass star isolation and multiplicity. Its total mass is likely above 90
M,but it seems to have formed without an accompanying cluster. It
contains one the most massive overcontact binaries known, a likely merger

An alternative derivation of the gravitomagnetic clock effect
The possibility of detecting the gravitomagnetic clock effect using
artificial Earth satellites provides the incentive to develop a more intuitive
approach to its derivation. We first consider two test electric charges moving
on the same circular orbit but in opposite directions in orthogonal electric
and magnetic fields and show that the particles take different times in
describing a full orbit. The expression for the time difference is completely
analogous to that of the general relativistic gravitomagnetic clock effect in
the weak-field and slow-motion approximation. The latter is obtained by
considering the gravitomagnetic force as a small classical non-central
perturbation of the main central Newtonian monopole force. A general expression
for the clock effect is given for a spherical orbit with an arbitrary
inclination angle. This formula differs from the result of the general

Perspectives in measuring the PPN parameters beta and gamma in the Earth's gravitational fields with the CHAMP/GRACE models
The current bounds on the PPN parameters gamma and beta are of the order of
10^-4-10^-5. Various missions aimed at improving such limits by several orders
of magnitude have more or less recently been proposed like LATOR, ASTROD,
BepiColombo and GAIA. They involve the use of various spacecraft, to be
launched along interplanetary trajectories, for measuring the effects of the
solar gravity on the propagation of electromagnetic waves. In this paper we
investigate what is needed to measure the combination nu=(2+2gamma-beta)/3 of
the post-Newtonian gravitoelectric Einstein perigee precession of a test
particle to an accuracy of about 10^-5 with a pair of drag-free spacecraft in
the Earth's gravitational field. It turns out that the latest gravity models
from the dedicated CHAMP and GRACE missions would allow to reduce the
systematic error of gravitational origin just to this demanding level of
accuracy. In regard to the non-gravitational errors, the spectral noise density
of the drag-free sensors required to reach such level of accuracy would amounts
to 10^-8-10^-9 cm s^-2 Hz^-1/2 over very low frequencies. Although not yet
obtainable with the present technologies, such level of compensation is much
less demanding than those required for, e.g., LISA. As a by-product, an
independent measurement of the post-Newtonian gravitomagnetic Lense-Thirring
effect with a 0.9% accuracy would be possible as well. The forthcoming Earth
gravity models from CHAMP and GRACE will further reduce the systematic

Latino/a Depression and Smoking: An Analysis Through the Lenses of Culture, Gender, and Ethnicity
Rates of major depressive disorder (MDD) and cigarette smoking increase with Latino/a acculturation, but this varies by gender and ethnic subgroup. We investigated how lived experiences (i.e., discrimination, family conflict, family cohesion, familismo) clustered together in the everyday lives of Latina/os. We further examined associations of cluster profile and Latino/a subgroup with MDD and smoking, and tested whether gender moderated these associations. Data came from the National Latino Asian American Study, which included 2,554 Latino/as (48 % female; mean age = 38.02 years). K‐means cluster analysis revealed six profiles of experience, which varied by gender and socio‐cultural characteristics. Proportionately more women than men were in groups with problematic family lives. Acculturated Latino/as were disproportionately represented in profiles reporting frequent discrimination, family conflict, and a lack of shared family values and cohesion. Profiles characterized by high discrimination and family problems also predicted elevated risk for MDD and smoking. Findings suggest that Latino/a acculturation comes jointly with increased discrimination, increased family conflict, and reduced family cohesion and shared family values, exacerbating risk for MDD and smoking. A critical approach to the concept of a polar, low-altitude LARES satellite
According to very recent developments of the LARES mission, which would be
devoted to the measurement of the general relativistic Lense--Thirring effect
in the gravitational field of the Earth with Satellite Laser Ranging, it seems
that the LARES satellite might be finally launched in a polar, low--altitude
orbit by means of a relatively low--cost rocket. The observable would be the

On the possibility of measuring the Earth's gravitomagnetic force in a new laboratory experiment
In this paper we propose, in a preliminary way, a new Earth-based laboratory
experiment aimed to the detection of the gravitomagnetic field of the Earth. It
consists of the measurement of the difference of the circular frequencies of
two rotators moving along identical circular paths, but in opposite directions,
on a horizontal friction-free plane in a vacuum chamber placed at South Pole.
The accuracy of our knowledge of the Earth's rotation from VLBI and the
possibility of measuring the rotators'periods over many revolutions should

Mean Field Model of Coagulation and Annihilation Reactions in a Medium of Quenched Traps: Subdiffusion
We present a mean field model for coagulation () and annihilation
() reactions on lattices of traps with a distribution of depths
reflected in a distribution of mean escape times. The escape time from each
trap is exponentially distributed about the mean for that trap, and the
distribution of mean escape times is a power law. Even in the absence of
reactions, the distribution of particles over sites changes with time as
particles are caught in ever deeper traps, that is, the distribution exhibits
aging. Our main goal is to explore whether the reactions lead to further (time
