    ROOTING CUTTINGS OF Caesalpinia echinata Lam. IN HYDROPONIC SYSTEM

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a necessidade e a concentra\ue7\ue3o apropriada de \ue1cido indolbut\uedrico (AIB) no enraizamento de estacas de Caesalpinia echinata em sistema de hidroponia, para a produ\ue7\ue3o de mudas. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegeta\ue7\ue3o da Faculdade de Ci\ueancias Agr\ue1rias e Veterin\ue1rias da UNESP Jaboticabal, SP. O material vegetal foi constitu\ueddo de 160 estacas caulinares de 11 a 12 cm de comprimento com dois pares de folhas obtidas de mudas jovens produzidas partindo de sementes. As bases das estacas foram tratadas pelo m\ue9todo de imers\ue3o lenta em solu\ue7\ue3o de etanol a 5% durante 14 horas contendo 0, 100, 200 e 400 mg L-1 de AIB e via imers\ue3o r\ue1pida em solu\ue7\ue3o de etanol a 50% durante 5 segundos contendo 0, 1000, 3000 e 5000 mg L-1 de AIB. As estacas permaneceram no sistema de hidroponia por 90 dias e 90 dias adicionais em sacos de polietileno contendo Plantmax\uae como substrato, sendo mantidas sob nebuliza\ue7\ue3o intermitente. Ap\uf3s 90 e 180 dias de enraizamento, foram avaliados a porcentagem de sobreviv\ueancia e de estacas enraizadas, o n\ufamero e o comprimento de ra\uedzes advent\uedcias. As estacas devem ser tratadas com \ue1cido indolbut\uedrico na concentra\ue7\ue3o de 100 mg L-1 por 14 horas e colocadas para enraizar em sistema de hidroponia.This study aimed to determine the indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) requirement and proper concentration for Caesalpinia echinata rooting in a hydroponic system for plantlet production. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse of the \u2018Faculdade de Ci\ueancias Agr\ue1rias e Veterin\ue1rias\u2019, UNESP, in Jaboticabal, S\ue3o Paulo state. The vegetal material consisted of 160 stem cuttings that were 11 to 12 cm in length with two pairs of leaves, prepared from young seedlings. The cutting bases were treated by slow immersion in 5% ethanol solution containing 0, 100, 200 and 400 mg L-1 of IBA during 14 hours and by fast immersion in 50% ethanol solution containing 0, 1000, 3000 and 5000 mg L-1 of IBA during 5 seconds. The cuttings were maintained in the hydroponic system for 90 days and, for additional 90 days in plastic bags containing substrate (Plantmax\uae) under intermittent mist. After 90 and 180 days of rooting, the percentage of cuttings that survived, the rooting percentage and the number and length of adventious root were evaluated. Cuttings should be treated with IBA at 100 mg L-1 for 14 hours and placed to root in a hydroponic system

    Seropositivity for CMV and IL-6 levels are associated with grip strength and muscle size in the elderly

    BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in older adults, with immunosenescence and inflammation being possible underlying mechanisms. We investigated the relationship between latent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels, muscle size and strength in a group of healthy older community-dwelling people. METHODS: Participants were healthy volunteers from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 study. Participants had IL-6 level and CMV antibody titre measured at age 70 years and grip strength and a volumetric T1-weighted MRI brain scan (allowing measurement of neck muscle cross-sectional area (CSA)) at age 73. Markers of childhood deprivation were adjusted for in the analysis due to correlations between childhood deprivation and latent CMV infection. RESULTS: 866 participants were studied; 448 men (mean age 72.48 years, sd 0.70) and 418 women (mean age 72.51 years, sd 0.72). In men, CMV seropositivity was associated with smaller neck muscle CSA (p = 0.03, partial eta squared = 0.01), even after adjustment for IL-6 levels. Neck muscle CSA was not associated with CMV seropositivity in women, or CMV antibody titre or IL-6 level in either sex. Grip strength associated negatively with IL-6 level (right grip strength p<0.00001, partial eta squared 0.032 and left grip strength p<0.00001, partial eta squared 0.027) with or without adjustment for CMV serostatus or antibody titre. CMV status and antibody titre were not significantly associated with grip strength in either hand. CONCLUSION: These findings support the hypothesis that there is a relationship between markers of immunosenescence (i.e. CMV serostatus and IL6 level) and low muscle mass and strength and longitudinal studies in older cohorts are now required to investigate these relationships further

    SARS-CoV-2 introductions and early dynamics of the epidemic in Portugal

    Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal was rapidly implemented by the National Institute of Health in the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, in collaboration with more than 50 laboratories distributed nationwide. Methods By applying recent phylodynamic models that allow integration of individual-based travel history, we reconstructed and characterized the spatio-temporal dynamics of SARSCoV-2 introductions and early dissemination in Portugal. Results We detected at least 277 independent SARS-CoV-2 introductions, mostly from European countries (namely the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland), which were consistent with the countries with the highest connectivity with Portugal. Although most introductions were estimated to have occurred during early March 2020, it is likely that SARS-CoV-2 was silently circulating in Portugal throughout February, before the first cases were confirmed. Conclusions Here we conclude that the earlier implementation of measures could have minimized the number of introductions and subsequent virus expansion in Portugal.     In this article, the authors strengthen the chain of effects that link customer satisfaction to shareholder value by establishing the link between satisfaction and two characteristics of future cash flows that determine the value of the firm to shareholders: growth and stability. Using longitudinal American Customer Satisfaction Index and COM-PUSTAT data and hierarchical Bayesian estimation, the authors find that satisfaction creates shareholder value by increasing future cash flow growth and reducing its variability. They test the stability of findings across several firm and industry characteristics, and they assess the robustness of the results using multimeasure and multimethod estimation. How does customer satisfaction create shareholder value? This is an important question for both top executives and marketing managers.     Exploiting near infrared spectroscopy as an analytical tool for on-line monitoring of acidity during coffee roasting

    This work focused on the monitoring during the roasting process of one of the main characteristics of coffee's organoleptic profile: acidity. Batches of Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties from different origins were roasted following different process conditions. Simultaneously, real-time on-line monitoring of the coffee roasting process was performed with near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) using a diffuse reflectance probe. Spectral data were analysed with chemometric tools and acidity profiles were estimated directly from NIR spectra, revealing an encouraging agreement with values obtained with the reference analytical methodology. NIRS proved to be a reliable non-invasive technique for real-time monitoring of coffee roasting processes and may be used as an end-roasting signalizing tool. Furthermore, the approach presented also revealed good perspectives for the exploration of NIRS in the monitoring of other relevant compounds during coffee roasting

Persistem, todavia, alguns constrangimentos para estes profissionais de saúde, no acesso à profissão e na consequente atribuição de responsabilidades técnicas e científicas. Cabe à OBIO a defesa, regulação e certificação dos seus profissionais, bem como garantir códigos de conduta e formação contínua determinantes para a elevada qualidade que se espera destes. De igual modo, o CBHS assume as competências estatutárias na definição dos seus objetivos de forma a garantir o bom exercício da atividade profissional dos seus membros, e o reconhecimento destes pela Sociedade e Instituições.N/
